Cookie Breakfast!
After my first taste of the City Girl Country Girl Oatmeal Raisin Cookies (discussed here) I knew I was incorporating cookies in my breakfast. They are healthy enough to do that.
My notes on the BackCountry Cookie:
- They remind me a little of the Kashi Pumpkin Spice Flax Bars.
- Crispy, crumbly and perfect for crumbling in with yogurt like granola or trail mix.
- Lots of seeds
- One cookie has 130 Cals, 8 g fat, 2 g fiber and 3 g sugar
- Ingredients: Natural Rolled Oats, Maple Syrup, Organic Whole Wheat Oat Flour, Organic Canola Oil, Pumpkin Seeds, Sunflower Seed Kernels, Flax Seeds, Pure Vanilla Extract, Sea Salt and Cinnamon.
I added my BackCountry Cookie to plain yogurt, banana, Pecan Butter and flax and that is certainly a delicious and fun way to start the day!
Moving on. I have a pain in my ….
I don’t know why I have not mentioned this before, but this is the story. Whenever I really push myself during a run (i.e. a Tempo Run) or run 8 or more miles on a treadmill I get a pain down the back of my leg where I am showing you in the picture. Here are the details.
- It is a burning pain that radiates down my leg where I am pointing. It starts in my bum.
- It is not the same as muscle soreness.
- Walking and running do not give me pain.
- Standing does not really give pain.
- Sitting the day of running is quite painful.
- Rag doll or anything where I bend over provides a sweet stretch and I wish I could do it all day.
- It’s only when I treadmill run (my long run outside Sunday caused no pain – this was brought on yesterday).
- Sometimes it happens on both legs, but this time it is just one.
- It is worse the day of the run and much less the day after.
My thoughts are that this could be sciatica, a pain in my sciatic nerve, but the pain does not radiate past my knee and it does not hurt to run or walk, only to sit after. I read that sciatica is a symptom of something else, so even if that is it, the inquiry is not over.

My other thought is that the way I run on a treadmill aggravates my quadriceps when I run hard or far.
The thing is, while it hurts a fair amount the day of the run, it never hurts significantly the next day so it doesn’t interfere with my running life. For example, yesterday after my hard Tempo run, the pain acted up and today it is virtually gone!
Does anyone else have this pain? If you have other thoughts on what it could be, let me know!

That totally sounds like sciatica to me. In my experience, the pain doesn’t have to extend all the way down the leg for it to be sciatica. I’ve had it only in my butt before.
I had major sciatica problems about a year ago. The pain was excruciating to say the least! It ended being a combo of my hips being off kilter and loose muscles. I did 6 weeks of intense physio before I felt better. I could barley walk and there really was no comfortable position to be in. I hope you aren’t having issues with that!!
Hope the pain eases up soon! I have taken the Summit survey, so I really hope it happens! (Praying for New York!
) SO exciting.
Cookies for breakfast sound delightful. I’ve actually been wanting cookies for breakfast in a weird way lately.
I hope you figure out the pain and get it taken care of. I haven’t had that issue before. Mine all seem to be in my pathetic feet that don’t know how to work properly.
i hope it gets better soon! I haven’t had a pain like you’re describing, so I’m not sure what it is.
cookies for breakfast is always a good thing
Oh no… hope you start feeling better soon!
How many times do I have to tell you?! It’s sciatica! I’m the smrtest person you know!
Yikes!! Feel better, Heather!!
Hope ya feel better soon!
I have a Whole Foods opening up near me (well, 20 minutes away) over the summer and can’t wait to get all these delicious items!
Can’t help you with the leg pain – is your treadmill on an incline?? Ibuprofin is my best friend when I am sore.
Definitely sounds like something with the sciatic nerve… my dad went to an acupuncturist for his sciatic nerve pain and it worked wonders!
I have no idea where this pain comes from, but what about doing some yoga for runners?! hope you feel better soon!
UGH! I don’t have that pain – but doesn’t it suck the further distance we go, the more pain we run into?! feel better!
Sorry, I’m not sure what your pain could be
I investigated a little bit on one of my favorite websites and found this though: http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/sma/sma_gluteal_sma.htm
Here’s the rest of the index if you want to look around: http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/sma/sma_index.htm#
I have gotten that pain the day after a long run – strange. But it only happened once. Just felt like something tight at the connector part of my thigh and bottom. Very weird feeling.
Have you tried Polly’s Yoga For Runners? That might help.
i thought you were going to say pain in the ass.. lol i have NO ideas what it could be but i hope it gets better soon!!! : (
sorry to hear about your pain! Can’t wait for more info on the Summit!
have a great day
Sounds like sciatica butt (heheh) if it is, you are lucky it goes away!
Cookies for breakfast? Yum!
Hope you figure out the mystery pain!
that brekkie sounds awesome. and excited for more summit info! all i can tell from your description is that it doesn’t sound like muscle soreness… check with a doctor :-/
i get this pain too! sometimes going to the chiropractor and/or taking an anti-inflammatory helps. it gets worse when i fly. i had an mri and it’s definitely not sciatica or a disc problem. so weird.
That sounds painful – I would get it checked out for sure. I’m excited about the blogger summit!
I actually did my first tempo “ever” yesterday and I was having this pain in my left thigh. I am doing another tempo tomorrow so I shall see if it gets worse.
I have to agree w/Mark. That was my first thought too. Symptoms sound typical.
I agree with the sciatica people, it sounds like that. I get an awful pain only when I run outside on the outside side of my right thigh.
Pains suck when you’re just trying to do something good for yourself.
NY! NY! NY!
Hmmm. The words “burning sensation” do make me think it’s a nerve thing – only because I had a pinched nerve in my hip, and that’s exactly how I would describe the pain. My pain was also the worst when I was sitting. My doctor put me on Lyrica and it has made 95% of the pain go away.
It’s good you don’t have pain when running. I’ll never forget one sports medicine doc said it’s okay to run if you don’t have pain WHEN you are running. Sounds obvious, but not so for the worry wart such as myself.
Whatever it is, I hope it goes away – fast!
Sorry about the pain
Not sure what it could be, but I used to use the “What Hurts?” feature on Runners World.com to self-diagnose ALL the time (under “Injury Prevention”). Have you tried that?
Feel better soon!
I’ve had pain in that area before, but it was my hamstring muscle, and it was due over-training. It hurt to run, but not to walk or do anything else. Basically it was SUPER tight, and it bothered me for about 6 months – never got worse, but didn’t get better. I noticed that my quads (the opposite muscle) were stronger than my hamstring. Now I make sure to work opposing muscles when I lift.
This probably doesn’t help your cause, but just thought I’d share.
Heather,
It sounds like piriformis syndrome, which aggravates your sciatic nerve. I only know this because it has happened to me in the past. I found relief by losing my piriformis using a foam roller and or a tennis ball. Before I Run I roll those areas ( mainly the booty) over the foam roller and/or the tennis ball, then i perform a set of stretches to help me work that muscle and keep it from tightening up. There are a lot of information only about it! Hope it gets better soon!
It does sound like sciatica from the description. But I’m no doctor so don’t listen to me ;D
Those cookies look delish!! I’m craving some right now! off to go eat…
I have that pain and it’s certainly not from running!!!
It sounds like sciatica to me .
Well I’m stumped on that running pain! I’ve had pain that starts in my glute (makes it feel tight) and then creeps down the hamstring. I believe it’s caused by a quad strain.
But hey, it doesn’t interfere with your running and you can just run outside. I would get it checked out if it gets worse.
ohh…i’ve never had that pain personally but many of my running buddies have ! I hope it gets better soon!
Ouch, hope you figure it out.
I want a cookie.
Ohmigosh! Sciatica, yuck. I had serious sciatic nerve problems last year. I believe mine was caused mostly by stress… but I know that tight hips and a weak lower back contributed. I started doing yoga once a week and healed myself. I know you’re training for a half, so I’m sure the additional mileage is the hip culprit. I would start stretching a lot more (yoga if you can) and doing hip and lower back strength work. Just be patient. The one thing about sciatic nerve issues is that unlike other running injuries, it really isn’t hurting you to continue to run/be active… it’s just uncomfortable. So if you are diligent with the stretching and strengthening, it should work. I’ve been pretty much pain free for about 6 mo, but mine comes back every now and again when I neglect my poor hips. (Like last night… boo. I’m training for a half too! But today I’m pain free). Wow, that’s a novel. Hope it helps!
Hmmm I have never experienced that but it does not sound fun! Hope you get it figured out!
Those cookies look so good!
Heather – I’ve had this pain off and on for the past 4-5 years. Be careful. Last summer it escalated to the point where I could barely walk. I couldn’t run for a few months. I am hoping to be able to go back to long distance running, but I think that I will have to stop if the “hip” pain returns. I can’t let it escalate again.
We weren’t able to exactly pinpoint the problem. But a physical therapist suggested that the problem may be due to a weak core. She recommended pilates.
I have never expereinced pain like that, but then again I am not really a “runner” – I hope you get to the bottom of that though! anything that gets in the way of exercise is so frustrating!
Sounds like sciatica! My mom has bad sciatica and hers never radiates past her knee. It’s mostly aggravated by walking long distances or being on her feet for a long time. I’ve had a few pangs of it before and it’s no fun. Take care of yourself!

funny that you should write a post about this just now! last week i was running on the treadmill at my school gym and just as i hit mile 5, the same exact thing happened to me. my guess is either sciatica or a quad cramp. after it happened to me, i stretched out my quads and stopped running for the day and i did some research. either of those options are valid, but it could be that you’re running on a banked (slightly slanted) surface when you run outside, meaning you have a short leg and a long leg, and one gets more pressure than the other.
a chiropractor can work wonders for all runner’s back ailments, and it’s been a while since i’ve seen mine, so that could very well be the issue. but as for making it go away, icing it the day that it happens and stretching really thoroughly helps, as does making a point to run on even surfaces outside and to deliberately put equal pressure on each legs.
i hope this helped!
