She Says: Sugar Shock Follows Hunger

Everyone have a good Tuesday?

My first day at work went well. It’s a really laid back environment and the staff seems like they are responsible and work well together, so that’s good. I wipped out my raw lunch, but salads are pretty common so no one noticed.

I had leftover Raw Sundried Tomato Pesto mixed with Spinach and Tomatoes. I also had my carrots and was completely full … for about 20 minutes.

Then I had my banana and an apple, which filled me for about an hour. I was kind of hungry and caved when everyone else started munching on Goldfish Pretzels. I had a couple dixie cups full, which made me artificially full for awhile, but by 6:00 I was starving again. Luckily, my house is v. close, so I just walked home and had two pieces of bread (Left: Honey Oatmeal Bread, Right: Oatmeal Yeast Bread) with a bunch of Almond Butter. Delicious, but this wasn’t really how I like to have dinner. I guess I didn’t plan for my hunger very well today.

I headed to the gym for kickboxing, but I think I got the time wrong, because nothing was going on. Instead, I used the elliptical for an hour while watching Oscar fashion recaps.

I felt like the sandwich was “dinner,” so I had snacks.

One delicious honest foods apple ginger bar and some Sunbird Snacks Cherry Fruit Cocktail because I am currently obsessed with dried apricots! I think it’s obvious that I should have had a real dinner at some point today because now I am sugar sick. Oh well. Live and learn.

Erin asked me how raw foods were affecting my digestion. Totally valid question and something I am interested in myself. During the course of my normal eating, I feel like my stomach gets slightly bulbous and very hard and I am never sure why. Does anyone else ever feel like that? I don’t think I am eating a high enough percentage of raw food to take notice of its affect on me yet, but if I do notice any changes, I will (discreetly) keep you informed.

Yumm love the Apple Ginger bar! I know how you feel about having a real dinner. I never feel right even if I have enough snacks to equal a dinner!

  2. FoodsThatFit Says:

I love dried apricots! For Christmas neighbor gifts, I dipped them halfway into dark chocolate and sprinkled chopped pistachios on them. They were beautiful and delicious!

  3. Meg Says:

I tend to get that feeling in my stomach sometimes at night. I always get it when I eat lots of high fiber veggies.

  4. Shelby Says:

    That bread looks fabulous!

  5. Erica Says:

hmmmm are you guys watching your protein intake? I am finding that with my change in diet, my tummy has felt the same way (after meals)and has led to all kinds of tummy issues. I am going to try to focus on my protein intake and hope the problems get better! Let me know your thoughts

I love dried apricots too, and dried mango slices, so good!

Congrats on your first day at work, I know that can be kind of nerve racking!

I live within walking distance of my job too (about a 15 minute walk) which is so nice! I love not having to worry about traffic!

Your salad looks so yummy! I’m crazy about apricots too, but sadly I’m out at the moment. I’m glad you had a good first day! Yippy :-)

    hey girl!
omg when i had my first “raw meal” at a raw food restaurant i had a BAD stomach ache and so did my mum. this happens to A LOT of people!

omg i want that dried fruit mix :) yum!

  11. Matt Says:

raw foods sometimes make me feel pretty quigley inside for a little bit. i assume that’s a good thing.

  12. Marianne Says:

Dried apricots are pretty awesome – I buy a larger resealable bag from Costco so I always have them on hand :)

  13. Caroline Says:

Love the colors in this post!

  14. Kailey (SnackFace) Says:

Oh man, I wish I could help with the slight tummy woes- alas, I do not know. I adore your bread n’ butter dinner though :)

  15. carolinebee Says:

haha UGH my stomach has that feeling right now…hate my life! CONGRATS times a million on the job, i’m so happy for you! It sounds like a great interim thing, and also a connection to what you really want to do full time. That is too bad you missed the kickboxing, but definitely go if u know it’s happening again! It is totally my class of choice, i take TKB at 24 hour..so who knows if you like it, but it’s silly and involves techno-ish cheesy music so u can’t go wrong :D

  16. Sarah (lovINmytummy) Says:

I think this post proves why I couldn’t do the raw food thing and would have trouble even going vegan. It seriously pained me to even read about your hunger. I’m sure if you made it your lifestyle, you’d find a way to make it work and have each meal be balanced. Your eats just seemed kind of empty today. Your poor muscles ;)

  17. coco Says:

I get bloated more often when I eat raw food like salad, fruit. I don’t know….. maybe we have to do more digestion?

  18. MizFit Says:

Im with Sarah. but that’s no shock huh?
and Im also completely hoarse from allergies.

all set up yesterday to film for you and couldnt talk.

    may pantomime today ;)

  19. Sarah (Tales of Expansion) Says:

first, congrats on the new job!! was yesterday just training, or did you get to start doing the after-school program for real already?

i agree that your body probably wanted more protein yesterday! though i don’t know what types of raw protein there are — just nuts and seeds? or more? hmmm. i get that over-sugared feeling esp when i don’t get a good, solid meal in my tum first. and also, i wouldn’t say my belly gets bulbous and hard when i eat … more like large and squishy, haha.

  20. VeggieGirl Says:

Yeah, definitely “up” the protein – I actually eat MORE than 1 gram of protein per body weight (since I’m trying to gain muscle mass), and it helps with energy levels and such as well.

  21. Lauren Says:

It’s great that you enjoyed your first day and that you can walk home!

Where do you find the Honest Foods bars?

  22. Lesley Says:

Hmm, this stomach issue has perked my interest because I eat A LOT of veggies and fruit everyday and I feel that same way. I feel like (especially at the end of the day, but certinaly not limited to just then) that my stomach is VERY tight and bloated. My husband tells me it’s because of all the fiber filled foods such as veggies I eat that our body takes so long to break down and digest.

I have not found a solution to this yet and I really like eating all the veggies and fruit that I eat each day. I saw some of the comments mention more protein, maybe I should try that … anyways, if you figure anything else out, definitely keep us updated!

  23. K Says:

I’ve noticed at night my stomach does a lot of “talking” not hungry-grumbles but digestion-grumbles and it is kind of aggravating! Glad you had a great first day :)

  24. Mariposa Says:

i get the same way after eating lots of raw veggies and most raw fruits i cant eat anyway- but the veggies bug me.. slowly i guess is key to changing up a diet…

    and drink plenty of water!

  25. Holly Says:

Congratulations on your job!!! It sounds perfect. What a great way to open doors, and I’m very jealous you can walk home. :-)

Anxious to hear what others have to say on the digestion front…

  26. Kristie Says:

I know exactly what you mean with the big bloaty stomach. I always have weird and annoying stomach issues it seems. Hm. The comments were kind of insightful here though, up the protein? I suspect I’m low on it sometimes… I hope you’re able to figure it out with the raw eatings and such. And be able to satisfy your hunger more. A lot of my days lately have been more snacky than meal based but that is just never very satisfying eh? Ugh.

  27. Heather McD (Heather Eats Almond Butter) Says:

That’s the one thing about raw foods – they never quite fill me up. Maybe if you added some raw nuts to your veggie salads or spread raw nut butter on your fruit at lunch, you’d get feel more satiated?

I just looked at the recipe for the oatmeal honey bread. Maybe I’ll make that one today.

Congrats on a good first day on the job!!! I’m glad the staff works well together as my coworkers either make or break a job experience for me.

  28. rhodeygirl Says:

completely off topic, but every time i go to throw away a ziploc without reusing it, i think of you and your recycling of bags, feel really guilty and reuse it!

  29. Andrea (Off Her Cork) Says:

It seems a lot of people have have talked about raw foods only filling them up for a short amount of time. I know that when I have a salad, I need to have some sort of protein to go with it. Either in the salad itself, or along side (like a piece of cheese and bread, for example). Otherwise I get full for about 1/2 an hour and need something else.

  30. Aimee Says:

Ditto that I hate when I am so hungry that I have to eat right when I get in the door and then don’t have what I really would have liked to eat. Although too bad this happens too often for me!

  31. Michelle @ What Does Your Body Good? Says:

To stay full on raw foods at first you have to eat a LOT! haha but then for people on all-raw diets you adjust and end up eating actually very little. The food is so efficient you just don’t need a lot. But for a stomach just starting out and still eating cooked food, it could mean eating 8 bananas for breakfast or something like that! Also, raw foods are absolutely more difficult to digest and you might consider how you are combining them. I noticed that salads with fruit always gave me a belly full of gas. It takes some time for your stomach to learn to handle more raw food but it’s worth it, and learning about food combining will help!

  32. lauren Says:

your salad looks so bright. love that. i am super jealous you can walk home from work.

  33. She Says: Breakfast Cookies Are a Raw Delight | Hangry Pants Says:

[...] was interesting to read the comments from my post regarding belly problems/hard bellies. A few people mentioned I might be lacking in protein and/or [...]

  34. Erin Says:

Thanks for answering my question Heather! I don’t get a hard tummy but it definitely swells up a lot due to the fiber. I eat a lot of it.

  35. Jenn (eating bender) Says:

I love that bread! Holy majoly! I’m glad that the first day at work went well :)

I have a lot of wacky stomach issues and have never been able to pinpoint a source. I feel ya on the bloated/hard tummy. It really sucks.
