She Says: The is hard.
Did you see me in all my running glory on Andrea from Off Her Cork’s June Feet on the Street feature?
Also, running related, Girls on the Run New Jersey is looking for coaches for the fall session. The program will now meet twice a week, once during the week and once on Saturday, but you do not have to be able to do both days to be involved. Go to the Volunteer page to get more information and email me with any questions (HangryPants@gmail.com).
The Cleaner Life Month is obviously not an easy challenge. The hardest parts so far have been avoiding soy and buying only organic produce. The wheat flour and sugar are actually pretty easy because, other than the sushi rice, you can pretty much tell when something is going to have sugar in it. In case you were wondering, most store bought bread that is not sprouted grain bread, has sugar in it, if of course, it does not have High Fructose Corn Syrup.
That said, today I had a sandwich on bread with sugar. I was really hungry, wanted a peanut butter sandwich and it was the only bread in the house. I guess I am not cut out for all or nothing. I will get back to the store for more sprouted grain bread today!
In case you were wondering, it was delicious!
To clarify, the bread contained sugar. I did not sprinkle sugar on top!!!

An all or nothing approach is hard when it comes to anything really. That’s amazing you aren’t being too hard on yourself when realizing all or nothing may not work.
Positive woman you are.
mmmmmm peanut butter….I could go for some right now
Isn’t it crazy how some form of sugar, or soy, is in almost everything? I’ve bought things thinking they would be sugar free, only to find it lurking as “evaporated cane juice” – ugh!
I’ve been reading your updates mostly as a lurker, and I think you are doing great!
Loved your “I am enough” post earlier. As for the cleaner life month — you’re doing awesome. I’m glad you enjoyed your sammy. I think black or white “all or nothing” only sets us up for failure in the end. It’s a nice goal to ban sugar or white flour, but I think it’s also important to find that balance, too.
(And I think you do a beautiful job of having balance in your choices, even without the CL month!)
i hate that it’s so hard to find bread without sugar/HFCS. that’s ridiculous!
I agree that this is super hard!
i think that doing better than the worst is fine in some instances. for example, you didnt have your PB on a fluffy refined white loaf of bread. i bet that was good, looks like it!
You are doing much, MUCH better than I would!
I agree with Melissa – whenever I tell myself none of ____, I often fail and am very hard on myself for it. I just get that in the back of my head, that I CAN’T have it…and then I can’t stop thinking about it.
I’ve been e-mailing back and forth with the contact person from GOTR in my area – I’m so excited to start! I just hope I can make the practice times, since I’m at work until about 5 usually.
I dunno, all or nothing seems a little extreme. The challenge is to have a CleanER life… your month has certainly been cleaner so far, right?
girl you are taken on quite the challenge and i know many [myself included!!] would NOT be able to do it! you should be very proud =)
Haha, the way i read that sentence, was something to the effect of you making a sandwich, then sprinkling sugar on it! I was like come on that is just cheating
I buy the ridiculously expensive watermelon containers from WF because I know that if I were to buy a whole watermelon I probs WOULD eat the whole thing in one sitting.
It’s really crazy how many random ingredients are in our foods. I know that with homemade bread you only put a little bit of sugar in with the yeast to make it have a party and work, but I wonder how much commercial bread uses to achieve the same?
hahahaha i thought the same thing as caroline bee. it took me a second to get what you meant and then i was like, ohhhh that’s all?! hehehe. i think you are doing GREAT!!!!!!!!!!! and awesome feet on the street feature!!!
I thought the same as Caroline as well – you are doing fantastic with the CL Challenge – and you know what – I bet that bread and pb was just enough for you
I don’t think I could ever “give up” a certain food. That would be TOUGH!
You’re still doing a great job!! I think I would have caved by now
Hi. I just had pasta bolognese, and wanted to dive in and swim in the bowl.
i’m seriously impressed with how well you’ve avoided sugar so far! seriously, i aim for 90% but definitely still get in more than i’d like. the bread i buy is sweetened with honey, so it’s natural and REALLY good haha. that may be a cheaper option?
I saw your feature it was very cool!! The sugar thing is definitely where I know I am falling down, though overall I feel like I’m making a shift.
