He Says: Wildtime Is Calling
A couple of nights ago Heather lovingly made Quinoa and Lentils with a leafy green salad for dinner. While I appreciated the gesture and most of the tastes (I didn’t care for the fresh parsley), I had to muster the courage to break the bad news to her.
I cannot survive on little pebbles and seeds.
I don’t crave red meat like yer stereotypical football lovin’, gun totin’, American macho male but it does take a lot to fill me belly. For most of my life I would eat dinner as prepared by my mother, big dinners, mind you and immediately follow it up with a large bowl of cereal. Honey Nut Cheerios, Frosted Mini Wheats, Cracklin’ Oat Bran, Quaker Oatmeal Squares… Blueberry Morning!
Oh, the Blueberry Morning.
While I can definitely still put it away, George Bush attacked Iraq and Afghanistan at the same time while the rest of the country got confused by the difference between “debit” and “debt”. Now, our money doesn’t work like it used to and cereal is reserved for only the those commanding pawns of the Opium trade.
You get the point – and so did she. That’s why today she made this excellent mashup of marinated chicken breast, brown rice, and stir fried veggies and chick-peas. Very, very enjoyable and just the right amount of filling.

This is me, impressed by the manliness of this dish. Notice the odd covering on the wall of our kitchen. I can’t seem to move into a normal apartment, without crazy people or crazy architectural constructs.

Yes, the chicken was filling, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying some Grizzlies Granola All Organic Trail Mix sent to us from Wildtime Foods.

Good sized bag, nice assortment of fresh nuts and dried fruits. It has dried pears, roasted almonds, dried nectarines, roasted walnuts, Thompson raisins, cashews, and dried pineapple (in that order according to the ingredients list).
Heather is asleep now resting for her first day of substitute teaching tomorrow but I know she would want me to tell you that she hijacked all the dried pears (and I think the pineapples too)! She wouldn’t say “hijacked”. She would also use interior punctuation, but hey, no one’s perfect.
I had a little problem opening the bag at first but once I figured out that you have to separate the ridged plastic material at the top, things were all gravy.

Although not specifically labeled with a weight (or, oddly, a number of servings per container value) this bag is plump with goodness which is why I wish it were re-sealable. After the chicken dish, even my appetite couldn’t finish the whole bowl!

I KNOW!

I know what you mean…there is something very satisfying about rice that you don’t get from the smaller grains. That meals looks delicious! You’re a lucky guy

Good luck substituting today Heather!! So glad you got called!
January 29th, 2009 at 7:07 am
I had this exact conversation with my male boss about how vegetarian food might be great and delicious, but for someone who normally eats meat, it just doesn’t fill them like it’s supposed to. ironic.

(1) You had another piece of chicken – be honest.
(2) interior punctuation is the correct punctuation
(3) Desmond seems intrigued by your trail mix!

This is my first visit, Heather/Mark.
I have to say, I can’t imagine what it would be like to share a blog with my hubby!
January 29th, 2009 at 7:39 am
Good luck Heather!! I love that Lost is on in the background.
January 29th, 2009 at 7:44 am

Good to see a man doin’ some blogging on a food blog, and you’re funny, too. And your impressed-ness over that meal really shines through. Good job!

GOOD LUCK HEATHER!!! That is a fab stir fry – nice and manly!
January 29th, 2009 at 9:04 am
Yay, I’m glad Heather got a call to substitute!
Yummy dinner too!
January 29th, 2009 at 9:16 am
Mark, if that’s your impression of a typical American macho male then bring me a beer, pull up a couch, and join me!
(Although the first time I read it I thought you said GUT totin’ instead of GUN totin’… the former is much more appropriate for me.)
January 29th, 2009 at 9:50 am
Best of luck on your first substitute job Heather!
A) That dinner looks amazing…and parsley free.
B) I love dried pineapple but had to stop buying it. I could not stop eating it!
C) Love Desmond.

looks delicious!

I had to learn to step it up with meal size when I moved in with my boyfriend . . . the key seems to be making a whole box of pasta / whole pot of veggie-meat sauce / big salad and allowing each person to self-serve . . . there may or may not be leftovers the next day! Making a side of rice & beans, no matter what the meal, seems to work as well, since that’s cheap and filling.

good luck on your first day subbing Heather! it must be so great to get out there and earn some loot! : )
my BF would NEVER stand for veggie meals haha..

I agree with the rice and beans. I felt bad telling Heather: “This isn’t enough”, but alas, it had to be done and now we’re both better for it. Honesty is the best policy, especially when it comes to food.
January 29th, 2009 at 11:12 am
My husband has to tell me that every now and then. Or he decides to spare my feelings and go remedy the situation with doughnuts or the like later on.
I don’t know about Heather, but I grew up with all sisters, so it’s taking me awhile to figure out what constitutes a sufficiently manly meal. A continuing feature on manly v. unmanly food would be much appreciated.

“Oh what a Blueberry Morning! Oh what a Blueberry DAY!!!” That’s me singing
So that look means, “I am impressed by the manliness of this plate!” I thought it meant “You want me to eat this?!” I am a lot more familiar with that look…
January 29th, 2009 at 11:47 am
HAHA! I can’t survive on pebbles either! That made my day. That trail mix looks awesome! I’m gonna say that’s another one of my weaknesses. I have to be careful b/c if I don’t portion I honesty can eat a whole bag.
January 29th, 2009 at 11:47 am
Yum, red meat.
That looks like a tasty dinner. I always have scissors and/or a knife on hand to open bags. Otherwise I have “issues” with opening bags (aka I can’t open them and if I finally do, everything spills out all over the floor).
January 29th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
The trail mix sounds great – I’ve never tried dried pear or nectarine. Yum! As for the apartment, my fiance and I have also lived in – and currently live in – apartments designed with, um, interesting tastes.
Good luck today, Heather!

January 29th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Mm I eat cereal like it’s going out of style…if I had to live on one food that would probably be it… oh wait maybe peanut butter
January 29th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
Good luck Heather!
If only we all had your “problem” of needing to eat constantly!
January 29th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
the trail mix looks yummy but I have to say the dinner looks even better….your girl can cook
!
January 29th, 2009 at 5:32 pm

Very funny post. My hubby would also be right there on the lentils and quinoa offering as a dinner. Must have real source of protein at dinner or I am in the doghouse!
