I agree that music doesn't have to be bang-you-over-the-head intense to be great to run to. Sometimes--especially in the middle of a run, for me--it's really nice to vibe out with something more chilled out and zen-like. I can see Jack Johnson fitting nicely in that vibe. One of my favorite lower-key songs mid-run is Rufus Wainwright's "Greek Song" or Nick Drake's "Pink Moon". Both great songs that really capture a mood.

I am, however, utterly convinced of the value of running to the beat--having an external stimulus that keeps your cadence regular. It's what my company (http://www.hellasound.com) bases our whole running music concept on. Regardless of the mood you and the music are sharing (aggro, chilled-out, up-beat party, etc) syncing with the cadence of music that fits your stride rate is awesome. And it keeps you from slacking off if you start gassing out. Good stuff!

CONGRATS on your long run!!! That is awesome! And you are speedy, too. You will have no problems whatsoever in your half. I'm incredibly excited for you - not too much longer!!

I completely agree about running music not having to be fast. So of my favorite songs to run to are slower songs. For example, I love Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's "Over the Rainbow." I just have to make sure I don't listen to it when I'm sad! :-)

Thanks for the song ideas as well! I agree- songs that I run too are so important but don't have to be fast- they just have to keep my mind off stopping!
