She Said: Some Things I Ate This Weekend

Hello bloggers and anonymous readers! I thought I would share some of the things I ate this weekend that were not from the cookie food group.

Saturday night, I used a Laughing Cow French Onion Triangle to make Cheesy Rice. I like Laughing Cow cheese even though I am sure pure cheese lovers would find it reprehensible.

Sunday night, I tried the Rising Moon Organics Butternut Squash Ravioli that have been hanging out in my freezer.

These were just ok. They don’t have the traditional warm flavor of many squash dishes. Instead, they are kind of peppery. I think they need a good cheesy sauce. I was impressed by the quality for frozen food. Anyone tried any of their other foods?

After seeing Emergen C Vitamin C drink packets on Gina’s blog, I decided to give them a try for myself. I got my extra C in the form of Pink Lemonade. It kinda sells funny, but tastes ok.

I’ve been thinking of getting a heart rate monitor. My hesitation is thinking that I might become to into seeing how many calories I burned (reverse calorie counting???) and what my heart rate is. Do you have one? If so, how do you avoid becoming obsessed with the numbers?

that ravioli looks yummy ! I am on a butternut squash kick going to have to try it:)

  2. rhodeygirl Says:

the ONLY reason I haven’t gotten one yet is that I am afraid I will start exercising just to burn calories and not for the fun of it.. especially as I count my food calories right now (trying to lose a few lbs and that’s the only easy way for me- planning on stopping in the next few months though).

Anyway, I think that maybe if you (or I) become interested in the calories burned then just look at it at the very end of your workout, instead of checking out ur stats as you go along? That way it will just be one of the stats and not a motivator or de-motivator as u r working out.

  3. Ava Says:

I have a Polar F6 HRM and it is by far the best investment I’ve made for my health. To prevent myself from getting obsessive with counting calories, I only wear it when I work out. I set a goal for myself before I workout.. like yesterday was a minimum of 300 calories and I wasn’t allowed to leave the gym till I hit my minimum goal. I really love it and it helps to make sure I get a good worthwhile workout!

  4. Biz Says:

I think its funny that you have a beer in front of your Emergency C!

I gave up worrying about burned calories a month ago. When I exercised, calorieking.com would “tell” me to eat more, but I stayed the same weight.

I decided to stick to around 1400 calories a day, no matter what exercise did, and I am down 6 pounds since September 5!

So that’s what I am sticking with. Plus, I probably could never figure out how to work it!

  5. Divya Says:

I do have a heart rate monitor, and I obsess so much that I don’t use it anymore. He he he.
It is a good thing to have, but consistent long workouts work for me. None of the other parameters matter.

  6. Nicole Says:

I have a heart rate monitor! I just got it, actually. I’ve only used it twice, but I think it was a good investment. I don’t look at how many calories I burned until after my workout, to prevent getting obsessed with the numbers.

  7. Christie Says:

I have a Sunnuto Watch but i use it more for pace and distance than for heart rate, I dont really follow HR and calories when I run

  8. Heather Says:

Thanks for the HRM suggestions. I think I might want to get one if I start running outside more – for pacing purposes.

Biz: It’s the Pink Lemonade Vitamin C drink in the beer glass. What kind of weirdo do you think I am? :D

  9. Jenny Says:

I love my heart rate monitor, but it doesn’t do calories, only heart rate. I do have a feeling that if it showed calories I would quickly become obsessed. Something that helps me not become obsessive about the heart rate number is that I try to focus more on it not getting too high or too low, I focus on staying in a healthy, good cardiovascular range. It’s very convenient though, so I would definitely recommend investing, as long as you are aware, become too obsessed shouldn’t be a problem.

  10. Kristie Says:

Laughing Cow repulsive? NEVER. That stuff is amazing.

I’ve been considering getting a heart rate monitor recently. I guess there is that possibility of getting obsessive with it, but I’ve never been overly concerned with how many calories I burn during my workouts. I always just workout to feel fit and energized and I think I would be able to continue that even with the monitor. Mainly I would just like to get a general idea of how many calories I burn during certain workouts, and see the variation in calories on days when a typical workout feels harder than the standard. I also want it so it can help me to push myself a little further than the standard as well as I can see it being motivating to get the heart rate up. We shall see though!

  11. Christie I. Says:

I like the rising moon pasta, I have never had that flavor though. I had the roasted veg which was good and have the goat cheese/basil one in the fridge.

I have a polar f6 HRM watch. I no longer wear it because it made me very obsessed.

  12. MizFit Says:

    noncheesePURIST in the house.

I love to do that with the garlic & herb ;)

  13. Erin Says:

I used to have a HRM, but I personally couldn’t handle it for the obsessional quality. I use the talk test now. If I can barely talk or breath, I feel like I’m working hard enough. :)
    It was Nike though.

  14. Julz Says:

It’s pointless for me to have one because I’m not running anymore or anything like that (Since shattering the s*** out of my right food :) Smoothe operatuh!). Anyways, it just seems like it’s so ridic (UNLESS YOU’RE A RUNNER or have heart palpitations or something of the sort) FOR ME… As a type A and some1 who likes to do the same things in my schedule, I know I’d become obsessive about it. Hence why I don’t like doing machines and such. Anyways, they scare me, lol.

  15. shawna Says:

I think I read on kath’s blog that going one mile is approx. 80-100 calories burned, no matter how fast you go (walk or run). It made sense to me (and it was slightly confirmed by my Nike+ – I say slightly because I’m not sure how accurate it is, but it was close to Kath’s calculation). So, being a make-believe-runner, I just use that now. Heart-rate wise, I don’t think I’ll ever over-exert myself while running, so my BPM doesn’t really matter so much. Does that even help you at all? Probably not. I’ll just shut-up now.

  16. runjess Says:

I do not use a heart rate monitor because I’m afraid of the numbers obsession.

I do love adding Laughing Cow cheese to rice dishes. Makes it taste more like risotto :)

  17. Victoria Says:

I really like the Rising Moon brand. I’ve had their garlic and veggie ravioli, and their spinach florentine ravioli, and their tomato basial sauce is my favorite jarred sauce.

  18. Andrea (Off Her Cork) Says:

Oh I <3 my HRM like a dweeby little geek should. :D I don’t check my cals burned during my exercise, I only look at my HR to see if I need to bump it up some more. It’s been really helpful to me in seeing how many calories I burn depending on what I’m doing, how high my HR is, and how long I work out. I adore it and it is a very spiffy green color which makes it teh awesome. Plus at the end of the week it gives you a total of all calories burned and how long you worked out. Mine is also the Polar F6 although I am also thinking about adding the Nike+ipod thingie into the mix because that calculates a whole diff. set of things that I would love to track. And also because I am a gadget nut. :D

  19. rachel Says:

I have one… I don’t use it as much as I thought I would. I wore it to sleep last night and when I woke up, I had burned 500 calories!

It was good because I wore it on my usual running loop a few times, and now I know how many calories I burn when I do that since I’m not at a gym.

  20. ttfn300 Says:

yeah i don’t have a hrm… i’ve always trained by perceived exertion, I know when I am running as fast as I can, or if I’m not working hard enough ;-) lately i’m considering, but do’t want to fall into the numbers trap

  21. VeggieGirl Says:

Great eats!!! Especially the squash ravioli – yum!!

  22. runeatrepeat Says:

Laughing Cow cheese on rice sounds like a good idea. I may try it on pasta to make a mac’n cheese.

  23. Allyson Says:

I have a Polar f4 HRM. I love it. Even though I do watch my calories while working out, I find it helps me stay on track and know if I’m working hard enough or not. Good luck!

  24. Laura Says:

I also have a Polar f4 and I love it! I don’t really obsess over the numbers. It’s been very useful to me because I know which activities really get my HR up and burn the most calories.

  25. sarah (of ghost world) Says:

one way to avoid obsessing over the calories is to acknowledge to yourself that there is NO WAY it is fully accurate, but just an estimate.

i sort of refuse to believe a gadget can tell how much i’m ‘burning’. and i’ve always thought things were more complicated than ‘# in / # out’. but anyway.

i have a polar RS200sd (measures HR, speed, distance), and it is a fun little toy. i care more about the speed/distance part but could imagine tracking heart rate to see how fitness improves over the course of a round of training for a race.

  26. gina (fitnessista) Says:

hey thank you for the shout out! they don’t taste the best but they work!
i LOVE my pink polar f4 heart rate monitor! can’t wait to hear what you pick out!

  27. Tina Says:

Those ravioli are so yummy! I should buy them again!
