She Says: Lack of Pumpkin Motivation
This week’s Blogger Secret Ingredient is pumpkin as chosen by Lindsay at Love of Oats. Now, I love pumpkin, but I had no pumpkin motivation this week. Instead, tonight, I reheated some leftover frozen Pumpkin Polenta with Chickpeas and Garbanzo Beans with added tofu. Also, I thought about my Peanut Butter Pumpkin Blondies. I am not sure if these count as BSI submsissions, but hey, it’s worth a try!
Because there were no Blondies left, I ate some Carrot Cake Cookies instead.
Here’s something to ponder. Last night, I saw Paula Deen make “Turducken,” which as you might imagine is a combination of turkey, duck and chicken. Well, I will reserve outright judgement and simply ask, what is the strangest food make an appearance at a holiday meal?

hahah Paula Dean is crazy. I love watching her cook but have never made any of her recipes (I don’t think I have anyways). I’m not really a weird eater. I play it safe

turdurken is so weird. paula deen cracks me up– kelly ripa was her as one of her costumes on regis and kelly for halloween and she made butter kabobs. hilarious
i think the weirdest food my family eats is menudo — a soup with hominy and cow intestines (called “tripas”) and cow tongue. thank goodness i stopped eating beef when i was 5. when i was little, i’d stick my tongue out and my nana would tell me she’d cut it off and make burritos with it (since they ate cow tongue burritos sometimes). DISGUSTING!
hope you have a great night!

Love your pumpkin polenta dinner!

Ha, I saw someone make that on the Food Network! It’s so crazy.

interesting combo; polenta and pumpkin!
i can’t think of a weird combo….but i’m sure something tasted weird instead…haha!

This isn’t really “weird,” but our family does make it a point to include at least one jello “salad” (like one is orange jello, tapioca pudding, cool whip and mandarin oranges – YUM!) at each family gathering. Yes, we call it salad…don’t know why? But MAN it is good.

Turducken… honestly, the most disturbing food ever. I actually feel bad for the animals (and I NEVER feel bad for the dead animals on my plate).
November 21st, 2008 at 12:59 am
I wish I had random pumpkin things to pull out of my freezer, yours look good to me!
hahaha I do love Paula Deen, she is so endearing…I’d have to think long and hard about the strangest thing I’ve seen at a holiday meal…my family is pretty traditional so that’s a toughie.

when I lived in the south, they had CHEESE dip, I thought that was strange:)
November 21st, 2008 at 4:32 am
i love pumpkin i think it is the best ingredient, and so healthy. full of so much nutrients and vitamins…
November 21st, 2008 at 5:04 am
pumpkin polenta and pumpkin Blondies yum yum yum…
November 21st, 2008 at 7:00 am
pumpkin polenta must be delicious~~~~~~
for me the strangest appearance for the holiday dish is Turkey actually. An entire turkey!!!!!! it’s really hard for me to eat the animal when it’s in its original form.

I went to a thanksgiving in Pa a few years ago where they had a turducken—it was pretty cool! (but Im a huge carnivore)
I LOVE the food bloggers secret ingredient thing—-we fitness peeps need something fun like that!

Strangest food at our thanksgiving?? That would have to be the year that my mom said “Forget the turkey, we’re having salmon!”
I love Thanksgiving food, so this was beyond weird.
November 21st, 2008 at 8:45 am
turdurken is super challenging to make, so i hear!!! LOL. i think tofurky (tofu shaped into turkeys) are pretty weird.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:06 am
Paula Deen, oh man, haha!!
November 21st, 2008 at 9:19 am
I’ve never had strange food at a holiday, but tordurkens do sound gross and weird!
November 21st, 2008 at 9:25 am
My husband’s family serves this stuff called, pineapple stuffing. Pineapple. Stuffing. So weird. I dunno if it’s an Eastern PA thing or just a weird family thing of theirs but I wouldn’t touch the stuff.

Paula Dean grosses me out – one time I watched her put a stick of butter in a bloody mary as garnish. Haven’t been able to watch since!
Pumpkin polenta with chickpeas combines three of my favorite ingredients! Great submission

I’m from Connecticut so to me this is normal, but to others it might sound icky… I make my apple pie with grated aged cheddar baked on top of the crust sometimes – so good!
Ok maybe strangest though was when my mom made Frog’s legs as an appetizer for our easter dinner. It tasted ok, but I was little so once I found out what it was I freaked out and ran out of the dining room!
November 21st, 2008 at 10:22 am
For some reason, I feel like I’ve eaten turducken before. Maybe it was just a dream…
November 21st, 2008 at 10:28 am
turdurken seems like the weirdest thing ever.
are you off from school the week of xmas and the following week? if so we should meet up for dinner one of those weeknights!
November 21st, 2008 at 10:58 am
My cousin made a turduckin in college… I never saw it, but he said it was the best thing he’s ever eaten (*cringe*)
This is a good question… I think ALL of the food at my family dinner is sort of strange because it’s just all SO bad for you… but that’s just me
November 21st, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Oh Paula Dean…I cringe every time I see the amounts of butter she uses.
haha great minds must think alike…I made a pumpkin polenta last night for my BSI submission! I think I’ll still submit it though, because mine was definitely different from yours.
I’ll post my recipe later tonight – my husband took the camera today before I could get the pictures off of it!

I think those cans of “cranberry jelly” are so weird – you know – where it comes out in the shape of a the can?
Freaks me out!
November 21st, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Hey HP – I think those recipes work for the BSI!
I once had Thanksgiving with my sister-in-laws family. It was marshmallow palooza!
A green “watergate” jello salad with walnuts and marshmallows.
Sweet potatoes with mini-marshmallows over the top.
Oyster stuffing (no marshmallows, but equally disgusting!)
And rice krispie treats for dessert!
November 21st, 2008 at 4:26 pm
I guess this isn’t a “weird’ food, but in Japan, (since we don’t have thanksgiving) New Year’s celebration is the biggest thing, and on the night of December 31th, you eat a hot bowl of soba noodles. This is for good luck; you eat it for “long life” “long life of fortune”, like the “long” soba noodles.
November 21st, 2008 at 5:23 pm
Love that Paula Deen!
November 21st, 2008 at 6:23 pm
The thought of turducken makes me gag! I like poultry, but I’m not a big fan of duck, and why stuff the thing with sausage? I’m good with just a regular turkey
As far as strange food, all is pretty straightforward at my Thanksgivings. Every year my grandmother makes a terrible vegetable dish consisting of broccoli and frozen spinach that I avoid like the plague.
November 21st, 2008 at 8:21 pm
I love Paula Deen too! As Heather knows about me, there’s nothing better than fat and happy!!
November 21st, 2008 at 8:58 pm
those cookies look fabulous!!
i’ve never had a carrot cake cookie, but I might have to give them a try.
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:50 am
I think the weirdest holiday food I’ve ever had is this red Jell-O salad (??) that has shown up at various family gatherings.
November 22nd, 2008 at 3:26 am
Yea that combination of meats sounds a little…hmm…weird?
November 22nd, 2008 at 10:56 am
awww i just saw your comment on meghann’s blog! love you!
