She Says: Snacks All Around

by Heather Monday, May 11, 2009

The day turned out to be quite snacky. The thing about running longer distances (13 today – woohoo), for me at least, is that while I am hungrier, I can’t fit any more in my belly than usual. This means eating regular meals and a few extra snacks.

Snack Number 1 was a Mini Bag of Popcorn.  It was way too salty. I love popcorn, but really prefer it plain.  I also have a terrible habit of eating the unpopped kernels, which I enjoy on the way in; but give me such a stomach ache. Luckily, I remembered that this time and threw the kernels away.

After work I couldn’t make dinner fast enough. I had leftover soup from Friday night, but I added kidney beans for some extra fiber, leftover corn on the cob and sweet potatoes with cinnamon.

I would say this next thing was a snack, but it was really part of dinner – an Ezekial Tortilla w/ Pecan Butter. Just love everything about this.

And then, my final snack was delicious BackCountry Cookies. I actually froze this a week or so ago and pulled a couple out for dessert. I microwaved them for less than a minute and they were perfect. I really love all the City Girl Country Girl cookies!

And now, I’m done!

Music Question

Ashley left a comment asking what kind of music I listen to when I run. This is an important and fun topic!

I posted a list of some of the songs on my iPod here. Since then, I’ve gotten a few more great ones:

  • Jack Johnson – Upside Down
  • Soulja Boy – Kiss Me Through the Phone
  • Flo Rida – Right Round
  • Kid Cudi – Day ‘n’ Nite

To me, running music doesn’t necessarily have to be fast. The ability of a song to absorb me and help me ignore the desire to STOP or give me a little extra running attitude is sometimes just as important on a running playlist as one that pumps me up. Check out InTheGym.net for lots of good playlists and song ideas. Also, Melissa posts about music a lot and has a list of songs in her sidebar.

glad you’re refueling with such deliciousness…I agree about the popcorn though, it’s a once in a while thing for me, since I’m just not into the salty stuff very much.

I love your thoughts on music and running. You’re right, you don’t need to go fast as long as you can beat the urge to want to stop, you’ve conquered a huge obstacle RIGHT there. :)

Those cookies look so hearty and full of good stuff!!!

Thanks for the song ideas as well! I agree- songs that I run too are so important but don’t have to be fast- they just have to keep my mind off stopping!

i love how we get song ideas from each other– just another blog perk!!!! :) you did a great job of refueling today!!! i find if i ever need a substantial snack, eating something with a banana as part of it does wonders.

I’m usually hungier when I run longer distances, too!!

Pecan butter sounds quite delish and that cookie is a nice big one!!!

  20. 21 Holly says:

CONGRATS on your long run!!! That is awesome! And you are speedy, too. You will have no problems whatsoever in your half. I’m incredibly excited for you – not too much longer!!

I completely agree about running music not having to be fast. So of my favorite songs to run to are slower songs. For example, I love Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s “Over the Rainbow.” I just have to make sure I don’t listen to it when I’m sad! :-)

  21. I agree that music doesn’t have to be bang-you-over-the-head intense to be great to run to. Sometimes–especially in the middle of a run, for me–it’s really nice to vibe out with something more chilled out and zen-like. I can see Jack Johnson fitting nicely in that vibe. One of my favorite lower-key songs mid-run is Rufus Wainwright’s “Greek Song” or Nick Drake’s “Pink Moon”. Both great songs that really capture a mood.

I am, however, utterly convinced of the value of running to the beat–having an external stimulus that keeps your cadence regular. It’s what my company (http://www.hellasound.com) bases our whole running music concept on. Regardless of the mood you and the music are sharing (aggro, chilled-out, up-beat party, etc) syncing with the cadence of music that fits your stride rate is awesome. And it keeps you from slacking off if you start gassing out. Good stuff!
