She Said: To run or not to run?
Things are really picking up with student teaching, so I guess it’s good that I am about 90% back to my old self. It’s interesting because even thought I feel much better, I sound a lot worse! I decided to get my legs moving today and went for a scaled back version of my run. I looked online a bit for guidance about whether to run when sick. I found this quick blog entry at Women’s Health, which gave me the green light (I am more stuffed than a Thanksgiving Tofurkey right now). For me, it was a good idea to get back into into it, but not push myself too much because when I’m sick my asthma really flares up.
Oh, I attribute my quick recovery to my daily medicine: oranges and tea.
Please note my Stevia. I am trying to quit Splenda and my mom is trying to quit Equal (so 80s), so we have Sweet Leaf (stevia) and Sun Crystals. I like both. I don’t think she likes either.
You see, I hate taking medicine. I’ve heard that not finishing antibiotics is one of the worst things people can do because the strongest bacteria survive and are left to reproduce with eachother (click here for a much more accurate explanation). I made the completely illogical jump to over the counter medicine and try to stay away from it for fear that every time I take it I am only encouraging the strongest germs to prosper. I’ve also heard the same thing about antibacterial soap, and it hasn’t stopped me from using that, but I’m odd.
Clear that Stuffiness Chili
Nothing like spicy bean chili to clear up a stuffy nose! Wooooh. I also had some sweet potato fries, salad, and wheat & flax bread.

That chili looks great!
And the article on exercising was interesting. I had heard the “above the neck” thing before, but had never seen it in writing.
Feel better!

I’m glad to know it’s ok to run when sick, becuase I may have done that once or twice in the past.
Where did you find the stevia packets from? Does it taste like sugar at all?

I’ve been using stevia for a while now and really like it! I only use like 1/3 of the packet at a time though or it can be a little overpowering.
I’m the same way about meds, so I don’t think you are weird at all.
I think your body has a way of taking care of itself, unless of course you are really sick and need prescription meds or something.

Heather, I feel you. I’m trying to switch to Stevia but I keep finding myself creeping back into my splenda stash.
You kill me!
I’m so glad you’re feeling better. Interesting views on healing. I think oranges and tea are better than antibiotics myself.
Love the Thanksgiving Tofurkey reference.
Hi mom!

will you then quit sweeteners all together or are you just swapping?
when i visited Argentina + Ecuador (in trips over the past couple of years) I noticed that the McCafes were really popular, as in, a COOL hangout. And the capps were amazing. I wonder if they will eventually re-image themselves as the same here in the US. thanks for the hint on the freebie.

I need to try stevia. I’ve been hearing so much about it! Right now I am just going for real sugar (sugar in the raw). Glad you’re feeling better! Finish those meds!

I think it is safe to run/workout when your “sick” from the neck up… and I ordered one of those kashi cookes too I have always wanted to try them but never wanted to commit to a whole box haha

Hope you feel better soon! I totally believe in the power of oranges (vitamin C) when it comes to curing illness. I’m all about some free Kashi

i understand about bodies/medication – i’m not a fan of medicine either. i hope you fully recover very soon. i’ve also never tried stevia, though of course heard of it lots – i wonder if it’s even sold in the UK??

Erin: That gave me a giggle, too.
Rhodey: That would be interesting, but I bet it’s a long way off.
Christie: That’s exactly what I heard about running!

I need to try cutting back on the Splenda a bit too. I haven’t tried Stevia yet, although I’m interested in doing so. Does it have a specific/noticeable taste at all or is it just kind of standard sweet?
Good to hear you’re feeling better. I have a terrible cough right now. It sucks. I think I’ll give your orange and tea medication a try. Except I have no oranges. Crap.

I don’t use artificial sweeteners at all and I heard that stevia can cause men to be sterile. I’m not sure which industry did that research though. What happen to the good ole days when we just are regular sugar and didn’t have so much to think about?
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:48 am
Woah, Christie. I am going to have to do some research about these products! I know, I used to use sugar. Maybe I should just go back.

How’s the stevia use going? I’m curious about it but since it’s currently labeled as a supplement and not a food it’s not subject to the same rigors of research as a “food” and I’m wishing there were more testing so I could have a sense of long term effectives. People who use it seem to like it quite a lot though, although I have heard some complaints of a slight anise flavor. Have you noticed this?

When one of us is sick and stuffy, I also make spicy food or make us get take-out Mexican. I fully live under the “spicy will kick out sickness!” rule of life. I have no idea if this is in anyway an actual remedy but it works for us (or so I tell myself!). :p Also, we drink lots of peppermint tea to help curb the cold.
For tea, it’s honey all the way for sweetness. For coffee, I use liquid french vanilla creamer. I only have one cup a day so I allow myself that little luxury.
Love the kashi cookies! In fact I just talked about them today.

I can’t believe that Women’s Health blog entry didn’t mention this, but my ex-coach’s rule was no running if you have a fever. This is dangerous for obvious reasons: exercise raises temperature and so does fever, so the combination means a dangerously high body temperature.
Hope you’re feeling better. Thanks for the cookie link!
