She Says: Almost, But Not Quite
I almost went the entire day yesterday consuming only one serving of peanut or pecan butter. Almost. But not quite.
After dinner last night, I headed out for a run based on my new modified training schedule. I totally zoned out and dreamed of the day when I have my own classroom, blogger summits and Lost. I also thought of Veggie Girl Caramel Banana Bread. The run was wonderful! It made me happy to be a runner! One day I will have to take pictures of the beautiful street I run down. It has giant trees and the leaves of each tree touch to form a tree tunnel.

When I got home, I pulled a slice of the Caramel Banana Bread (recipe here) out of the freezer and ate it calmly and rationally while watching Lost. That show is awesome and crazy and even when I have literally no idea what is going on, I love it. I used to try to figure things out, but now I’m just waiting until they spell it out for me – next year I presume.
Anyway, the bread was so delicious (even after being frozen and defrosted), that I went for another piece with … Pecan Butter. I took a quick phone picture in between bites. I didn’t have time to set it up and eat nicely when all I have is commercial breaks to get everything done!
Post Lost, Mark and I walked to the neighborhood Quick Chek so he could Do the Dew. It was Throwback Mountain Dew in a Throwback Bottle. I love Quick Chek, if for no other reason than the crazy products they carry. Last night I found Giant Cheetos. Basically, it’s five large cheez-balls lined up in a bag and available for purchase if you can scrounge up 59 cents. I must take more pictures in there.
Throwback Dew: CARBONATED WATER, SUGAR, CITRIC ACID, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, SODIUM BENZOATE (PRESERVES FRESHNESS), CAFFEINE, GUM ARABIC, BROMINATED VEGETABLE OIL, YELLOW 5
Modern Dew Ingredients: CARBONATED WATER, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, CONCENTRATED ORANGE JUICE, CITRIC ACID, NATURAL FLAVORS, SODIUM BENZOATE (PRESERVES FRESHNESS), CAFFEINE, SODIUM CITRATE, ERYTHORBIC ACID (PRESERVES FRESHNESS), GUM ARABIC, CALCIUM DISODIUM EDTA (TO PROTECT FLAVOR), BROMINATED VEGETABLE OIL, YELLOW 5
Mark thought Throwback Dew tasted like pure sugar on a wet fingertip. He also found it thinner than the Modern (is that the opposite of throwback) Dew.
QOTD: This morning I had the same oat breakfast I had every day this week. I absolutely MUST go to the supermarket today. It’s a non-negotiable. The only vegetable in my house is in a salsa jar! I am feeling a little adventurous. What one item MUST I pick up at the market today?

I am LOVING this throwback idea because I’m allergic to HFCS!! I can finally drink beverages with flavor!!!

Having a nice area to run in really does MAKE the experience. I enjoy running so much more now that I live in a very runner friendly/beautiful area. I HAVE to try that VeggieGirl recipe. My Grandma lives near a Quick Chek and I always stop there when I visit her. Hope you have a great Thursday.

Hmm… what must you get… Ingredients for ratatouille! I’m so obsessed with the stuff
May 14th, 2009 at 8:57 am
You caramel banana bread looks so good!! Now I want some giant cheetos!!!
May 14th, 2009 at 9:08 am
Well if you like plantains I suggest that
I baked one in the oven recently and it was so good!! Before I had only ever had them at restaurants.
May 14th, 2009 at 9:10 am
Amazing run stats! You ARE fast!
Caramel banana bread looks so good. I would love some!
Must have at grocery store: fresh green beans
May 14th, 2009 at 9:13 am
I feel you on “I love being a runner.” I have been really into yoga lately and running less. Yesterday I went on the best 6 mile run. Super sweaty just like I like it!
The one item you should buy (sticking with the old school theme) is popcorn. The kernels in a bag or jar. Pop it on the stove old school style…I use olive oil. Then I sprinkle with brown sugar, cinnamon and salt. It is my new after dinner obsession! I can’t get enough. A perfect snack / dessert!
May 14th, 2009 at 9:16 am
Great run! I love just thinking like that.
I am dying to know what’s happening with this blogger summit. I think everyone on the team has mentioned it on their blog recently… will we know more soon???
May 14th, 2009 at 9:17 am
must buy=cauliflower to make the green monster breakfast with oat/oatbran and cauliflower puree!
May 14th, 2009 at 9:23 am
Oh I LOVE tree tunnels! I hope to live on a street one day that has a tree tunnel.
Chayote squash! Yum. Good raw in salads, and also good cooked.
May 14th, 2009 at 9:24 am
My kids bring those giant cheetos to school everyday! I think they’re gross because the kids sit there and take bites out of them, instead of just tossing them in their mouths. Then you can just imagine what their hands look like after about 5 of those. Ugh.
I love streets with tree tunnels. How beautiful. I miss that. Can we WALK down a tree tunnel street when I get home?

Interesting… I know in a lot of other countries, Coke and other sodas are always made with sugar instead of HFCS. What IS it with the US and corn syrup?!
May 14th, 2009 at 9:38 am
I havent had Mountain Dew in ages! I know its not caffeinated here versus in the US though. I love runs where I can just zone out, they are so satisfying.
May 14th, 2009 at 9:38 am
Very interested on the throw back sodas I noticed those commercials as well and thoguht it was interesting because to Anna’s point, so many sodas are made with regular sugar in other countries. America’s love affair with HFCS comes from the fact that corn crops are subsidized making corn syrup much cheaper than it would be were the government not supporting it. That makes it much cheaper than sugar and hence it gets used a lot. Blech!

I’m really glad you posted this, because until now I thought that the whole Throwback thing was just a marketing ploy. I thought they just made retro labels and the product was the same. Wowwwwww I’m an idiot, haha. Now I must go try some. Damnit. No soda for months, but I can’t pass this up.
May 14th, 2009 at 9:46 am
So glad you had a good run
What IS up with the blogger summit? I’m mucho confused.
haha my roommate Sean got home yesterday and was so excited about this Mountain Dew business!
May 14th, 2009 at 9:53 am
You must buy kiwi’s!!!
May 14th, 2009 at 9:56 am
great job on the run! that bread still looks amazing.
I was wondering about all these “throwback” sodas and if they were any good. I do like that they’re making them without HFCS!
May 14th, 2009 at 10:57 am
I’d say “crack wrap” ingredients, but you said you weren’t a Sabra fan (gasp!). Maybe some light coconut milk to make a curry? Or some jicama to make some slaw or mango jicama salsa? Yum!
I was going to make a dirty comment about DOing the Dew, but I decided against it.
May 14th, 2009 at 11:04 am
Oh the bread looks divine! I have to check out that recipe. And I like the idea of freezing it. I’m also in love with Lost. I hate having to wait so long for the next season. Grrr!! I want to know what happens next!!!
May 14th, 2009 at 11:06 am
I want the next season of LOST to start next week! I love that show no matter how much it confuses me at times! Giant cheetos?! Haha – love the Dew comparison!
May 14th, 2009 at 11:11 am
cilantro and watermelon! soooo good on top of a huge bed of lettuce, shredded carrot, and sliced onions. yummy.
May 14th, 2009 at 11:18 am
I agree with Krista. Kiwi all the way! They are the perfectly little size for a bit of sugah before or after a run. I love kiwi!
and…. unsweetened coconut! It is sooo yummy in oatmeal.
you sound so positive and happy today. love it! i bet the tree tunnel is going to be gorgeous with snow on it this winter!
May 14th, 2009 at 11:57 am
i had a similar evening: lots of pumpkin bread with peanut butter. it’s just so good
if you’re feeling slightly adventurous, pick up some of my personal favorites: broccoli rabe, mesclun, leeks and raw artichokes. all are in season and not well represented in the blog world!
May 14th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
also, wanted to share this. Michael Pollan on the Colbert Report, where they discuss those giant cheetos. haha

I gotta say – KABOCHA!
May 14th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
I second jimica! I made jimica “rice” last night for dinner and it was fab! I can’t get enough of that stuff.
Or a coconut.
Or hemp or chia seeds.
Or a papaya.
God, I heart spring.
May 14th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Hmm, I think you must pick up something new to put in oatmeal! Something wacky you haven’t tried yet, perhaps a random vegetable? If nothing else, get blackberries – so cheap right now and pretty much worth their weight in nutritional benefits. I die for blackberries!
May 14th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
If you’re feeling really adventurous, I recommend celery root, which looks incredibly ugly, but makes a really delicious mashed potato-style puree.
May 14th, 2009 at 5:42 pm
So glad you had more than one serving of pecan nut butter – I was a little nervous there for a minute.
LOST was crazy. Jacob was so not what I thought he’d look like, and I totally freaked out when John’s body rolled out of that crate. Where is Claire?!? 2010? Torture!!!
Re. your trip to the store, buy some Trader Joe’s Veggie flax tortilla chips!
May 14th, 2009 at 8:22 pm
I’m glad your interview went well and I hope u get it!
May 14th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
i was going to suggest spinach, but seeing as you seriously need thing to dip in nutbutters more than anything else, id say carrots, and any other veggie/fruit that can be dipped or drenched in nutbutters!!!

That’s an interesting article. I just wondered if you could tell me where to find more info on this topic ?
