She Says: Sweaty Beast

I got really sweaty at the gym today!

Do you sweat excessively like this, or is it just me?

Today was a scheduled Tempo Run and I followed this format, which I’ve done before.

  • Miles 1 & 2 – 6.7 mph (8.57 pace)
  • Mile 3 – 6.8 mph (8.49 pace)
  • Miles 4 – 6.9 mph (8.42 pace)
  • Miles 5 – 6 – 7.0 mph (8.34 pace)

HRM Stats:

  • Total Miles: 6
  • Total Time: 52:35
  • Av. HR: 156
  • Max HR: 171
  • Cals: 403

Calories Burned

Some people have commented on how few calories I burn when running. According to my Polar F4 HRM, for or an average 6 mile run I burn about 400 calories, sometimes less! I put my height, weight, age and sex into my HRM and  I consistently get the same results – I burn between 60 and 70 calories per mile. Yes, I know this is lower than average, but I am shorter than average, so it all works out. I use the calories burned number not as permission to eat more, but rather to help me pace myself and keep track of how far I am running outside. I can roughly  tell if I’ve run 3 or 5 miles depending on my calories burned.  That said because so many people asked me about it, I put my numbers into this Calorie Calculator from Runner’s World and I got 500 calories, about 100 more than my HRM indicates. My point is that nothing is exact, and for someone like me who is not trying to lose weight, I don’t think it matters all that much!

Lunch

I quickly threw together a platter of delights.

  • Sunshine Burger – Original. So delicious and filling.
  • Carrots, Tomatoes and Hummus – Roasted Red Pepper and Plain
  • A sweet treat.

Mmmm. Caramel Banana Bread from Veggie Girl.

For a PM snack I had what was left of my Greek Yogurt (about 1/3 Cup) with some Muesli.

Muesli is so versatile. It’s great overnight in yogurt, warmed up and as a substitute for granola, which is what I did here. Seriously, you get all the crunchy benefits of granola without all the sugar and fat! Try it!!!!

Have a nice afternoon! I hope the rain holds off  and the Mets game isn’t cancelled. Erica’s comment made me want soft serve!!!

I don’t burn many calories running either. It takes me about a half hour to burn 200, which for me is around 3.5 or so miles. I’m trying to lose a few pounds though, so it kind of discourages me!

I don’t burn many calories running either (I’m short too, only 5′). It takes me about a half hour to burn 200, which for me is around 3.5 or so miles. I’m trying to lose a few pounds though, so it kind of discourages me!

  3. Bridget Says:

First of all…I knew I could count on you to be a fellow “Jimmies” lover! haha!
I sometimes get frusterated wishing I was burning more calories, like I see some other people burn but obviously everyone is different and yeah if your not trying to loose weight then it really doesnt matter! Your running and staying healthy and thats all that matters :) I like sweaty workouts!

  4. Meghann Says:

Amen on your calories burned comment sista!! I don’t even pay attention to the amount either. It’s weird how people who run use that as an excuse to eat whatever they want or think they’re not burning enough. Its too many extremes. I just think its cool to see my garmin say I’ve burned 1700 calories after running 18 miles, but I never take the number seriously!

  5. brandi Says:

glad you had a good, sweaty run!

that bread makes me want to lick the screen.

  6. Marianne Says:

Hmmm, I thought I was sweaty when I’m at the gym, but definitely not that sweaty. Although, I always wear black, so it’s harder to tell.

As for how many calories you burn, well, it’s dependent on all those factors you put into your HRM, so I wouldn’t really worry if it’s low or high. Height & weight would be big factors, because the more of you there is to move, you automatically burn more calories.

  7. Run Sarah Says:

I sweat a lot at the gym, moreso when running outside! I’m not sure how many calories I burn as I don’t have a HRM.

  8. Danielle Says:

Wow that must have been a good sweaty run!
It’s raining here now but hopefully it holds off for the game for you tonight!

  9. weight and meditate Says:

That caramel bread looks wonderful. Where do you buy Sunshine burgers? I don’t think I’ve ever seen them where I live.

  10. Megan at From a Sesame Seed Says:

Go Mets! Are you going to the game???

  11. Mara @ What's For Dinner? Says:

Muesli is so great… I agree, it is great in SO many things!

  12. Dori Says:

If you’re burning less calories in a mile it probably just means you weigh less than whoever said that! I was wondering why my friend had a lower max HR and lower average HR yet burned so much more than me during 45 minuets of spin. My boyfriend (a cardiologist) explained that even weighing a few lbs more and less than someone else makes a huge difference in the # of cals burned.

I get sweaty like that too. I started easing out of the wife beaters and into actual workout clothes that absorb the sweat better.

  13. Erin Says:

I sweat a disgusting amount. I think it shocks people.
    I love those sunshine burgers.
And OMG that bread!! I can’t even see it in person and I think I may have drooled. I love love any banana bread and it looks so very moist and doughy.

  14. Holly Says:

I’ve noticed the lower calories, too, but never wanted to say anything because I didn’t want it to come out wrong. (I didn’t want to sound like a flower cutter…”oh – you only burn that many?!”) :-) But you had said you were short(er), so that completely makes sense. I’m glad you addressed this – it’s so true that that number really shouldn’t mean much if you’re trying to maintain and not lose!

I’m SO GLAD baseball season is here. Too bad St. Louis is 4 hours away. :-(

  15. Sarah (lovINmytummy) Says:

Did you really just post a picture of your sweaty tank top on the internet? You rule.

I am one of those girls that don’t sweat at all. Nice for the nose, but bad for the feeling like I got a bad ass workout.

  16. Susan Says:

Just wondering, do you regularly do the fitness test on your HRM? I find my calorie burns usually change when I update it, to something I assume is more correct. I went like 3 months without doing it once and it was giving me around 60 calories a mile, once I updated it I started getting 90 calories a mile which felt a lot more accurate. But I’m 5′7″ so I have no idea if shorter people burn less! :P

  17. carolinebee Says:

I don’t really sweat either it’s weird, in bikram though my shins were sweating which totally tripped me out! Have fun at the game, i like when they serve the soft serve in a little baseball hat!

  18. K Says:

That lunch is perfection on a plate – YUM!! Hope the rain doesn’t get in the way of your plans!

  19. Brooke (HomegirlCanEat) Says:

I’m not a huge sweata but when it comes to bikram..I wrap myself up in a towel before getting in my car I am so sweaty!

  20. Kath Says:

I only burn about 72 per hour. I think it means we’re fit :)

  21. Melissa S. Says:

i know i don’t burn 100 cals per hour running like all the mags say…i think i’m around 80. :) we rock, makes us special!

  22. TorontoGirloutWest Says:

That must have been one hell of a workout for you to end up dripping like that!!!

    Good going Hangry! ;)

  23. Nabeela Says:

I get totally drenched after a cardio workout. Not only is my shirt soaked but the waistband of my pants are soaked too!

  24. Katie Says:

Whoa! I didn’t realize the shirt was supposed to be darker… you must’ve felt great afterwards! I get pretty sweaty, too… especially on outdoor runs!

  25. Caroline Says:

    Yay for Sunshine Burger love!

  26. MizFit Says:

Im stealing the phrase platter of delights!

  27. RunToFinish Says:

I have long said I do not glisten, I sweat! They say it’s a sign of good fitness because your body is ready to lower your temperature for the workout

  28. Sarah (Tales of Expansion) Says:

if i ran 6 miles in 50 minutes, i’d be drenched, too!

and ohhh my goodness, that vg banana bread is giving me hot flashes. yummmmm!

  29. Anna Says:

I sweat more than some believe to be humanly possible, so I’m with ya on that one.

That VG loaf looks to die for, as do all of her baked goods.
