Farm 2 Bistro – Nutley, N.J.

by Heather Thursday, June 25, 2009

Last night for my birthday Mark took me to a small restaurant called Farm 2 Bistro in Nutley, N.J.

I was particularly excited about eating here after seeing Food, Inc. because Farm 2 Bistro is a restaurant that supports local farming.  The restaurant’s philosophy is on the website, but to summarize, Farm 2 Bistro supports local farming because local food is fresher and therefore tastier, better for the environment and more likely to have free-range and grass fed animals.

I thought this was the perfect spot to enjoy dinner during the Cleaner Life Month.

Farm 2 Bistro is a small and cozy restaurant. Inside is decorated with a mix New York and New Jersey pictures and maps and rustic, yet chic picnic tables. We were extra lucky because there was a wonderful singer/guitarist performing. It really could not have been a more perfect way to celebrate.

We started with Sweet Potato Fries and Roasted Garlic and Pumpkin Bisque.

The fries came with the absolute creamiest and most flavorful honey mustard. The fries were perfectly crispy on the outside and warm and soft on the inside. They had the exactly correct amount of grease to make them over the top good, but not sickening.

Mark’s soup was also delicious. It was creamy and subtly pumpkin. I think it would make a fabulous sauce over pasta.

For dinner, Mark ordered Pulled Pork Tacos, which he loved.

And what did I order for my birthday dinner?

CHICKEN QUESADILLA Monterey & Cheddar cheese, onions, peppers, Chipotle Aioli. Served w/ rice & beans.

Yes, I ordered chicken! I was assured by the waitress that all the chicken comes from a small local farm in New York, and therefore, I felt okay ordering and eating it. After not eating meat in any real amount in almost a year, it was really interesting. Chicken almost instantly makes me full!

I loved the quesadilla, which was more like a warm wrap. The onions and peppers inside were a wonderful addition and the Chipotle Aioli was amazing with just the right amount of spice and kick. At any other place I would have ordered something else or gotten this without chicken, which would probably have been just as tasty.

I will definitely be going back to Farm 2 Bistro!

  11. Sounds like a great meal! I love that more and more restaurants with this practice and philosophy are popping up. I would also suggest Blue Hill if you like this kind of experience. I haven’t been to their Greenwich Village location, but my bf took me to their actual farm up near Tarrytown, NY and it was IN.CRED.IBLE. Big splurge, but for a meal like that, WORTH IT. I still think of it!

  12. Your birthday dinner looked great! I hope it was a fantastic one! When I went home to Indiana in May, my dad and I dined at a restaurant called FARM. It was fantastic too. All organic. I doubt their related, but still. Similar. Again, happy birthday!

Looks like a great place to eat! That soup looks delicious.

I attempted to go vegetarian a few years ago, so I definitely relate to the instantly full feeling you get from meat. It’s much more satiating. I actually lost a significant amount of weight without trying when I introduced meat back into my diet because I filled up quicker. If you’re open to eating occasional humanely raised meats, you should check out local farms and farmers markets. There are lots of non-factory options available.

  20. 20 Marianne says:

That sounds like the perfect spot to celebrate your birthday – all the items you two ordered look delicious :)

  21. Sounds like the perfect birthday celebration Heath! I know I would love that restaurant and would definitely order the sweet potato fries. :)

  22. 22 Sarah says:

Everything you ate looks so freakin’ tasty. Even if it was splurging and breaking “rules” it looks like it was totally worth it.

  23. 23 EatingRD says:

It sounds and looks like you had a wonderful birthday! I love restaurants like that. I get like that too if I eat something that sits ‘heavier’ than I’m used to, but really everything in moderation for me :) I would go crazy trying to eliminate too much :) Have a good weekend!

That place looks really cute inside Heather!
I am obviously several days behind, as usual. :)
I’m so glad you enjoyed your chicken quesadilla! I like to you’re able to think critically about what you eat and the reasons behind it instead of letting some dogma direct your every move!
