She Says: Strawberries Squared and Product Review

by Heather Friday, April 17, 2009

**Mark’s weekly post made it to Nate’s This Week in Blogs, Volume IV. It’s US Weekly for food blogs, so it’s kind of a big deal. I am going to ask Nate if he’d consider occasionally ghostwriting for Mark. **

I had strawberries at dinner and dessert today. Delicious. Actually, thinking back I had them with lunch, too so it’s actually strawberries cubed, but that doesn’t quite work as a title. Anyway, even though I thought my bigger than average lunch would keep me beyond full all day, about 4 hours later I was hungry.

I had some leftover soup that Mark brought home from his mom. I fulfilled Leng’s Salad Challenge with a Spinach and Strawberry Salad.

After dinner I went with Mark to his studio while he did work and I blogged. Nate, this is Mark at work receiving Whole Foods Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies from Jordana of Planet Verge. I had one and I liked it!

I supplemented my cookie with my packed from home dessert, which included more strawberries.

  • Better Whey of Life Peach Mango Yogurt
  • Cut up Banana
  • Cut up Strawberries

It looks like yogurt soup!

Now it’s time for my official Better Whey of Life Yogurt Review.

IMG_5509

  • About: Better Whey of Life yogurt is yogurt made with whey protein (a complete protein) giving it 15-17 grams of protein in each 6 oz cup. It comes in five flavors and I tried three flavors – Plain, French Vanilla, Acai Mixed Berry, Peach Mango and Strawberry Banana.

  • Taste: My first experience was with the French Vanilla. You can read more about that flavor experience here. Next I tried the Acai Mixed Berry and finally, the Peach Mango. My favorite, much to my surprise, was Peach Mango. But I am going to go out on a limb and say they all tasted very similar. There was not a strong flavor coming from any of them. They are a tiny bit sweet, but have more of a tang than anything else. And it’s not like a plain Greek Yogurt tang either. It’s more of a sour tang. The flavor in each is very subtle. I only appreciated this when I got to the third flavor and knew what to expect. Overall, I predict that my favorite, if given the opportunity, would be the plain.

  • Texture: Thin and creamy. Smooth. Pictured below is the Mixed Berry Acai thickened with ground flax. Worked like a charm. These are not “fruit on the bottom” yogurts. They do not need to be stirred, but rather, shaking is the preferred preparation method. Of note is that there are no peach or mango pieces in the Peach Mango and exactly one blueberry in the Acai Mixed Berry. This was great for someone like me who cannot take slimy yogurt fruits.

  • Ingredients: Nothing funky, which to me, means no fake sugar substitutes. They are sweetened with natural cane sugar.
  • Nutrition: The 6 oz. plain contains 130 – 145 cals, .5 g fat, 7 – 14 g sugar and 15 – 17 g protein.

In conclusion, I will look for the Peach Mango and Plain at the Whole Foods near me. I am also curious about the Strawberry Banana and will try that one if the price is right. For me, the low sugar and protein are what sets this brand apart from others. As someone who does not eat meat, I am looking for protein in my yogurt and sometimes Greek Yogurt is too expensive to justify. If you’re interested, check out the store locator.

Thanks for the nice review of Better Whey of Life! It’s the whey protein and the lower sugar content that makes our yogurts less sweet. And it is the whey protein that is so great and unique about the yogurt. I, actually, developed the yogurt because I lost a skirt size when incorporating whey protein into my diet. So it works!

As for how we compare to real Greek Yogurts. Well, they can’t have any whey protein or fiber in them because they are strained and all that good stuff gets strained out. So, nutritionally, we have a superior nutrients that they can’t have.

Thank again for the review. Have a great weekend.
