She Says: Now that is bread!
Last week I tried to make Victoria’s Whole Wheat Flaxseed Bread, but mine did not look nearly as pretty because I forget to add oil. I really wanted to continue practicing my homemade bread baking, so when I went home this weekend I begged and pleaded my mom to let me borrow her Kitchen Aid Mixer and she finally gave in.

I have to bring it back in February, but for now, I am pumping out the bread.
Last night I tried the Mixed Brown Bread from p. 291 of Apples for Jam. I followed 90% of the recipe. I used the Buckwheat, Rye, Spelt and Wheat Flours, but I did not have Bread Flour so I added more Wheat instead. I also used pumpkin seeds instead of sunflower and sesame.

I love this bread! It’s quite tasty and soft. I had it with big chunks of cheese and an apple for lunch. Baking your own bread is not hard, it just requires patience and time. It’s well worth the effort because nothing tastes as good and brings a wonderful smell to your kitchen like fresh bread!

Also, Honest Foods planks and bars have brand new packaging.

I can’t wait to dive in! I’ve seen them on many blogs, but never had any of the bars (formally known as Country Squares I believe) and only tried a bite of the Blueberry Vanilla Crackle Plank. In fact, I didn’t wait. I already tried a Maple Almond Crunch Plank, which was off the radar delicious. Thank you for the samples Honest Foods!
I’m off to the gym then I have to buy envelopes, which is something I hate to buy. I also need to get a new magazine for the elliptical. Anyone read a good magazine recently?
Have a fabulous Tuesday afternoon.

The bread looks awesome! I agree, although making your own bread does require some time and patience, it is SO worth it! As soon as I get my mixer out of storage, I plan to be a bread baking maniac
Enjoy the gym chica

That bread looks fabulous! I need to find some time to try my hand at homemade bread soon. All these lovely loaves I’ve been seeing on blogs have given me a hankering to make my own!
I’ve tried those bars and they are GREAT!! Enjoy them!

The bread I buy is incredibly expensive, so I’m definitely considering baking my own.
Congrats on another diploma!

Maybe you should just tell your mom that you “lost” her KitchenAid =)
I’ve read a lot of mags lately, but they’re all the same, you know? I don’t know why I subscribe…what a waste! I need to find a way to read blogs while working out instead!!!
January 27th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
Your bread looks beautiful. I’ve never made my own bread other than sweet dessert types. The smell alone makes me want to try.
As far as magazines go, I love reading The Week. Quick easy way to stay updated on current affairs as I never have time to watch the news or read the paper. It’s the only magazine subscription I have. Probably not the best workout read though. I need some good Hollywood trash to get me through a cardio session.

The magazine All You has a Fitness version out right now. I bought mine at Wal-Mart. I have not read it yet, but thought I’d suggest it as a change from the standard fitness mags.

I hope we both stay this happy!

Heather: Today’s bread was great! You are getting so damned good at it. The crust was crunchy and the inside was soft and much lighter than the other 2 batches. I wanted to buy soup at the work cafe to dip it but my colleagues gave the soups crappy reviews.
January 27th, 2009 at 4:15 pm
Wow I am so impressed with your bread making skills- that looks absolutely delicious! I can’t wait until we move to a bigger apartment so I can buy all the kitchen gadget tools (like the kitchen aid) that I don’t have room for now.

I read magazines way too fast to justify buying them! I make do with whatever the gym has or bring one of my many books sitting on my “need to read” book.

January 27th, 2009 at 6:27 pm

I read Women’s Wear Daily and they recommended the unknown-designer brand capri pants with a yellow stripe because yellow is a happy color.
January 27th, 2009 at 11:33 pm
That bread looks so professional, like you could sell it at Seven Stars or something!
January 28th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
The bread looks amazingly delicious… and I think you made it shine with that cheese/apple combo. I think I have to make some bread this weekend!!
So jealous of your honest food bars… I’ve been looking all over for them with no luck. Was this a freebie or did you purchase these online?
January 28th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
I should try to make some bread. Unfortunately I don’t have a bread pan or whatever…perhaps someday!
I liked the old packaging for Honest Foods…they were so cute! Love the planks AND the bars! In fact, I have 6 BOXES of the bars in my pantry right now. I did the BOGO on their website and bought 2 trays (so got 4) but there was some mix-up and they sent me 6! I was quite excited about that!
