He Says: Late Night Breakfast Sandwich

Posted by Mark on Aug 31 2008 | Breakfast

Heather is in New Jersey. Last night we took a 3 hour walk. Somewhere a long the line I realized I was hungry. We stopped at Dunkin Donuts on Broad St. where I experimented with their new Egg White Flatbread Sandwich (Veggie). It comes in Turkey variety too but I’ve been enjoying meatless meals well after meatless month, so why stop now?

The outside is unexpectedly crispy and tasty while the cheese and egg-white are eerily fluffy but totally enjoyable. I think they use a convection oven so the thing comes out piping hot in under 2 minutes.

Dunkin’ is going to give Starbucks a run for its overpriced money when it comes to my breakfast choices.

Heather bets the bread has high fructose corn syrup in it.

They Say: Please Don’t Stop the Music!

Posted by Mark on Aug 30 2008 | Dinner, Sweet Treats

We made it to the wedding! Everything was just like the bride and groom; beautiful and sophisticated. We had a lot of fun chatting with some college friends and boogying down to a really great band.

The food. There was so much food. For the cocktail hour there were various stations (pasta, carving station, sushi, shell fish, etc.) inside and outside.

Dinner and dessert brought even more great food.

 Mark's Sea Bass: Mediocre

Heather's Vegetarian Plate (Upon Request!!): Yummy Cous Cous

She Says: So glad I asked for a meatless alternative!

Once again, there was more food than imaginable for dessert.  Along with the wedding cake there was assorted cakes and pies, hot apple strudel, cheese cake (where you got to add your own fruit, chocolate or caramel topping), fresh fruit, mousses and proftiterole.

She Says: V. Fast

Posted by Heather on Aug 29 2008 | On the Go

So I am on the road to Long Island for the wedding tonight. The teacher found out about my driving situation and made me leave early - super! Here are my road snacks. I am surely going to eat that whole bar because I was running around during lunch and never ate. When do teachers eat? The tea is so good by the way.

Hope everyone has a great Friday!

She Says: My Favorite Food Is Oatmeal

Posted by Heather on Aug 28 2008 | Dinner

Today at school the teacher asked each student to say his/her name and favorite food. When it came to me I said “Oatmeal.” I got some strange looks from the 2nd graders, but hey, at least they’ll remember me. I was thinking about it and I think it’s true. Well, maybe “oats” in general, rather than specifically oatmeal. There is just so much you can do with them.

After school and before work I had a Wallaby Organic Nonfat Vanilla Bean Yogurt.

It was flavorful, but I like Stonyfield Farms better. Texture wise, it was very thin. The complete opposite of Greek yogurt.  I think it would be good with cereal because it was almost a liquid.

See the vanilla beans.

See the vanilla beans.

For dinner I baked tofu (tossed in olive oil and smoked paprika) and then I added it to a black beans, squash, tomato mix I made. Another tofu success!

So, tomorrow will be crazy. I have to go to a wedding about 4 hours away on Long Island.  It starts at 6:30 and I will be able to leave school at 3:00 (best case). Two things are clear (1) I am missing the ceremony; and (2) I will obviously be looking lovely at the wedding after I get dressed in the car.  Not only is it Friday afternoon on 95 South, but it’s a holiday weekend. I am looking forward to seeing college friends, so it’s all good. Yikes! Mark will be meeting there, so we’ll be sure to snap all the wedding eats.

I have to pack for the weekend and read my blogs so later gators!

She Says: First Day, Last Day

Posted by Heather on Aug 28 2008 | Breakfast

Well, it’s here. My first day of student teaching. It’s only a half day, but I can’t wait to meet the students. :D

I also have a last after my first: my last day at the pre-school where I’ve been working part time while taking classes.  Also known as, Heather enters a new level of cheap and is very nice to her mom who buys her things she should not be buying her at this age. Is anyone out there a teacher? What are your thoughts on working part time (nights/weekends) while student teaching.

Alright, for my big day I had something brand new to me, an Ezekiel English muffin with Almond Butter. I ground it myself at WF and it’s off the hoooook.  I put a mashed up date and some flax on top of 1/2 and went pure AB and muffin with the other half.

Oh, and some last minute food psychology.  This article discusses two marketing studies indicating that some people eat more junk food when it comes in a small package instead of a regular package. Apparently, people view small portions as “diet food” and do not fear overeating it like they would if it was in a regular package. I will admit I was a big consumer of the 100 cal pack a few years back.  Then I got wise to their tricky ways! Still, though, I will eat a fun size bag of m&ms or something I would ordinarily view as “junk food” because it’s pre-portioned and I know I can’t stick my hand back in the bag after it’s gone.  Is food psychology a real subject? It should be.

She Says: Mark is Allergic to Milk! Say Wuh?

Posted by Heather on Aug 27 2008 | Dinner, Intense Lifestyle

I don’t know if you read his last post, but I am worried. I love all things milk (yogurt, ice cream, pudding, oh and milk). What if he wants to go Dairy Free for 30 days? Someone tell him it’s in his head or give him other things to try first. Gulp.

Anyway, first let me tell you that I had my first date this morning and holy moly was it good! Dare I say, better than my other love, prunes. I ate it straight, but I think it would go really well chopped up in some plain yogurt or mushed on peanut butter and bread. Oh the possibilities.

I also had that Cliff nectar lemon, vanilla & cashew bar. Here is my official review. Some details are random, but I have so many to try and I really want to remember them. :)

Wish I took a better picture.

Wish I took a better picture.

Stats: 160 cals (50 from fat), 6 g fat, 0 Cholesterol, 5 mg Sodium, 310 Potassium, 6 g fiber, 17 g sugar, 4 g protein.

Ingredients: Organic Dates, Organic Cashews, Organic Goji Berries, Organic Lemon Juice Concentrate, Organic Vanilla

Price: $1.29 at Whole Foods

Extras: 2 Servings of Fruit, organic, it says “Low Glycemic” on it (not sure who gets to decide that)

Taste: First impression, “Ahhh that is sweet.”  After that,  I got into it more. I didn’t taste vanilla or lemon, but it does taste “fruity.” It was good, but probably too sweet for me.

Texture: Smooshed fruit with nuts (i.e. larabar).

Highlights: Good chunks of yummy cashews and goji berries (I am sorry the picture doesn’t show this because it was pretty impressive). Good ingredient list.

Hunger Factor: I was hungry again in two hours and pretty much ate carb based snacks all afternoon (goldfish are so sneaky). To be fair, it might not have been the bar’s fault entirely. I had a sweet date and other fruit today so I had a lot of sugar unintentionally.

Overall: I liked it for a sweet snack. More for a dessert than an everyday snack though.

Run Then Eat

After work, I went for my run and then ate dinner. Oh wait, before that I had these Back to Nature crackers because, ya know, the goldfish weren’t enough. These are just begging for peanut butter.

Alright, then I had dinner. Boring.

Salad with leftover pesto pasta.

The Bean Patties did not hold up well, shape wise, in the freezer. I ended up crumbling it up and it was v. tasty.

Running Stride Follow-Up

So yesterday I asked whether I need to hit the ground with my whole foot at once and got some good advice from fabulous commenters.  Interestingly, I found this piece today summarizing a N.Y. Times article evaluating the pros and cons of various running styles and indicating that there might not be one correct way to run. Good news for us perfectionists!
