She Says: Fast Food – Raw Style

by Heather Monday, March 2, 2009

Thank you for your positive feedback on the new layout. Mark and I like it a lot, but ya know sometimes when you’re looking at something for awhile it becomes hard to see if something is wrong, so if there is anything you think could be improved, please let us know! Or feel free to keep complimenting us. :D

I also wanted to point out a couple of new things:

(1) Heather Trains: This is in a new page in the navigation bar above. If you’re interested, you can look at my half marathon training schedule for March, Aril & May.

(2) Recent Posts: This is in the column on the right. Now my five most recent posts are listed separately from Mark’s. I post more often than Mark and I felt like his great blog work was getting lost in my posts.

Eating Out Raw

Mark and I were out and about in Hoboken and I was determined to find something raw to eat. We went to Energy Kitchen where nothing is over 500 calories and the calorie count for each dish is listed right on the menu. Orders are taken at the counter, salads are made to order and the food is prepared quickly. All I had was my iPhone, so please excuse the burry pictures.

Lots of things on the menu looked tasty, but I got a big salad with just about every veggie offered. I also had a bite (or two) of Mark’s mashed sweet potatoes and those were delicious!

Raw Cashew Butter

Many people have been making their own nut butters (including Heather and Pretty Green Girl on Carrots ‘n’ Cake today), so today I finally made some with Raw Cashews. I used about 1 cup of raw cashews and tossed it in the food processor for probably more than 10 minutes. It sort of looks like hummus, but it tastes like … cashews. It’s good, but not as creamy as a standard nut butter. I wanted to keep it raw, so I didn’t roast the cashews, but I bet that would make it creamier. Anyone have experience making nut butter with raw nuts?

Training Day 2

Today was Strength & Stretch day. I did Level 2 of Jillian Michael’s Shred and two 20 minute yoga downloads, Detox Challenge Flow and  Power Vinyasa Flow #3, which are not that challenging, but are good for stretching. I was a little scattered during my practice because Mark was here & it was a snowy snow day. I guess I was just excited! I hardly ever take a Monday off from running, so it kind of felt weird, but it just means I am even more pumped for tomorrow. I am also engaged in a Polar F6 Heart Rate Monitor Bidding War on EBay.

Does anyone know if the F6 HRM that is not specifically for women is just for men, or is it unisex? For some reason, it’s cheaper. Do you have a HRM? What kind? Do you like it?

i have the polar f6 and i really love it! it’s so helpful, but it isnt so high tech that i cant figure it out (im sooo electronically challenged). i’m not sure if it is unisex, i got the women’s one. hmm, good question.

i SO wish i had one of those energy kitchen’s near me! *jealous*

  2. 2 Kristie says:

WOW. That sounds like the coolest restaurant ever. I wanna go! Your salad looks fab.

As does that cashew butter. That’s kind of strange that it never bothered to get creamy at all, but it still looks completely delicious. I would just want to eat it straight up by the spoonful.

  3. 3 Katie says:

I have the Polar “Running” HRM, and I think its unisex, so I think your’s should be fine, too..

Very impressed with your cashew butter! I might pull a Carrie and register myself just because… I really want a food processor!

  4. 4 Caroline says:

What a cool dining out option! I want to visit!

I have an Timex HRM (I think it’s available on Amazon). I wear it everyday, and I love it.

  5. I have a HRM, its called a watch and my finger. It sucks.

I love the picture of you and Mark at the top of the header. You look like you love each other very much. Awww….

  6. 6 Marianne says:

I have the F6 HRM for women. I think the major difference is probably the design/size, and not the way it functions. It’s probably a bit bigger/bulkier than the woman’s version. It still asks you when you enter your information what gender you are.

I’m intrigued to make my own nut butter as well, but I don’t have a food processor, and I don’t know if my Magic Bullet can handle it.

That restaurant looks really interesting! Nice that they are attempting to make healthy eating out a reality!

  7. 7 Janet says:

Thanks for the shout-out! I don’t have any experience making nut butters with raw nuts, but definitely plan on trying it in the near future! I will let you know when I do. :) I was going to say keep it in the processor longer, but it sounds like you had it in there for a pretty long time!

    What a cool restaurant!

  8. 8 elise says:

oooohhhh..nice new layout! i recently looked into getting an HRM, but in the end, couldnt justify the $. im curious to read what other peeps think of theirs though. ill admit, it would be quite nice to know exactly how far i ran while completely lost in central park (it happens every time).

  9. 9 coco says:

great yoga sessions! I’d recommend you 20 min core yoga if you want something challenging.
I have a F6 for woman and I like it!

  10. 10 Erica says:

Cool restaurant! I love places like this that understand the importance of health and eating well! Hope you guys have a good day.

  11. 11 Lesley says:

That restaurant looks like a GREAT place to eat … I want to find one! Your salad looks so good, too!

  12. Heather, thanks for the shout-out. Anytime I use raw nuts for nut butters, I’ve had to add oil. I usually use coconut oil because I love the taste, but almond oil adds a nice flavor as well.

I have a Polar, but I don’t know much about them. Have you looked at the Polar Website? I bet you could find the info. you’re looking for there.

Your salad bowl looks good…I don’t think I could have resisted the mashed sweet potatoes either. :)

  13. 13 Erin says:

I had to add oil to my raw nuts to get it nut butter like, so I’m not sure. Cashews sound delicious though!

  14. 14 VeggieGirl says:

    Looks good!! Looove nut-butter.

  15. I wish we had a restaurant like that around here!!

I have never made my own nut butters but seeing them in blogland really tempts me to try!

  16. 16 Holly says:

I love the picture of you two! :-)

I don’t have a heart rate monitor but want one SO BADLY! I’ve heard a lot of good things about Garmin Forerunners, but I’m anxious to hear more about Polars, too. I really think having one would help motivate me to run faster!

  17. Late to the game – but great new layout! Your pic on the side is cute!

  18. 18 Emily says:

Good job finding something out that is raw. I just dont know if I could have done it. It is sooo hard to eat out when you are trying to eat healthy.

I love the new layout, BTW.

  19. 19 Victoria says:

I always want to make my own nut butters, but I have no food pro, and I’m pretty sure my blender wouldn’t be able to handle such a task. :(

  20. I love my little HRM with all of my heart. :D And I have the F6! However I think you’ll be fine. It’s just measuring your HR and you plug in all the info so it should work for either gender. :D

  21. 21 Dori says:

I LOVE Energy Kitchen, they have them all over the city, including right near work and my apartment! I love their egg white breakfast wraps.

So there is a womens F6 and a mens. They are different but I am not sure in what way! I do recommend the F7 though — the chest strap is a much more comfortable material. Good luck!

  22. 22 Krista says:

I have a Polar F4 and love it!

That restaurant sounds very neat!!! :)

  23. 23 K says:

What a fabulous restaurant!! Nice job on the raw cashew butter, too :)

I love the picture of you and Marky Mark on the side – you two are cute!!

  24. 24 rhodeygirl says:

that’s the one I have! I love it! I am not sure if it is unisex, but regardless check the STRAP SIZE! At first I mistakenly got the boy’s size and it was HUGE, I had to switch for a woman’s small (and I am not that small!) So basically, try and get the smallest strap they offer!

  25. i’ve never seen an energy kitchen, but it sounds good!

my hrm is the polar f6 for women … though i’m pretty sure the non-women one is still unisex. just not as pretty :-) . i found mine new and pretty cheap with a google search. it’s surprisingly comfortable and also easy to navigate! (i get overwhelmed with things that have too many functions). and it motivates me to change up my workouts when things start to get too routine.

  26. 26 RuntoFinish says:

It’s hard for me to do yoga with david around…I feel weird for some reason when i see him walking in and out of the room.

i sure wish KC had more healthy places to eat, but we are BBQ and fast food city

  27. 27 lauren says:

the raw cashew butter looks cool – like a paste. i should try that soon!

  28. 28 Kelly says:

That sounds like a really interesting restaurant. I’m not sure how you could make the raw butter more creamy. If you weren’t going raw I would suggest adding a little oil although I am pretty sure most oils are not raw. Maybe a cold pressed olive oil would be considered raw? Not sure.

Your eBay bidding war also cracks me up. I love eBay. There is something so fun about winning something as opposed to just buying it.

  29. 29 brandi says:

I don’t have an HRM, but I want one!

    i love cashews :)

  30. 30 Danielle says:

I’m investigating heart rate monitors as well, I really want one. Keep us posted on what you wind up getting.

  31. 31 Amy S. says:

lol can I just say that when I was reading your blog yesterday, my younger sister looked over my shoulder and was like “Hangry Pants?” So all day whenever we got hungry, we’d say “hangry” instead of “hungry.” It was quite humorous!

  32. 32 Lacey says:

i LOVE the recent posts separated out by she says/he says. it’s such a great organization short-cut tool. i would love to do something like the pages you have, too– an about me, running, my schedule/races etc… i don’t think blogger has that option though. i will work on that, however, because i would like it for organization + depth purposes :) if you have any suggestions i would love to hear them!!!!! i might need to create links or something. i have talked a little bit here and there about my running, but it has only been in the making for 3ish years and i don’t think i have a particular post devoted to it :) great idea!!!!! i love the back-story/about pages on everyone else’s blogs so i should def have my own. i love that the kids in school watch madagascar 2 :) what class category does that fall under??? :) hehe.

  33. 33 Heather says:

    Lacey,

We watched it in the afterschool program! Friday is movie day.

I don’t think blogger let’s you create pages, so you might have to do links. You definitely should though because you have a lot of great experience and running knowledge you can share. Maybe you could switch to wordpress?

    Heather

  34. 34 bobbi says:

love love LOVE the new layout, and what did you think of level 2???

  35. 35 Lora says:

i have a Pink Polar F6 and love it. very user friendly!

  36. Layout looks great!

I have tried Energy Kitchen once before – in fact, they will let you place an order online and schedule the delivery time you want to receive it, which is handy when I’m in the office. If you create an account they will send you coupons – I have one for $2 off right now, so I will be ordering sometime soon! Their menu doesn’t rock my socks off, but it’s healthy and reliable and that’s definitely worth something. The protein brownie was kinda tasty too. :)

  37. 37 Sara says:

Oh I have an energy kitchen a block away and I have been meaning to try it! I’m so lazy. geeez. You’ve inspired me however. Order in this weekend, perhaps…

  38. 38 Mariposa says:

i love the new layout! its fantastic.. you might want to check out http://www.godairyfree.org to see if there is any nut butter recipes on there.. Alisa has alot nut butter recipes in her new book- but there might be some on the website too :)

  39. 39 Tanya says:

I’ll add to the I’m so late but I luv the new layout especially the colors and cute header too. I have no experience with heart rate monitors – wish I could help.

  40. 41 Lindsay says:

i did the same thing w/ attempting pecan butter, but when i roasted them it came out MUCH better, i guess b/c the roasting makes them a little softer… i’ve read that adding a little OO helps too but mine have come out ok without adding in the oil… good luck!

by the way i have a polar f4 and LOVE IT.

  41. 42 Rose says:

I believe I have the F6, but I’d need to check… I’m pretty sure mine is for a woman, so maybe I have a different one.

I am LOVING the new HP layout.

  42. I make cashew butter all the time, but mainly for cooking applications. It isn’t as fatty as other nuts, so best to combine it with a little more fat for the best consistency. Mixing it with macadamias or just a wee bit of pine nuts will help make that happen if you don’t want to use straight up oil.

  43. [...] week I made raw cashew butter, but it turned out a little chunky and more like a thick paste, which was good, but not what I [...]

  44. [...] also made some homemade almond butter. I’ve tried a couple different times with raw cashew and almonds, but now that the Raw Challenge is over (more on that in an upcoming post), I roasted [...]
