She Says: Full for Hours

Good morning! I hope the sun is shining where you are!

I received a call early this morning asking me to substitute in the first grade, so that is where I am today. There is a student teacher in the room, which means I am more like an aide to her. It might seem easy peasy, and it probably will be, but it also means the time passes by quite slowly. I prefer being hands on and busy when teaching – the time just flies by!

I knew I wanted something that would keep me full for a long time, so I went with oats of course! In today’s bowl is:

This was delicious and is sure to keep me full for 4+ hours! Oats is amazing that way.

Is there a breakfast better than a warm bowl of oats? I think not.

I packed my lunch and after school snack as well.

  • Salad with a ton of kidney beans, some tomatoes, corn on the cob and salsa dressing.
  • Orange

It looks pretty good, right?

For my after school/before After Care snack I packed an English Muffin and peanut butter. This is pretty substantial, so I am not sure I’ll eat the whole English Muffin. Don’t want to spoil dinner!

Simple Strength

On my revised schedule today is a strength and stretch day. Stretch is easy – some nice yoga will do the trick. Strength is something I totally skimp on. The only thing I’ve been able to stick to doing is various combinations of the 30 Minute Shred video. Other than that, I really am more of a yoga person at heart.

Do you strength train? What do you do?

See ya later alligator!

I love strength training – I do it more than cardio. Legs, I work 3x a week – with the usual suspects: leg press, extension, leg curl, squats & calf raises. Then I split upper body into back/biceps/shoulders on 1 day and chest & tri on another day.

  2. Kristin @ Iowa Girl Eats Says:

Mmmm loving that salad! I always forget about using salsa for dressing… I don’t (guilty face) strength train consistently. I call Shredding with Jillian my strength training!

  3. Mara @ What's For Dinner? Says:

Half of my Jazzercise classes are strength exercises, and I LOVE them! Have fun subbing first grade!

  4. Erica Says:

Lunch salad looks beatiful! I hope the day goes by quick for you ;) . I strength train via Body Pump. I get too distracted when I try to do it on my own and focus too much on certain parts and not enough on others!

  5. Jordan Says:

I can’t wait till it gets cold again so I can eat oatmeal. I just can’t stand it in the crazy Florida humidity, yucky.

  6. brandi Says:

i hope today goes by fast!

i was in love with my big bowl of oats this morning, too.

strength training right now is a bodypump class one time a week, but this week is our last one :( i might have to get on the shred train.

  7. Foodie (Fab and Delicious Food) Says:

Hope you have a great day!

  8. Victoria Says:

I strength train and I’ve actually grown to like it more and more. I try to do moves that focus on multiple muscle groups. Probably my two favorites are: squats for lower body and push-ups for upper body.

  9. Jess Says:

I have definitely been getting into the Shredding lately! But for the last 9 years I’ve been strength training, and I try to do at least 1 day of arms, legs and abs per week, just like 5 exercises with 3 sets of 12 reps. Nothing intense!!

  10. Nicole Says:

Mmmmm, the salad looks super tasty!

  11. Heather's Bestie Says:

Enjoy first grade! I tried some Flax Waffles today from Organics and loved them! Definitely worth the extra dough. Oh, got to go now, the bathroom is calling! ; )

  12. Natalie D Says:

mm, breakfast looks good! I don’t know how you do the younger kids! I’m a high school teacher. I totally know what you mean about being busy, the day does go slowly when you aren’t! good luck!

  13. Ashley Says:

Strength training is so important especially for runners! If you’re just getting started and want something you can do in your home i’d recommend Core Fusion DVD as it incorporates strength and yoga/pilates. I bought it on sale from Amazon.com and it comes with 2 free classes at the NYC studio!

  14. coco Says:

oh…. I’m seeing my favorite Tj’s english muffin there! :D
    strength training: yoga!
    have a nice day!

  15. Diana (Soap & Chocolate) Says:

How funny – your lunch salad looks like my lunch’s doppelganger! Well, you know what they say about great minds… :)

I find my strength training is built in because I like to use DVDs like Jillian Michaels’ and The Firm – I don’t consciously think to do it, but the reality is that there are weights involved several days per week. Definitely makes a big difference!

  16. Run Sarah Says:

Love your colorful salad! I rarely do strength training but would really like to start.

  17. Melissa @ For the Love of Health Says:

I love that you planned your entire day of eating while out! I do the same thing :-) It helps out big time as I am sure you know.
Salad looks colourful and perfect- Yum!

I skimp on strength too! I try very hard to incorporate it. I see a personal trainer once a week for an hour and she whoops my bum (although I seriously have to cancel this expensive luxury now that I am saving for law school) and then I try to take what she teaches me and do my own thing two other times a week. Generally it usually is one additional time a week but I figure two strength training sessions is far better than none! OH! and on Saturdays or Sundays I pulled out my Women’s Health Workout DVD with Amy Dixon! Great strength training!
I took up a boxing class about a month ago and haven’t been back in weeks because my schedule didn’t allow for it but I will go tomorrow! Need more strength! :-)
I think the key is to plan for it and follow through. I always have this lax attitude about it and say “I may do it” after my cardio and if I am too tired I just skip it. I resolve to not do this any longer and even scale back cardio if necessary!
Sorry for the long message haha

  18. Krista Says:

    Oats pretty much ROCK!

I really need to get better at doing some strength training. I tend to focus on cardio too much!

  19. Erin Says:

    Beauts salad.

I do lift weights (teeny ones) just to keep toned and firm.

  20. Lauren Says:

Yes, your salad looks pretty good – VERY good, actually! I love southwestern-style salads.

I’ve been kicking up the notch on my strength training regimen over the past few months in order to whip my arms into shape for my upcoming wedding. I think you read my post last night about Jillian’s No More Trouble Zones workout – man, my arms are pooped after that workout (I use 5 lbers). I alternate that On Demand workout with weight lifting sessions after cardio at the gym, using a variety of weight machines. I have really been able to see a difference in muscle definition!

  21. K Says:

Have fun today!! Your lunch/snack look fantastic!

I MUCH prefer strength training than doing cardio. I just like how much stronger I feel :)

  22. HeatherBakes Says:

    That’s a PRETTY lunch!

I don’t strength train as much as I should- my legs and butt are in okay shape from running, but the arms and abs are another story :( I have started that Jillian Michael’s Shred DVD. Lots of push ups.

Thanks for passing along your sis’s blog! I checked it out last night and will definitely keep reading…

  23. Biz Says:

The only strength training I do is from the Jillian videos – probably should add some more on my own though!

  24. FitFoodie Says:

I’m big into strength training! I just started a new DVD program called ChaLEAN Extreme…it has 3 days of heavy weights and 2 days of light weights mixed with cardio moves. I heard you get great results…so I can’t wait to see for myself :)

  25. Lara (Thinspired) Says:

I need to do more strength training! I started to do it more often in the past few weeks and it makes such a difference with running and general fitness. If you get a chance, I’d love to hear about the “routines” you come up with for your strength days!

  26. Quinn Says:

I try to take one Total Body Conditioning and one Strength Training Class per week at my gym – the other days I do some arms routines, squats and lunges on my own. I have also done Jillian’s Shred; however, what I am not very good at is the stretching – I really need to get into yoga.

  27. Melissa S. Says:

i strenght train…when i have the mental strength, because i hate it. haha

and i love your salad. so pretty!

  28. Jess Says:

I love strength training. I have details on a blog page if you need them.

I definitely think strength training helps running, but you don’t have to do tons of it. In the end, stretching is probably most important. It’s important to have a strong core for running, so you might want to concentrate on that, push-ups, and a few leg exercises to prevent injury at the least.

  29. janetha Says:

fiberific post! way to stay regular dudette. and full! i strength train every other day.

  30. Leah @ Simply Fabulous Says:

I love how oats keep you full for hours!

I do strength training now that I am in the midst of the 30 Day Shred. Otherwise I use to hate it!

I have noticed a huge difference in my running ability after doing tons of squats and lunges!!

  31. Anna Says:

I count my power yoga classes as strength training, but I should probably do more. I also do 8-10 mins of abs about 3 times per week.

  32. Becky Says:

I have the P90X DVD’s. It has arms, shoulders, legs, yoga, plyometrics and ‘ab ripper.’ I love it, they are hard but manageable, and I can see results just after a couple weeks. I feel like they complement running well.
You’re a trooper teaching the little tikes…I used to substitute teach as well and after my first kindergarten day I was DONE with the real young ones.
    Have a great week!

  33. Erin Says:

I love seeing what you bring to eat at school!
I thought of you and Mark all night as I eagerly awaited the premiere of RHW of the Jerz (translation: Real Housewives of New Jersey).
I love strength training. As you know! I do it in the weight room 3-4 days a week and at home with Jillian 1-3 days a week.

  34. She Says: If it Ain’t Broke | Hangry Pants Says:

[...] For breakfast this morning I had another delicious and powerFILL bowl of oats, which is almost an exact replica of yesterday’s. [...]
