She Says: Build Your Own Salad Bar
One of my favorite things about living in Manhattan was the wide availability of “Build Your Own” salad bars. I guess they are pretty common, but it was my first introduction to them. I loved that I could pretty much go anywhere and know I would be able to get a giant salad filled with all sorts of goodies. Well, I don’t live there anymore, but that doesn’t mean the salad fun is over. I developed a much cheaper alternative.
At my awesome and cheap salad bar was:

- Romaine Lettuce
- Broccoli
- Sprouts
- Blueberries
- Chicken with Zaatar from Rhodey Girl
- Red Peppers
- Tomatoes
- Celery
- Egg Whites
- Red Onion
- Smoked Almonds from snacktrition
I piled on everything except the chicken, which was for Marky. He liked the Zaaatar and said it made the chicken taste “Greek.”

While elevating and icing the ankle.
I enjoyed every bit of my salad, but my favorite bites were egg whites and blueberries!

Extending the blueberry theme, I just made myself some Blueberry Rooibos Tea. I love drinking Rooibos and this kind specifically is wonderful hot and cold. Did you know Rooibos is not a “real tea,” but actually an herb?
From the South African Rooibos Council, “The brew made from the dried Rooibos leaves is therefore a herbal infusion (known as a tisane) rather than a tea, but is widely known as Rooibos tea.”

I love how it has whole dried blueberries in it.

Mark bought me that red mug as part of a set of four mugs and matching spoons for Valentine’s Day four years ago at the William Sonoma in the King of Prussia Mall.

Red, Pink and Orange
There was a purple set, but sadly, they broke. I love them, use them all year around (I am a Valentine’s Day and heart fanatic) and mix and match the colors for fun!
And that’s it for me. I am off to ice and compress the ankle.

What a FUN dinner! I love salad bars!
I did not know that about Rooibos… you learn something new every day!
hope your ankle feels better soon! love the make your own salad bar! you and mark are just adorable!!!
Awesome dinner, I’ve been craving salad lately!
Yum a make your own salad bar sounds (and looks) amazing!
I miss those salad bars too! We just found one last weekend in Palo Alto that is decent, but it’s nothing compared to Cafe Metro (the ones that give you unlimited toppings anyway – I hated how some of them charged you by the topping). There’s a cafe metro right under Bobby’s fam’s apt that we would go to all the time. Yum!
awesome salad bar. and good luck rehab-ing the ankle! that really blows.
Ooo yummy salad bar! Very nice!
I didn’t know that about Rooibos! Thanks for the info…yours looks so pretty and I love your tea set.
Love William Sonoma!!
And tasty tasty salad!
hmm rooibos makes me wanna sing “row row row your bos, gently in the TEeeaaaa…. merrily merrily merrily merrily life is but a dreeeeeaaaamm.”
an herb and not a tea?!? i’ve been had.
Love the salad bar!
I love those tea mugs! Mark has good taste.
mmm blueberries are amazing. I loooove them! That looks like such a fun dinner.
I also love William Sonoma. I can spend hours in there.
More than the salad bars, I was amazed by the hot-food bars located in the liquor stores in NYC. Know what I’m talking about? Full-on Chinese food, mac ‘n cheese, roasted potatoes, etc available 24 hours a day, one aisle down from the tampons and the beer? I’m sure that food’ll kill ya, but the fact that it existed impressed me.
I just watched your video. I v. much loved the part that goes something like…oh…what was it again? Oh yeah, “I’LL ASK THE QUESTIONS HERE!”
So romantic! And definitely something I would say.
That salad bar looks awesome! Egg whites and blueberries? I have to try that!
The tea looks so pretty! And I love the V-day spoons and mug!
Hope your ankle is better!
Nice salad bar. I like the “I’m not going to dirty a bowl, so I’ll just make piles on the cutting board” action.
Just getting caught up on your posts and I am so sorry to hear about your injury
I hope you’re up and moving soon.
Love your at-home salad bar. Make-your-own salads are definitely a favorite of mine, too!

Sorry that the purple set broke
I’m lovin the salad bar. I LOVE going to salad bar’s. I think I just like to stare at mass amounts of vegetables =) But they do get expensive. Very cute idea!
Groovy salad bar!
YES the very first time I encountered a Manhattan make your own salad I couldn’t believe my good luck — not knowing these places were EVERYWHERE. I remember getting SO many things in my salad because I thought it was my only chance!
Then of course when I moved to the city that was my lunch every single day. And now because of my stomach probs I can’t eat salad anymore which makes me so sad. My boyfriend gets one of those salads literally every night for dinner and I have to sit there and watch him eat it!
Anyway, don’t want to be a downer – your food looks great and I hope your ankle feels better!
I heart those valentine spoons! (LOL – i typed that and then realized how lame it sound, even though I didn’t mean it like that – i “heart” them – ahh!)
that looks like a pretty kick ass homemade salad bar, nicely done!
like the salad bar! i am waay behind, but hope your ankle feels better!
Cute salad bar
Hope you’re feeling a little better after the icing. Ouch, sounds painful.
i love the salad bar idea, much much cheaper than those you pay based weight. ooh that tea looks yummy!
I like the spread!
Fun!!! Gotta love a good crazy mixed up salad
I love the build your own salad bar concept! When I’m making salad for the family I usualy just set out all the individual toppings and let them go to town.
