She Says: Some Heads are Just Made for Crowns.
I meant to post last night, but then I started watching Painted Babies at 17 and I was too enthralled to turn away from the T.V. In case you don’t know, Painted Babies was a documentary following toddlers (“darling dolls”) and their families compete in pageants. Quite disturbing. Painted Babies at 17 is the sequel and shows how two of the painted babies evolved. One girl was still competing in the same kinds of pageants. When asked if crowns are hard to wear she said, “Some heads are just made for crowns.” Mine, I guess, was not. The other girl, the biggest winner as a kid, retired from pageants at 7 and was now in high school at a boarding school. She seemed well adjusted, but she said she felt more grown up than other kids her age. When I was watching it made me sad. These little girls are learning that they win things (cars and money) for being beautiful. They get spray tanned, wear makeup, sing disturbing songs and reveal their navels before the age of 6.
Friday night my family and I decorated my mom’s Christmas trees. I had pizza strips (I had 6 little sqares, which was probably 3 too many) and some plain yogurt with granola. The granola made a nice little sweet treat, I would buy it again only if it came in little packets like the sample. I can’t be trusted around things like big bags of granola.

Saturday, I went shopping literally alllll day. After a run (I took Friday off so my legs were nice and well rested), my mom, sister and I went to the RISD Alumni Holiday Sale then to Providence Place Mall. We left the house at 9:30 and didn’t get home until 5. Allll day shopping. At the mall I got a salad.

When I got home, I had a Dr. P, Food For Life Genesis English Muffin (blue package), Chickpeas and spinach. Then I had more yogurt, but this time I added wheat germ and Apple Pumpkin Butter.

In other exciting news, Mark is apartment hunting for us. I am moving back to NJ after Christmas and we need a place to live! I send him apartments to look at and he checks them out and sends me video. It’s a good system. Right now the biggest obstacle is finding a place that has two parking spots for us. In some towns near him you can’t park on the street over night and we don’t want to be worrying about our cars all the time.
Alright, I am going to run while watching Starter Wife on USA. Have a glorious Sunday! I’ll be back with the Cookie of the Day later tonight.

I love your apartment hunting technique! Its important that you both like where you’re going to be living!! How was the shopping? Did you get everything you need? I’m off to run too! Hope you have a nice one

Good job with the apartment hunting!!
Have a nice run!!

I like your apartment-hunting technique!
I went to college with a girl who had done pageants her whole life and she didn’t understand why everyone didn’t do them- to her, it was just a part of growing up, like taking dance class or playing tee-ball.

Oh boy I saw that Painted babies-CREEPY!
Great idea for the apt! Good luck

Eeeek, disturbing indeed!!
Good luck with the apartment-hunting!!
December 14th, 2008 at 11:01 am
good luck with apt hunting guys!
i’m the same way with granola. and certain cereal. good thing is, they do sell the smaller packets of granola (even on amazon, sometimes with pretty great deals)!
December 14th, 2008 at 11:06 am
I think I saw that first show. You’re right, it was really sad. The girls were just little girls – when they talked and stuff, it was really obvious – but they looked like adults. It was weird!
I’M SO HAPPY YOU AND MARK ARE GOING TO BE TOGETHER AGAIN! Are you excited?! Whee!
December 14th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Erica: I got some good things, but I still need a few more items.
Erin: Yes, I am very excited.
ttfn: Do they sell them in stores?
December 14th, 2008 at 11:33 am
i’ve watching something else kinda of like that; i agree, v. weird.
yay for getting an apt w/ mark!!!
December 14th, 2008 at 11:58 am
My grocery store sells those sample sized packages of Bear Naked Granola by the box. Look in your cereal section – hope you can find some. Good luck with the apt. search!
Spray tans at age 6?!? That makes me really sad.

Shopping and apartment hunting, good times!
December 14th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
I saw that documentary and couldn’t help but notice that all the mom’s were fat and gross! You can’t tell me that a 2 year old “asks” to be in a beauty pagent! It is very distubing!
Hope Mark does well on the apartment hunting! Fingers are crossed.
And yes, parking in some towns suck. When my husband and I first lived together, no overnight parking, so it was a huge hassle!
December 14th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
I wish I would have watched that! I saw it on my guide, but didn’t realize what it was about. I will never understand child pageants, so I’m fascinated by these people who build their lives on them. Sick.
Good luck with the apartment hunting!

Happy Sunday Heather! So exciting you and Mark will soon be reunited.
December 14th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
I also got and LOVED the Bear Naked granola sample. I am so happy that a $1 off coupon came with it. I just keep forgetting to look for it in the market.
Is it bad that I can’t tear John away from the Lifetime Original Movies he’s been watching back-to-back since 7AM?
December 14th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
So exciting about the apartment hunting!! I have a guilty obsession with The Starter Wife… Debra Messing bugs me usually, but I love her in that show.
December 14th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
yes, great technique for apartment hunting, I guess it will work for any kind of shopping when I distant couple. I’ll implement it for my ring hunting.
great eats! I got that granola sample too, it’s just okay I think.
December 14th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Thats exciting about the apartment searches and its definitely a great system! I’m the same way with granola so I never buy it, but always want to…I’m constantly picking at bits at the restaurant
December 14th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Kiddie pageants freak me out. Did you see “Little Miss Sunshine”? Craziness.
December 14th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Oh, I think I saw that a while back. It was so disappointing to see that little girls were exposed to such views of beauty. It’s horrible!
December 14th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
woo! that is awesome about the apartment, what a hassle with parking?? That’s a lame rule about overnight…AND soo freaky about those little girls, yikes!
December 14th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
oooo fun apartment hunting:) GOOD LUCK. I love NJ by the way, one of my college roomies lives there!
December 14th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Oh i turned that show on last night and had to turn it off because it was so disturbing… I never “got” the beauty queen thing!
December 14th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
yay for moving to NJ… are you moving to north or south jersey?
good luck w/ the search
December 14th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
I love that salad it looks so green and fresh.
December 14th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
I think I saw something very similar on MTV…it sort of freaked me out to see them spray tanning and getting fake teeth at 7 in case a tooth fell out. I’m sure I never entered because my mom knew I would just make the other girls feel bad… ok fine I was chubby.
December 14th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
Good luck with the apartment hunt! I love that granola. I just got my free sample last week.
December 14th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Yay for apartment hunting! How fun!
I just got my free sample of that granola too!
December 14th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
Yummy meals! I love Dr. Praeger burgers! I live in NJ, good luck with the apartment hunting. We just moved out of ours and into a house. Yay for Jersey!
December 14th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Good luck with the apartment hunting! Mal and I will be doing that soon enough!
December 14th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
I always feel so sad for those little girls, of course I instantly think of Jon Bennet. So exciting that you and Mark will have a new apartment soon!!
December 14th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Your apartment hunting technique sounds a lot like mine, always gotta worry about parking. Out here, I will not not have a garage. With the amount of snow we get, it’s a necessity.
Your pizza squares look amazing, did you make them or were they ordered in?
December 14th, 2008 at 11:43 pm
100% agree on the cliff ranking !! i have yet to try the pear but the gingerbread is out of this world!
December 15th, 2008 at 1:11 am
I’ve watched documentaries like that before. I agree, it is a bit disturbing. Everyone is entitled to their own point of view, but to me the message just isn’t right.
So exciting that you are moving back to NJ! Apartment hunting with Mark sounds like fun
I like your method!
December 15th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
That documentary sounds interesting (and sad). Is there a book form?
How exciting that you are moving to NJ! What part? My boyfriend’s rents live right on the border of Pennsylvania and NJ (Ok, not RIGHT on the border…more like 45 minutes from it, but still.) I would love to meet the Hangry Pants team at some point.
