She Says: For our First Trick
For our first trick, Mark and I will partake in an experiment entitled “The Meatless Month.” For thirty days we will abstain from eating meat and fish. Eggs and dairy are allowed for now. It was Mark’s idea, but I think it will be less of a challenge for me than for him because I hardly ever eat meat and never eat fish.
As a girl who loves her yoga, I am aware that when I eat meat that means another being was killed so that I could be fed. That disturbing reality usually prompts me to avoid meat. ”But Heather,” you ask, “What about those cute boots you wear with skirts in the winter?” Yes, I am aware of my hipocracy. I am, however, not perfect and am just trying to take small steps that are reasonable for me at this time. Otherwise, I will get obsessive and that is not good for anyone involved. Also, to be completely honest, I am not so disturbed that I do not occasionally eat my mom’s homemade meatballs or regularly consume the non-homemade ice cream. Like I said, I am not perfect. Besides, I do not even know what perfect means. Anyway, we’ll let you know how it goes along the way.
Day 1 starts MONDAY, and we’ll be going food shopping tomorrow, so if you have any good meatless meal ideas for Mark and I to try, please, let us know!

Hi Heather!!
Great blog you’ve started here; and such a fun challenge that you and your boyfriend are taking part in, with going meatless – good luck!! :0)
Here’s a GREAT resource for meatless meals (it’s a 2 week menu plan) – please check it out, along with the rest of the website!!:

Veggie Girl,
Thanks, I will check out the link. I’ve eaten tofu and tempeh, but never cooked it because I’ve been intimidated, so hopefully, this information will help.
Heather
They do sell pre-cooked/baked tofu and tempeh (Wildwood, SoyBoy, and Lightlife are well-known brands).
Hi! Best wishes with your upcoming challenge!
Scott (my husband) is complicated. He calls himself a vegetarian but he doesn’t eat eggs or drink milk, etc. He eats vegan 99% of the time but about 4 times a year will have a slice of pizza (usually when we are traveling and there aren’t many choices…). Although, he hasn’t done that in a while and once its been a year, he says he’ll feel more comfortable calling himself a vegan.
I hope that helps.
Good luck!! I hope your meatless month goes well! I don’t eat meat, and very rarely have eggs. I eat occasional cheese. I’m looking forward to see what you guys are eating. I think you’ll notice you get more creative in the kitchen. I did.
PS – I linked to you from my blog. Hope you don’t mind!
There is a really good bake tofu recipe on the Gliding Calm blog! I’ve been obsessed with it this week, and I’m a total carnivore!
Hi Erin,
Thanks for stopping by. I’ll have to check out that tofu recipe.
Heather
Your Meatless Month was a fantastic read! Thank you for doing this and for documenting it. Your POV is a breath of fresh air, especially to someone who has been limiting their meat intake but confused about how/if to move forward.

Talk about a well written first post. No wonder I enjoy your blog so much. It started strong and just keeps getting better!
I also like to look back at people’s first post to see the progression in their writing, content, and to get to know them.
Just realized I never commented here but I’m with you on the meat. My compromise is that the vast majority (again- no perfection here either) of the meat I cook at home is sustainably raised and local. I’ve broken that pledge for ground turkey from time to time but am vigilant about it with pork products in particular. They are smarter than the dogs I love so much and I can’t imagine some of the cruelty in that industry.
