She Says: Surprise, You’re Showered.
Today was my brother’s fiancé’s surprise bridal shower (she actually read that I was going to a shower on my post yesterday, but didn’t think it was for her!). They met in the 2nd grade and have been boyfriend and girlfriend pretty much since then. They have the funniest stories about one another and about their relationship. Today I learned that my brother gave Megan a necklace in the 7th grade (which my sister had to drive him to the mall to buy because he was too embarrassed to ask my mom), then when he broke up with her she buried on the campus of Providence College. When they got back together and she tried to find it, she couldn’t it. Anyway, they are extremely lovey dovey and adorable.
For the shower, I made her some White Chocolate Lime Cookies. I read about them at Have Cake, Will Travel and have made them three times since starting the blog. I absolutely love them. The lime and white chocolate chips are a super team. They’re light and refreshing, but also a little naughty. I recommend undercooking them slightly (12 or 13 minutes instead of 14) if you like softer cookies more than crispy.
At the shower I tried to take Mark’s advice and not get emotional about the food. The emotion, in this case, would be excitement about all of the wonderful food before me. I had a couple plates of veggies and some cucumber yogurt dip.
And a delicious bruschetta.
And a delicious fruity beverage with rainbow sherbet.
For lunch I had delicious spinach salad that had yummy strawberries on it. I also had a little bit of each main item, from the top down, eggplant parmesan, lasagna and veggie lasagna. Everything was delicious, but I am partial to my momma’s eggplant. It’s fried and I love it.
Megan was adorable when opening her presents because whenever she opened something she said, “Oh, Billy is going to love this!” My brother is quite the foodie and was probably more excited than the average groom about things like a new tea pot, pancake griddle and Le Creuset pot.
I made an awesome ribbon bouquet.
From the table of desserts, I chose a …
Red Velvet Cupcake, which I was v. excited to have because I’ve been reading a lot about them on other blogs. It was homemade and delicious! Now I am looking forward to their wedding cake, which is also red velvet.
It was a wonderful, celebratory day. It takes a lot to keep up with my family. There are a lot of us, we all talk at the same time and carry on multiple conversations at once. Over the years, Megan has shown that she is a perfect fit. I am very excited to have a new sister soon.

Aw, shucks. So heart warming.
I’m in love with the idea of those white chocolate lime cookies. I’m going to dream about them tonight.
No offense to Mark, but I’d wish you’d marry one of my brothers. Lucky Megan.

I think the bruschetta looks amazing! What a fun shower! I wish I could have another one and get some new kitchen goods!

I’ve always wondered about red velvet cake. It’s an enigma rapped in a riddle to me. What flavor is it? Velvet is not a flavor. It looks delicious, and I want to eat it but never have because I don’t know what flavor to expect.
Megan looks great!

What a cute story.
Nice job on the bouquet! Those are fun to have as a bride!
I can’t believe you get to interview Stephanie! She’s THE COOLEST! Am I right? I’m really pulling for Karla this season.
I love Mark’s approach to eating at parties. I only wish I could cultivate that attitude!

Heather!!!! What a lovely post….my favorite post of the year:) Billy laughed very boisterously when reading about the necklace (he said I shouldn’t tell that story because people will know I’m crazy….geesh)
Yesterday was so wonderful- especially seeing two families meet and blend so well. My two families are so important to me and I consider myself to be beyond fortunate to be a member of your clan- I LOVE loud, I LOVE cooky (is that how you spell cooky?) conversations (digestive problems, etc), and I love all of you~!
Oh, and i have eaten tooooo many of those cookies this morning (Billy started it!).
Thanks again!

Sounds like a wonderful shower…with amazing eats! I loved the necklace story – so sweet.
I need to try those cookies. Lime and white chocolate sounds like an interesting but delicious combo. Do people look surprised when they bite into them?
Enjoy shower #2 and the rest of your weekend Heather!

I like Mark’s “don’t get emotional about the food” way of thinking. I think that I often psyche myself out by getting too wrapped up in a “party food game plan”… I end up over-thinking it which often leads to eating too much. So I agree- it’s best to just chill out. Have a few snacks and get over it.
February 22nd, 2009 at 10:20 am
wow, it’s always great getting new family! I hope you have a great time with your new sister and develop an awesome relationship!
February 22nd, 2009 at 10:57 am
This looks like a very nice time, and they sound like such a sweet couple. Congrats to you on getting a new, wonderful sister
My sister-in-law and I are really close, and it’s nice because I don’t have any sisters.

How fun! Good job with not letting it get emotional…I’m working on not thinking about food so much in general, so I can totally relate.
February 22nd, 2009 at 10:33 pm
what a cute story- childhood sweethearts have the best ones! all your eats look delicious- looove the red velvet!
February 22nd, 2009 at 11:22 pm
Bestie: Red Velvet cake has cocoa in it, but it isn’t really chocolatey or dense because of the buttermilk and vinegar.
February 23rd, 2009 at 2:52 am
Lime & white chocolate sounds like a great combo. Must try out those cookies!
And I’ve still never had, nor even seen, red velvet cake. Maybe I’ll just have to make my own.
February 23rd, 2009 at 5:28 am
Heather! This post made me smile. Its really nice to read about your family and friends and the experiences you partake in. I think the ribbon bouquet is sooo great, how’d you learn to do that? I think you should do a post on that!! That’s so creative, oh the teacher in you!
On another, more edible note, those cupcakes look to die for. I’ve been seeing red velvet every where, too. I want a bite!
Hahaha, no but really, lasagna is so yummy! the food looks delicious and I’m glad to see that you enjoyed everything.
congratulations Hangry’s Brother!!!
