She Says: The Snowman Family
The students at my school have an assignment to share a tradition or holiday that is important in his/her family. If I were given this assignment there would be lots of traditions to choose from. My mom is a firm believer in traditions. No other time of year, however, is filled with more traditions than Christmas. I think that is why I love this time of year.
One such tradition involves intricate and specific decorating. Several things have been in my home for as long as I can remember.
Exhibit 1: The Snowpeople Family.
They were made by my grandma out of 80s sweat socks. She made one for my mom, dad, me and my three older sisters. Then, my brother came along, so she needed to make one more. I am the cutest one all the way to the right. My brother, only boy and youngest of five, is of course, in the middle.
Cookie of the Day: Egg Nog Oaties
I made these tonight! I was procastinating after dinner (leftover Three Bean and Lentil Soup w/ an Ezek. & PB), looking for something to do other than my Exit Portfolio and I saw the package of Instant Egg Nog Mix I received from Megan.
I thought it would be great in cookies and I was right! The egg nog flavor was apparent, but not overpowering and the texture was light — soft on the inside and slightly crunchy on the outside. Not a chewy cookie, but not a crispy cookie either.
Egg Nog Oaties
- 1 cup Whole Wheat Pastry Flour
- 1 cup oats
- 1 t baking soda
- 1 egg
- 1 egg white
- 1/2 stick (4 T) unsalted butter (softened)
- 1 4.25 oz package of Instant Egg Nog Mix (I bet any kind of instant egg nog mix would work fine)
Combine flour, oats and baking soda in a bowl. In another bowl, cream package of egg nog mix, egg, egg white and butter. Pour egg mix into flour mix. Mix (I use my hands) until ingredients are well combined. Roll about 1 T of dough into a ball. Bake at 350* for about 10 minutes.

I am a HUGE tradition person, too….it wouldn’t be Christmas without the regulars.
Just when I was about to ask God why I like mostly all of the foods on this green earth, I realized I don’t like egg nog. I WISH I did. People get so excited about it, I always feel like I’m missing out on some good cookies or something.
December 10th, 2008 at 10:48 am
Snowmen family – too cute. Your cookies sound like the perfect holiday treat. I’d much rather eat my eggnog than drink it

I’m not a big fan of egg nog …only because of the texture. I do like the flavor. I could definitely try these cookies.
That’s a big family. My snowman family is only a threesome but my kids love them =).
December 10th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Cookies > liquid egg nog!
December 10th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
truly a fascinating and totally festive cookie for the season!
December 11th, 2008 at 12:03 am
did i just, yep, i just peed my pants because those snowpeople are HILARIOUS!! I mean don’t get me wrong, not in anyway do I mean to offend granny because making them out of 80’s sweatsocks, well that takes serious talent. But I half expect your next post to be a picture of your baby brother in the middle to be staring down your sparkley blue eyed far right snowgal.
I think its fantastic yall have traditions like that- and 80s sweatsocks, i cant think of any other use of them now that I know of snowpeople
December 11th, 2008 at 12:21 am
I love the Snowman Family! Traditions are wonderful – they really make me even more excited for the holidays.
Great cookies!! I think the addition of instant egg nog was genius – I will have to look for a packet at the store!

I’m looking for instant egg nog mix and I saw the packet on this site of
Cookie of the Day: Egg Nog Oaties. I used to buy a mix that looked similar to that. I can’t find it anymore. Can you tell me where to get it or who makes it?
