She Says: Getting Lost in the Rain is One Way to Run Far

by Heather Monday, May 4, 2009

Good evening everyone! Did you have a nice Monday? Let me tell you about mine.

After my breakfast I sent out a few resumes for potential teacher jobs for the fall and then headed out. It was a little drizzly. The route I planned was 10.2 miles, but the route I took was closer to 11.5! I am not from around here, so sometimes the streets confuse me. I eventually realized I made a mistake, but then I had to wing-it for the rest of the run.

Running Stats

  • Miles: 11.4
  • Duration: 1:40
  • Av. HR: 165
  • Max HR: 183
  • Cals: 829

Pretty cool! The best part is that I knew I could keep going, which gives me great hope for my half. The second best part was my Sharkies. I’d been chatting with Meghann about how she knows when to eat something during a run and she explained that you won’t be hungry, but you will feel like you need an energy boost. I definitely felt that way 1 hour and 7 minutes in. My legs felt heavy and I was bummin, so I had 3 sharks. I felt like Mario after he gets flower power! I had 2 more sharks at 1 hour and 22 minutes. The Sharkies were tasty and easy to eat. The downside was (1) sugar granules on my hands; and (2) a cramp in my lower abdomen 5 minutes after eating them –what’s up with that? I still have 6 Sharkies for my next run.

Speaking of running, Rose and Aimee are awesome! The both completed the Pittsburg Half Marathon yesterday!!!!

When I got home, I drank a lot of water and had what I wanted for lunch. A bowl of yogurt and cereal with a scoop of Peanut Butter, a banana on the side, followed by an orange.  I also did two of Polly’s awesome quick yoga videos – Yoga for Runners and Yoga for Hips #1 – the best post-run stretch!!!

I probably just wanted water, but I was craving fruit for the rest of the day. I had a second banana at some point!

Before work I had another snack of Krinkle Sticks that I received from Lesser Evil. These taste a little like puffy potato chips. I think last time I had these I said they tasted like cheeseless cheese curls, and I think that sums it up.

After work I came directly home and started on dinner – PIZZA!

I used the Trader Joe’s wheat dough and made:

  • Half with Hummus and Egpglant (loved this!!!!)
  • Half with Mezzetta Nappa Valley Bistro All Natural Homemade Style Mariana, Eggplant, Ricotta and Tofu Cubes.

Eggplant, I love you.

I had it with a big salad to try to avoid eating the whole pizza. It kind of worked, but I did go back for a few nibbles.  I mean, who wouldn’t?

Now I am enjoying a lovely Pecan Butter Cinnamon Brownie!

Have a good night!!!!

P.S. Does anyone want to do a book exchange? I tried to take out Bethenny Frankel’s Naturally Thin and Mark Bittman’s Food Matters from my library, but no luck (yet they have Vegan and Raw books out the wazoo). If you’re interested in trading, let me know!

  1. After “getting lost in the rain” in your post title, I kept looking for Pina Coladas. Shoot. I guess brownies will do.

  2. 2 Marissa says:

I bet the hummus pizza was really good!

  3. I’ve always wanted to try a little suga boost in the middle of my run to see if it would help. I’m glad to see that the sharkies helped you go go go! And that eggplant looks bomb diggity!

  4. Hooray for getting job apps out!! That was such a stressful time in my teaching career (twice now) and it’s always a relief to get them done. I’d love some of those brownies!

  5. 5 Shelby says:

  6. 6 Meghann says:

I’m glad my advice helped! Sorry about the cramps though :( You can’t find the Shot Bloks around you?!?! I really like them because they literally melt in your mouth and aren’t heavy. Let me know if you want me to send you some!

  7. 7 K says:

Hah – I thought of the Jimmy Buffett song as well! Hummus pizza?! That sounds fantastic!!

  8. 8 Victoria says:

Glad your run felt good! I’ve always been hesitant to eat anything on my longer runs. Bummer about the cramps though.

  9. 9 Run Sarah says:

Awesome run! I think I should start bringing something like that along on my runs over an hour as I really feel like I’m running out of energy by the end of anything over eighty minutes or so.

  10. 10 Marianne says:

Great looking pizza, and good job on the run, even if you did get a little lost :)

  11. 11 Hannah says:

I love the idea of breakfast for lunch! YAY for having what you want!

THat special running store I mentioned has everything under the sun – I will gladly pick you up some shot blox or whatever else you might think you want! I can go tomorrow! Just let me know! :)

  15. 15 Erin says:

It’s very hard to not go back for 2nds on pizza. Although with that tofu one, I think I coulda resisted.

  20. 20 Julie says:

Nice run girl! Love that the sharkies helped you through it :)

  21. 21 Kristie says:

“I felt like Mario after he gets flower power!” Hahah I love that description. I don’t ever really run far enough to need mid run refuelling (yet?) but if I ever do I’ll be keeping sharkies in mind for it ;)

I would totally go back for many many nibbles of those pizzas. Hummus and eggplant? What a combo!

  22. 22 Rose says:

you are so sweet. thanks for your constant support!

  23. 23 ttfn300 says:

ooh, great run! mmm, eggplant :) and i couldn’t agree with you more about those lesser evil sticks!

  24. 24 Heather's Bestie says:

Love the pizza! My mom has Bethenny’s book, and I’m sure she would send it to you if you can’t find it. PS- I hate how she spells her name… quite WRONGLY! As a true Bethany, I wish I could change it for her!

  25. 25 Caroline says:

YUM! I need some eggplant now!

  26. 26 Runningwithin says:

Your pizza looks fab! And I think some of my best runs have been when I got lost, nothing makes you push yourself and go a bit faster like trying to figure out how the heck to get home!

  27. It’s funny to me that you ran so much farther than you planned! If I ever had to run an extra mile on my long runs, I would not be happy!

Your average heart rate seems high to me for such a long period of time. Maybe you just have a higher max HR, but on most long runs I try to stay around 145. If I’m much over this average for my long run, then I think I’m overdoing it a little bit and putting myself at risk for injury, considering the distance. I’m interested to know what your thinking is on this, since everyone has a different training philosophy.

  28. 28 Elina says:

Awesome job on that run! You are going to rock that half!!
Pizza with hummus and eggplant?! So creative – gotta try it :)

  29. 29 UVAJess says:

Congrats on your run!! I’m scared to run that many outside! Done it on the tready but I’m afraid I’ll get stuck somewhere!! Great job!!

My boyfriend and I finally started our “couple” blog I told you guys about! Please check it out!!

Note: we are in no means trying to compete with the FAB First Couple of Food Blogdom!! :-)

  30. 30 Holly says:

Congrats on the run – that is awesome! And props to doing it in the rain.

I have to second Meghann – shot blocks are amazing. Really gummy, but SUCH a good flavah. I also like the Sports Beans (aka Jelly Bellies).

  31. 31 Dori says:

That is so great about the run! I am envious that you can run for so long. I’m glad the sharkies helped with your energy. I would have the same cramping problem too. Not sure how to avoid that. The eggplant looks wonderful, that is one of the foods I miss the most. And of course, I want that brownie!

  32. 32 Sarah says:

I love sharkies! There is a package that doesn’t have the sugar granules on the outside… I think the ones you got may be for kids? However, that blue package you got is my favorite flavor.

  33. 33 Becky says:

Nice work on the run! Do you find that you get bored on long runs? I did a marathon last summer, and sometimes for runs 10+ I found it kinda boring by myself. Had to get the bf to ride the bike alongside me! Have you tried the running gels? I used those for long runs, they have some yummy flavors!
