She Says: The Good Thing About “Food Blogs”

Since Mark and I started Hangry Pants I’ve been paying more attention to other healthy lifestyle/food/exercise/nutrition blogs and want to formally state one of the many positive thing about this blog community: learning about “new” products. For example, I’ve seen Z-bars in the market for a couple of years now, but always disregarded them as a kid snack that was probably too sweet and not very nutritious. These bars are all over the food blog scene and I figured I should give them a try. So far I’ve had the honey graham and blueberry, and today I tried the chocolate chip.

My preference is to not eat bars, but after school and before a run, I need a little something. Z-bars are perfect for this: not too big, not too small, perfect texture and about as sweet as could be expected from something with chocolate chips in it. So happy about these.

On another note, Gwyneth Paltrow is cool.

While running today, I watched Gwyneth Paltrow on Oprah. I’ve been friends in my head with Gwyneth ever since she wore that pretty pink dress to the Oscars. Well, now I have three more reasons for loving her:

(1) She’s a Foodie: She eats everything except “animals with four legs.”

(2) She Keeps it Real: She admitted to working out 2 hours a day/ 6 days a week. One thing that annoys me is Hollywood Starlets who claim to be “naturally thin” and eat whatever they want. I understand that certain people, of course, are naturally thin, but it must be a statistical improbability for all of those people to be famous actresses and singers. I think that kind of dishonesty sets up regular people to feel like something is wrong with them. At least Ms. Paltrow admits to having to work to look the way she wants to.

(3) She is friends with Mario Batali: What cool guy. He wears orange crocs (and did so before they were cool) and, like me, is a read headed pale skinned Italian. Mario and Gwyneth went on a food adventure: a dining road trip through Spain for the television show, Spain … on the Road Again. So cool!

You should definitely try the chocolate brownie flavor – it’s my favorite. And if you heat it up in the microwave… heaven.

  2. Danielle Says:

Gwyneth is awesome! It’s so nice and refreshing when celebrities reveal how their bodies are just as normal as ours. I didn’t get a chance to watch it but I saw clips from her workout routine on Oprah.com… intense :)

P.S. I’ve been dyinggggg to try Z-Bars! One day!

  3. Christie Says:

Yes i agree with magpie heat it or add it to greek yogurt!

Did gwyneth say why she does that much exercise like maybe when she is gettign ready to film or something cause that is alot… i do love her tho.. i wish i had some height like her!

  4. ttfn300 Says:

ah! I saw a clip of her and mario, so fun :) and so glad she fesses up!

  5. VeggieGirl Says:

I too love learning about new products from food blogs; and I’m VERY glad that you and Mark started Hangry Pants, since you guys are awesome!! :-)

Gwyneth is great; but I LOOOOVE Mario Batali!!! He seems like such a fun guy, and I love his cooking show.

  6. Erica Says:

I agree! It is so annoying to hear stars saying they don’t work out!! They totally do! Good for Gwyneth for being so upfront! She is gorgeous and seems so nice!

  7. gina (fitnessista) Says:

    i love z bars!! they’re such a great snack
thanks for all of the gwen facts– she really is super cool and i love when celebrities admit to working out hard and eating well to have the bodies that they have. diane lane was on regis and kelly one day and she was like “i’m 50 now, i guess i should start working out”… you KNOW she works out! ughh
hope you have a great night!

  8. Rose Says:

Z- bars are pretty good! I rediscovered them on food blogs too. It’s amazing what’s hiding in the shelves…

  9. Rachel Says:

I love that you and Gwyneth are “friends in your head.” :)

    ______________
I have a few. :D Kelly Taylor and Julia Roberts are two of my
    best friends in my head.

  10. Heather Says:

    Magpie: Great Idea!

    Danielle: V. intense.

Christie: She said she has to in order to be able to eat all the food she wants. I guess after she had her son she had a hard time dropping the last 20 lbs. and realized her metabolism was not what it used to be. It seems like a lot I guess, but no, it is not for a specific role.

VeggieGirl: Thanks. You’re so sweet to us. Sweeter than agave nectar. :D

Erica and Gina: Exactly! I think Fergie and Gwen Stefani are also good at admitting that they have to work at those bods.

Rose: Good things on those shelves and in those produce aisles.

  11. Erin Says:

I love it when the celebs keep it real.
You and Mark bring joy to my life!

  12. Melissa S. Says:

i like the brownie one the best…and have yet to find the blueberry or apple one near me….

and i loved GP in that pink dress…and that she doesn’t eat anything w/ fur and on four legs…she rocks.

  13. eatingbender Says:

You have no idea how happy I am that you like the ZBaRs! Food blogging has seriously introduced me to so many new things. I worked in the nutrition section at a grocery store last summer and I always stocked those ZBaRs and thought they were kid stuff, like you did. Little did I know that thanks to food blogs they’d soon take over my diet! Not quite…but close!

And I love Gwyneth Paltrow! I saw a clip from the Oprah interview – I agree with your three points about her, they’re very true.

  14. Heather Says:

Erin: That is so nice. We love Care to Eat and I do me “we.” Mark definitely “knows” Andrea and Erin. :D

Melissa: I got the blueberry in N.J. – haven’t seen it in R.I. I also haven’t seen the peanut butter or apple. Boo.

    Eatingbender: Yay food blogs!

  15. Megan Says:

Clif z-bars have saved me in those “crunch” times! I love the honey graham flavor. The only one I really don’t like is the apple cinnamon!

  16. MizFit Says:

You and Gwynnie & me and Sandy (Bullock. Deemed her my new BFF as soon as I moved to Austin. She appears not to have noticed….YET).

We’ll do dinner and a movie.

  17. Heather Says:

MizFit: Sounds like a plan. I love Sandy, too.

  18. Christie I. Says:

Is that the inner workings of a prius in that shot? I drive one too, do you just love it?

Oh, yeah, and food blogs do rock.

  19. Meghann Says:

I know what you mean about discovering things through the food blogs, that’s what keeps me coming back, to see what things I would never have thought of before would be good.

There was a great article in this month’s Glamour on GP and Mario. I used to think she was a really stuck up person, but in the article she came off as very real. I definitely admire her so much more now.

  20. shawna Says:

I love all the new discoveries I’ve made through the food blogs. It keeps everything so interesting!

  21. Mark Says:

    I don’t know this Mario.

There’s a need for only 2 Mario’s in the world, in no particular order:

    1. Super Mario
    2. Mario Lopez

  22. Heather Says:

Christie: Yes, I heart my prius.

Mark: You are funny (to me). I know you usually just pay attention to Giada and Alton, but Mario is also on the FN. He has a little red ponytail and is one of the iron chefs (from iron checf america).

  23. Andrea (Off Her Cork) Says:

That is exactly one of the main reasons I love the food blogging community. I get exposed to different things and learn how to make them. Some things I would have never heard of or even realized I could make, but thanks to food blogs I’ve seen them in action. :D

I just tried a Z bar this week too! I had the chocolate brownie one, very chocolatey. mmmm!

  24. Biz Says:

Your blog and other food blogs are proof to my husband that I am not the only one who thinks, imagines, talks, watches FoodTV, cooks from scratch on a regular basis!

Since I started my blog, I haven’t had fast food once and I’ve lost 6 pounds in three weeks. It makes you get a little more creative too with what you would normally eat!

    I’ll be back to visit!

  25. Erin Says:

HUGE Gwynnie fan here, too!! :)
