She Says: Small Victory
Hi Everyone!
I have a few exciting things to share.
(1) I got a call from the principal of the school I interviewed at a few weeks ago (remember I had the interview, then did a lesson for him and the v.p). Well, I have the last step in the hiring process for the job!!!!! Tomorrow morning I will meet with the superintendant, so please send me more good vibes. It worked last time!
(2) I had a small victory at work today. The people I work with mean well, but their knowledge of healthy food choices is v. limited. They were all there way before I came on board, so I felt weird pressing the issue of why we choose to give the kids cookies, candy, kool-aid and chips every day for snack. Last week I suggested that we switch it up a little and have the kids make fruit kebobs. They resisted, saying the fruit would go to waste, but I’m the boss (haha), so I won.
The kids loved it!!!! They were truly excited to make the kebobs. I definitely pointed out to everyone that no one ever gets this excited for chips and fruit punch. All the fruit was gone by the end of the day. Yay for small victories.
(3) Greek Yogurt and Nut Butter (here almond butter), might be one of my favorite things to eat. It’s filling, delicious and, in my opinion, 100% healthy.
(4) I ate soy tonight.
I am not sure how I missed the fact that this Trader Joe’s Multigrain Pilaf contained soybeans, but I did. I noticed it for the first time tonight right when I was preparing to eat it for dinner. I thought about making something else, but decided not to.
I know that according to the rules of The Cleaner Life Month soy was a no no, but I’ve thought about it more. My goal this month is to limit my processed food intake and whole soybeans are a completely different thing to me than soy found in dogs, nuggets and other processed foods. So, I guess I am a rule breaker, but I like to consider myself a rule modifier. I am still not 100% sure what to think of soy, but I think whole soybeans here and there are okay (for me).
Anyway, the pilaf was very delicious. A serving was 1/2 the package, but I ate the whole thing with zucchini and summer squash.
(5) Rose reports that Clean Eating on the road is tough!!!
(6) Be sure to check out the Oh She Glows Shop for a Cause tomorrow. You can bid on my Trader Joe’s Fun Pack.
(7) So You Think You Can Dance is so awesome!
(8) Running 5 miles today was such a chore. Can anyone tell me how it’s possible to run speedily and easily one day and want to die the next?
(9) There was some controversy on blogs today. It started as a soy issue, but evolved into something bigger; the issue of “food judgment,” something that both baffles and annoys me. The posts I am referring to are found on Gliding Calm, Chocolate Covered Vegan and Choosing Raw, three wonderful blogs I love written by women I admire. Each of these bloggers respectfully articulated their points of view. Most of the controversy came via comments. For my part, I just want to say that I doubt anyone ever feels judged by me or Mark. I am laughing thinking about that. Honestly, one reason why we started this blog was to show people that food does not need to be something to stress or obsess about. It is a wonderful part of life that should be embraced and celebrated, not feared or judged. I do not believe there is one right way to eat and everything else is horrible and as someone who has been picked on for not eating the office cake at work, refuse to judge others for their food choices. Moral of the story – Hangry Pants loves you all!!!!!

There is not doubt in my mind that you will do fine and they probably already have their mind made up that it’s you that they want. Good Luck & Congratulations.
Great idea on the fruit kabobs – I did that for my daughters birthday once, and had them sticking out of a canteloupe to make it look like hair and I had my dad (who was an artist) paint a face on the canteloupe.
Loved how you ended this post (#9). Everyone has their own ideas about food, and the fact that they share their ideas and get criticized for it has always boggled my mind too.
Thanks for this post Heather!
Congratulations! Good luck with the superintendent! And good on you for the fruit kabobs!
Dude comments are a bitch huh!? Way to go with making fruit fun, that is awesome!!
Good luck with all the job stuff! I am sending lots of good vibes your way. Such an exciting “victory”! Maybe you could try veggie kabobs too. You could give different dips, like healthy salad dressing, hummus, nut butters, etc. You’re right, a little bit of soy probably won’t hurt you.
WOOT WOOT! Congrats on the final interview! I know it will go well!
Nice victory at the workplace – I have the hardest time changing people’s mind at work.
And as far as rule modifying goes – I’m all for it!
Congrats on your NOT SMALL victory! I remember when my mom worked with kids it was so hard for her to get the other adults to be on board with healthy snacks. It’s so important!
i love love love that you insisted on the fruit kebobs and that the kids proved you right by enjoying them and finishing all the fruit. this is maybe my #1 pet peeve…adults who wonder why their kids are overweight and don’t like fruits and veggies. UM hello?? because you don’t feed them any?? for the most part, kids who only eat pizza and chicken fingers and fries only eat those foods because their parents assume those are “kid” choices. i know my mom just fed me every single thing under the sun and there wasn’t a veggie or fruit i wouldnt eat. sorry for the mini rant, i just think that one little thing you did is such an amazing example of how kids really DO like that stuff!!!!!!! way to go!!!!!!
Well Good Luck on Monday then…sorry to hear it was rescheduled, but everything happens for a reason…I know you’ll be great and they’ll be very impressed.
Also, great post today about the controversy on blogs…I agree with you and Mark completely and I am glad you posted about this to spread the word that life is too short and you need to enjoy what you eat while living a healthy lifestyle.
Have a great day.
Best,
Amie

small victories are the best, I especially love that your victory was a health minded fruit battle! nicely . I hear that TJ take on Kashi pilaf is packed with sodium- I haven’t gotten it before- is that true? Kashi has 0 mg ?
I know I’m late, but I hope your last part of the interview went great
greek yogurt + almond butter is my new love
i am with you on soybeans. today i had a salad that contained them, and at first thought oh no! but then I thought about it and realized it is a whole food and different than the soy found in other foods.
oh my gosh! did you really just say that?! about me?!! no way! Hangry Pants = that cool older sibling I always am trying to hang out with!! You are so sweet. Thanks for the shout out Heather!!
love the fruit kebab thing. such a great idea and healthy alternative!
Love the fruit kabobs! I think I have a new appetizer to bring now for the potluck parties my friends have so often.
My 5 miler on Monday was totally fun and easy, and yesterday it was MISERABLE. So I feel ya there. Just hoping that I have good mojo for my 12 miler tomorrow, but just knowing that I have my race and then I never have to run that far ever again (even though I’m sure I will) should get me through.
Yay for hangry love, just in time for the weekend!
I tried to Trader Joe’s Pilaf and it was on the most horrible food I have ever consumed. I took on search for ingredients and I landed on your blog. I wonder how/why you feel it is good. (Yeah, it seems to be healthy but it comes with vinyl package, I wonder).
You have to be very picky when you buy food off the shelves at Trader Joe’s. I don’t think the store has many good ready-to-go food.
