She Says: Let Me In!
That’s what I was thinking when I was locked out of my apartment after my awesome 6 mile run tonight!!!! But more on that in a moment.
On Sunday after I had a mediocre at best run, I was complaining to Mark and he said, “It’s like when I play Street Fighter, sometimes I win and sometimes I lose.” Well, I think “I won” today! After work I went to the gym to run the 6 miles on my training schedule. I was dreading the whole thing because I was tired and it was hot. When I got there, I found that my iPod was dead and I headed home to charge it. While charging, I prepped my dinner. About a half hour later I went back to run, but this time I decided to seize the opportunity of the new cool breeze and run outside instead of in the stuffy, stinky gym. I took my iPod thinking it would last the whole time, but alas, it only made it 20 minutes. I did something I have never done before, run with absolutely no external entertainment. Music is very important to my running. Early in a run I can tell if I am going to get in my grove depending on whether my music annoys me or pumps me up. For the first time, I listened when I ran and got lost in my thoughts. I learned I wheeze A LOT!!!! I would tell you to try running with no iPod but if someone told me that, I would have said NO WAY; so if you dare, give it a whirl.
Running Stats
- Miles: 6.167
- Time: 51:44
- Av HR: 157
- Max HR: 170
- Cals: 396
The whole time I was running I ignored the feeling that I’d locked myself out and assured myself that Mark would be home. Sure enough, I was locked out and although Mark’s car was there, he did not answer my constant doorbell ringing. I walked over to a parked police car (how safe of me) and asked to use his phone. He offered to send the fire department, but I thought it better to try a few less dramatic tactics first. I am embarrassed to say this, but in the world of cell phones, I don’t know Mark’s phone number!!! I called his parents instead, who called Mark and eventually returned from the Town Council Meeting to let me in. I guess this is the risk of running outside.
Needless to say, I was pretty hungry when I finally got upstairs. Good thing I already assembled my dinner: Spinach Stuffed Peppers and Salad.
Last night when I did my spinach juicing, I decided to save the “excess spinach” that comes out of the end of my juicer and use it for dinner tonight.
- 2 Cups Chopped Spinach (plus 1/4 cup spinach mash – I guess you could just add more chopped spinach)
- 6 Cherry Tomatoes Quartered
- 1/2 C Part Skim Ricotta Cheese
- Garlic Powder
- Pepper
I baked this at 350* for about 10 minutes (I wanted the pepper to retain some crunch) and topped it with Mezzetta Nappa Valley Bistro All Natural Homemade Style Mariana. Totally delicious! I love all the components of this dinner, so it’s not surprising that I gobbled it all up. Best of all, it’s fast and easy to make – perfect for hangry people.
On the side I had a salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots and kidney beans.
I also wanted to show you my two shameful and one not sooooo shameful snack from today.
And my dessert… Pita and Pecan Butter
It Worked!
Marianne made my Cadbury Mini Egg Cookie Bars!!!! She substituted wheat flour for the spelt flour and is thinking of making them with brown sugar next time. I say go for it!!!! Check out her experience with a Hangry Pants recipe, and feel free to send me your own Hangry Pants success or failure story!
And I am wondering …
Given my locked out situation today, I need to know: what do you do with your stuff when you run?

I got locked out of my house a while ago too. Luckily, my neighbors let me hang out until both of my roommates came back from class.
Nice job on the run!

I always take a key with me that I tie to my shoe or put in my little “key pocket” on my shorts, if I’m wearing shorts. Can’t get locked out with a key!

Despite my poorly endowed chest, I layer two sports bras and stick everything in between the two of them (keys, iPod, I’ve even put my cell phone in there – in a ziploc bag). Sort of weird, but it works for me…

Did Pepsi get a new look? Those look like some fancy cans o’ cola.
I don’t run, but when I go for a walk I put my cell phone in one pocket of my zip up jacket, and my keys in the other. I should probably put some ID in there as well, but I’m usually too lazy to pull it out of my wallet.
I know my friend used to put her house key in her shoe when she ran, so it was underneath her foot. Seemed to work for her.

I take my apt. key and string it in my shoelaces!
April 28th, 2009 at 9:06 pm
I splurged ( a whole 20 bones) and got a wrist road ID for my birthday. The black clasp on there is the perfect place to put your key ring (I take my house key off my huge gaudy key chain of course)

Lol – I had the same – forgot my iPod situation yesterday (blogged here and it helped me focus too. Only thing though I can run outside with no music – no problem I enjoy looking at the scenery. On the treadmill though I get bored quick!
I use something like the Nike shoe kit – it’s a little pouch with a strip you can loop under your shoe laces and velcro’s shut.

Being locked out is the worst! Glad you were able to get back in. I hate to admit it, but I don’t know anyones phone number anymore either.
April 28th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
What a night! I am haunted constantly by the thought of being locked out, or losing my keys and cell phone (yes, at the both time, of course) and not knowing anyone’s number. Nightmare! You made it though.
Great run! I hate listening to myself pant, wheeze, gasp for air, but sometimes I don’t want to hassle with an ipod.
If I run and need to keep stuff with me…I stuff it in my sports bra, right up front where I can feel it and notice if it falls out. Not the most comfortable, but I feel safer that way.
April 28th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
I sure like that you are honest about your snacks
April 28th, 2009 at 9:23 pm
I totally don’t know my bf’s cell phone number either. :-/

Hey there! I’ve been running since middle school and learned this from a teammate in high school: take your key(s) off the ring (if you have one) and simply tie them into your shoe laces! I like to take the top lace out of the first eyelet, then put the key on, then put the lace back through the eyelet, then double knot the lace. It works like a miracle. You could do one key on each shoe (car and house). I always run with my cell phone too. I simply turn it off and then attach it to my hip (it folds right over the top of your shorts/pants and won’t fall off). Voila! No money needed! Hope this helps.

That recipe looks great. I glad you had a great run!
April 28th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
I hate being locked out, worst feeling! Your dinner looks so good, I love peppers & spinach together.
April 28th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
your dinner looks phenomenal! so sorry you got locked out – maybe try a shoe “wallet”
April 28th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
i’m not a runner, but i never know what to do with my locker key when i’m at the gym pool!
April 28th, 2009 at 10:58 pm
I LOVE diet wild cherry pepsi!!! I hateee being locked out, it’s the worst! I used to put my keys in the little pocket that the Nike running shorts have, but then I lost a key and that was really bad news.
Another thing I do is I’ll tie the key into my shoelaces, so slip the key in, then tie your shoes as usual (and double knot them). <– the key definitely won’t fall out there! My friends also put it in their sports bra but I’ve never tried that before…
April 28th, 2009 at 11:39 pm
most of my skirts have pockets, as does my hat and my gracie gear sports bra:) Dont be embaressed about not knowing Marks cell number after the Boston marathon I didnt have a phone so I barrowed someones and only knew my moms number not even my own HUSBANDS!!!! LOL…
April 29th, 2009 at 12:03 am
I tie one house key in my laces or I also have a shoe pocket.
April 29th, 2009 at 1:40 am
I stick my stuff in the cupholder on my treadmill.
Did you know that they make MIXED UP Goldfish that are a combo of extra cheese and pretzel goldfish? I call them Heather and Mark. I love them.
April 29th, 2009 at 2:25 am
When I go running I only bring a few things, the most neccessary – my cell phone and my keys. I have a good running jacket that has a small tight inner pocket where I tuck in my keys and I put my cell phone in a practical little holder I strap around my arm.
April 29th, 2009 at 5:01 am
oh…getting locked out is not fun! Once I locked me out and had to wait 3 hours sitting in a bench alone!!! Not fun!!!
April 29th, 2009 at 5:05 am
i never take anything w/ me when i run, except for id. that’s it. if i’m not at home and have stuff, it’s in my trunk, or locked glove compartment.
April 29th, 2009 at 5:31 am
I just started running with a camelbak, which has a little pocket. I stuff my keys, cell phone and debit card in there. I run in the woods so I feel like I need my phone in case something jumps out of the trees. And I just always feel more comfortable when I have emergency money on me
I’ve been running without an iPod for months now. It is SO boring. I can only think about what to make for dinner for so long…
April 29th, 2009 at 6:34 am
I’ve recently taken the plunge with running without my iPod too, and I think I actually run better! It’s great if you have a running buddy because talking makes it go by so much quicker!
April 29th, 2009 at 6:35 am
get running pants with handy little zipper pockets – a wise investment. check out steepandcheap.com or sierra trading company for good deals
April 29th, 2009 at 7:38 am
I tie my house key through my shoelaces.
April 29th, 2009 at 7:40 am
ruh roh! i have an extra set of keys that I bring with me and put it in the little holder that all of my running bottoms have. and i love running w/o my ipod
ah, nature!
April 29th, 2009 at 7:49 am
gym: stuff in the holder of the treadmill
Outside Lake: tie my key to my shoe – house keys locked inside car- water bottle under car ( sometimes I hide it on the trail but then I usually forget where I put it). Ipod clicked on to me.
Outside Neighborhood w/ Jack Dog: I tie poo bags to his leash, I put key to the house in my pocket or on my shoe- I wear a “fanny pack”- I got it for my South Africa trip- its actually flat and skin colored and meant to be worn under clothes to hide passports/etc. so it is always on you. I put my cell in there a/o key- I don’t know why I feel the need to bring my cell on neighborhood runs other than one time I went for a walk and this random dog started chasing Jack and me. I called Jeff ( at 7 am) and he drove up to get us because I freaked out. Ever since then I always feel the need to have my cell.
April 29th, 2009 at 7:57 am
I just started running without my mp3 player, too, because it was dead one day! Now I just forget to charge it
I didn’t think I could run without one, but it’s actually nice to just run and work through my thoughts and be able to hear what’s going on with my breathing, etc.
I LOVE cherry diet pepsi. and now I want one.
April 29th, 2009 at 8:04 am
Ready for my not so safe advice, I don’t lock my door. My door is around the back of the house and up 3 flights of stairs. Nobody really even knows there’s an entrance back there.
April 29th, 2009 at 8:15 am
great run! oooh i hate being locked out
when i leave from my house i leave 2 doors unlocked (and if a roomie is there i tell her i’m going and coming back just in case). if i drive + park somewhere i just carry my car key. i have locked my keys in my car before tho and it SUCKSSSS.
April 29th, 2009 at 8:15 am
Ugh, I hated getting locked out when I lived in an apartment!! The super used to charge $25 to get back in!
April 29th, 2009 at 8:22 am
Could you switch out your iPod for your iPhone on runs? That way you still get music but also have your phone with you.
April 29th, 2009 at 8:46 am
So sorry you got locked out! The world of cell phones is tough. Who can remember all those numbers anymore? I am the same way. I only remember Bill’s because I pay the phone bill and see it on there all the time.
This is completely unsanitary, but I keep my key in the side of my sports bra. Every so often I make sure it’s still there. When I get home, I disinfect the heck out of it.
April 29th, 2009 at 9:15 am
I always put my key in the little key pocket in my shorts! Bummer you got locked out. at least you made friends with some cops! never know when that might come in handy..like when you have your next raging party and the cops come to break it up and they’ll see it’s you and let it slide. Yup. just wait. it’ll happen.
April 29th, 2009 at 9:21 am
That is funny that you didn’t know Mark’s number, but it makes sense! I lock my house keys in the mailbox and just take the mail key. I have only run twice though.
April 29th, 2009 at 9:44 am
i’m so thrilled you found a use for the spinach mash
the only thing i take with me when i run is my key, and i tie it into my right shoe lace and tuck it under so that it doesn’t flop around.
(and your revised spinach smoothie looks so delicious and refreshing!)
April 29th, 2009 at 10:09 am
The key to my apartment slides into my IPOD case behind my ipod. I keep my gate key in my sports bra and mace in my pants (literally in my underwear.. I hope it doesn’t accidentally explode one day that would not be a good experience)
April 29th, 2009 at 11:32 am
Hahaha isn’t it terrible how no one knows anyones phone numbers anymore!!! I know like 4 total off the top of my head! Thank goodness for the nice police man
I kind of want to buy something I can strap around my waist or to my sports bra for things like a key, ID, and money for longer runs.
April 29th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
My stick my key and my license into my ipod case behind my ipod. The case is really ugly but it works very well for that !
April 29th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
Glad you kept running without the Ipod. I never use mine when I’m running and I’m rarely bored.
I don’t usually have “stuff” when I run, but if I have a key I tie it into my shoelaces. Unless I’m wearing my Race Ready shorts, which have pockets.
April 29th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
This weekend at the MORE Half Marathon expo they gave out these wrist bands that have a zipper so you can put lip balm, keys, etc in it while you run. I think i’ll be including that in my giveaway this week so stay tuned. Also, if you have a chance, hop on over to my site and share your favorite week night meal recipe!:)
