She Says: 13 Miles – I did That!
I did it! 13 miles done! And now, not only do I feel 100% confident for the Brooklyn Half Marathon, but I also feel like I could go further. I guess my question to answer on another day is just how far do I want to/could I run?
To be honest, the run was a little hum drum. Nothing eventful happened. I just ran and listened to music. The weather was nice, not too hot, no rain, etc. I had 6 Sharkies – 3 at around mile 8, and the rest throughout the rest of the miles. No stomach issues, cramps, aches or pains. I guess I should be thankful that it was such an uninteresting run!

It was truly a milestone for me. As I’ve explained, I am not a runner by design. I have asthma and it doesn’t come easy to me, but it was something I always wanted to do. For years, even in high school, I admired people who could just “go for a run” and wished I could be the person I saw gliding down the street. And now, quite honestly because of other bloggers, I am that person and it’s wonderful. So, a little Monday afternoon thank you to all my blog friends who have ever written about running, YOU HELPED MAKE ME A RUNNER, THANK YOU! There are no runners in my life and all of you have filled that gap and given me the courage and motivation I needed. There are so many, too many to list, but I think you know who you are.
Ok, enough mushy stuff. After I got home I had fruit salad of apples, cantaloupe and watermelon.
I then stretched my legs, drank lots of water and had a Peanut Butter and Agave Sandwich on an English Muffin.
It was perfect, but I think I need some veggies at dinner!
Have a wonderful Monday!!!!

YAY! Congrats Heather. Awesome accomplishment.

Congrats on the run. Thanks to all the runners in this blogsphere, I ran my first 5k last year and hope to run it again. I seem to have knee problems though- how do you prevent them? Have you had any issues? I stopped running for a while to do pt, but am starting up again and would love your advice!

Congrats on the run!! So great!
May 11th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Congrats Heather on a great run! I’m also doing the Brooklyn Half Marathon! Until Friday, Bo and I were doing the NYRR Japan Run 4miler instead but Bo decided he wanted to see Coney Island and Brooklyn (haha). So, looks like I have to jump into 3 week training mode and get cracking! I know I can do it since I did the MORE Half 2 weeks ago but i’m still a bit nervous about the heat. I wish they’d change the start to 7am. What type of music do you listen to when you run?

May 11th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
Heather – congrats! What a feat! Great job! ::: insert a 15-minute tap dance ::: I’ve been blessed to have you as a runner friend
I don’t have any other runner friends in my life either (at least none nearby).. so it’s been great sharing my experience with you and others.
Oh, and another thing, you are going to kick the NYC half marathon’s ass.
May 11th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
i’ve been reading so many blogs lately and thinking of starting my own, but this is the first time i’ve commented on anyones blog!… but you really hit home there. what you wrote about always wanting to be a runner is how i have always (and still) felt, and everyone out there in the blogosphere has been such a great inspiration for me as well! i am “training” (kind of) to run a 5k, and hope one day to be in your shoes! congrats, and good luck!
May 11th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
dayyyyyum girl. you rocked it. :]
as if i ever thought you wouldnt.
May 11th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
Congratulations on the big run – you are definitely ready!!! I only went up to 12 before the half, you will feel so confident going into it! I am at the same place as you after completing a half-marathon. I know/would like to do more, but I am not sure if I’m ready to enter marathon territory yet. I think that 15-20 miles would be ideal. Let us know if you come up with anything!
May 11th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
Congrats on the big run!
May 11th, 2009 at 2:49 pm

May 11th, 2009 at 5:04 pm
YAY on the run!! I can’t run too much – bothers my feet and my knees. But good to see you doing so well with it.

May 11th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
Aaahhh!!! Congrats!!! I have no runners in my life either, so bloggers (like you!) totally inspire me. You’re going to rock that half marathon like nobody’s business.
May 11th, 2009 at 5:50 pm
Talia: Luckily, I have no knee issues. Knock on every piece of wood around!!!
Ashely: I am going to answer your music question in a post. Love my running music!
Cassie: Good luck with your training!
Amanda: I feel the same way! 26 miles still sounds like something that’s way too much for me, but I feel like 15-20 is doable.
May 11th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Congrats!
May 11th, 2009 at 6:39 pm
Congratulations on the run!! I agree about bloggers inspiring you to run – it’s why I started too! I have some knee issues and also feel jealous when people can just go for a run without worrying about it hurting, but having such a supportive community is great.
May 11th, 2009 at 7:07 pm

May 11th, 2009 at 7:27 pm

May 12th, 2009 at 4:26 am
Oh my gosh! Heather, that is awesome. One day I hope to run 13 miles…but not today! You are so going to kick that half’s ass!
May 12th, 2009 at 8:00 am
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You accomplished it and I think you did amazing! I am glad the sharkies aren’t bothering your stomach- it could be the lack of fiber and mostly glucose that upsets your normally regulated stomach ( used to fiber full meals)
I have asthma too!! Do you ever take your inhaler pre-run? Do you take it with you on outdoor runs?
May 12th, 2009 at 8:25 am
Holy crap! You’re amazing =]
May 12th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
Good for you! That’s a nice time for 13 miles too. You should feel confident.
I always have a pb sandwich on long run days.
