She Says: Another New Milk

First, congrats to those of you who said I made ice cream with my students in science class. There is a lot of chemistry going on when you use plastic bags to make ice cream! Ice + salt in one bag, ice cream ingredients in a smaller bag in the big bag and shake, shake, shake! The kids loved it and I think they got some science out of it. If not, they at least know why the roads are salted in the winter.

Now, I’ve almost been blogging for a year and in that year I’ve tried a lot of new things. One thing I’ve definitely experimented with is milk. I’ve always had cow’s milk and have no problem with that, but it gives Mark terrible headaches, so we’ve tried soy, almond and now rice milk.

This box was $1.67 for 4 1 Cup servings. Even though it was unsweetened I got a slightly sweet taste from it. Maybe from the vanilla extract in it? It’s lighter in color, flavor and consistency than the other milks. In fact, it’s almost water-like and does not give the appearance of a creamy warm beverage.

The blog has also brought countless new products into my life, including Mix My Granola. For breakfast I had a sample of granola I received from Mix My Granola and Rice Milk.

This is a new granola from their new line of enhancers for their customized granola. My new sample contained Organic Granola, Cranberries, Dried Blueberries, and Roasted Almonds with the enhancers of Caffeine and Lucuma. I love Mix My Granola, and dearly miss my Hangry Heather’s Muesli Mix., but I think I could taste something odd about this. Not odd in a completely bad way, just maybe a little extra flavor that I’d previously not associated with granola.

This was pre-made and I probably would not have chose a caffeine enhancer for myself. I would go with something fun like bee pollen + gotu kola powder (wait, what?). In the end, there is bad granola and good granola and I think the difference is texture, quality of ingredients and spice. This was good stuff.

I also had a cinnamon apple on the side.

What is something new you’ve tried in the last year. Did you love it or hate it?

Greek yogurt! I started with plain and it just tasted like straight up sour cream to me. But…I eased my way into it (flavored Chobani, vanilla…). Now I really crave it. And sometimes even the flavored Chobani is TOO sweet. (But not enough to keep me away). :-)

  2. katherine Says:

Oh boy, I’ve tried SO many new things, but my biggest achievements are probably Green Monsters, raw zucchini enchiladas (cashew cheese, what?!), and shiritaki noodles. The good news is I’ve loved them all and I’m even more interested now in trying more new things :)

  3. ttfn300 Says:

wow, fun new stuff! i love new stuff… most recently what i can remember is carob. unsweetened carob chips from sunspire knock my socks off. i have some chia seeds, so those are next!

  4. Kailey Says:

I haven’t really heard great stuff about rice milk from the blogging world. I thought it would be really thick, not watery. oh well.
    love the apple and cinnamon!

  5. Whitney Says:

Greek yogurt, almond milk and green smoothies. Love all of ‘em!

  6. Julie Says:

Ha! I’ve never heard of making ice cream in a ziploc bag! So cool I want to come to your class haha

Umm this year…greek yogs, soymilk, green monsters…SO much!

  7. Leah Says:

My goodness! I have tried sooo many things this last year!

    The Good:
Green Monsters, Kale (kale chips), Real Oatmeal, Dates, coconut milk ice cream, coconut water, kombucha, soy latte’s, quinoa, bulgur, agave nectar, parsnip, brown rice pasta, almond butter
    The Meh:
Greek Yogurt, tea, eggplant, almond milk, ground flax, quinoa pasta
    The Bad:
    Shiritaki Noodles, milk thistle

I’m sure there is more but that’s all I can think of for now…

  8. Kelsey Says:

i made ice cream in a bag when i was young with my mom!! she also had recipes for snow ice cream, which was always fun after a blizzard :D
i havent had rice milk before, but i bet it would be really good
this year i tried pom seeds, greek yogurt, a mainly vegetarian diet, + an array of bars (too many to count!). i’m meddling with the idea of incorporating vegan/raw eats more + more as well…

  9. Lacey Says:

you know what i would like to know more about??? INULIN. this is now in every product and it’s mother. seriously!!!!! do you know anything about it?

  10. Graze With Me Says:

I’m not a huge fan of rice milk, it tastes really funny and watery to me. Have you ever had Rice Dream ice cream though? It’s pretty good…

Something new I’ve tried in the last year would be butternut squash fries, brussels sprouts, greek yogurt, kale and green monsters with spinach. Loved them all.

  11. Rebecca Says:

I’ve tried so many things since I started blogging! I am just inspired by so many different posts! I have tried veggie burgers, soy milk, almond butter, and greek yogurt. I like so many things now that I never guess I would have liked!

  12. K Says:

New things? Greek yogurt, Kashi cereals, Amy’s products, Larabars, big girl Clif bars, almond milk! I’d be so deprived had I not discovered the blogs ;)

  13. Red Head, Yellow Dog Says:

Oh man so many new things have come from blogging. Oat bran, quinoa, butternut squash, almond milk, mixing bananas into oatmeal…stuff that I now take for granted and assume everyone else must know about! Oh how things change in a year!

  14. Red Head, Yellow Dog Says:

ps that ice cream experiment sounds SO COOL! I remember making butter once in like 1st grade…but that’s not much science..we just shook around some cream for a long time

  15. Melissa S. Says:

i’ve never tried rice milk but have been thinking about moving towards that instead of soy milk.

and this year i’ve tried lots of new fruits and greek yogurt! delish but hurts the tum tum!

  16. ellie Says:

I really like rice milk! I recently tried a fresh kind (as opposed to the shelf-stable type) and it was incredible.

I have tried so many new things the past year…from pumpkin oatmeal to felafel, to ‘crack wraps’…my list is endless (and pretty much comprised of blogger-influenced creations!)

  17. Anna Says:

I’ve also tried alternative milks… almond, soy, and hemp milk in particular. I really like almond milk, and the hemp milk was pretty tasty too (but really different than anything I’d tried before). The only downside was the fact that they can be really expensive- Living Harvest hempmilk is REALLY pricey and I jsut can’t justify the cost. I usually stick with soymilk from WF and almond breeze from TJ’s because they’re the cheapest- $1.69 and $1.99, respectively.

  18. Diana (Soap & Chocolate) Says:

I have tried almond and hemp milks in the past year and LOVE both, but for different purposes. Almond has replaced cow milk for me, and hemp is now what lightens my coffee. Other than the fact that hemp milk has a tendency to settle and separate, I don’t miss the cow milk in my coffee at all!

  19. Mrs. Myers @ Eat Move Write Says:

Kashi Honey Sunshine is new to me. I know that isn’t exactly a cool “new” thing, but I LOVE THAT STUFF. It’s all due to my blog and people’s great suggestions, so I’m thrilled to find another yummi cereal I can nosh (I usually snack on cereal rather than have it for breakfast).

Also, TJ’s carrot-ginger soup. I cannot say enough about this soup. It’s really amazing. You get all that beta-carotene (which I don’t get often enough) and it simply tastes divine. It’s almost dessert like.

    Good question.

  20. sue Says:

i tried rice milk recently too and i didn’t enjoy it…like you said, it tasted sweet and i didn’t expect that.

  21. HeatherBakes Says:

LOTS of stuff! The highlights were Greek yogurt, oat bran, and seitan. The lowlight was coconut water. Yucky.

  22. Jenny Says:

something new i’ve tried in the last year is PB&co products and i obviously loved it/am obsessed with it! however, i’ve also tried some things that i was not to big on – soymilk for instance, i cant stomach the stuff!

p.s. i just wanted to thank you so much for your sweet words on my post about my sister.. you definitely made me feel a lot better! :)

    lots of love,
    Jenny

  23. Gliding Calm Says:

i tried chi chi chi CHIA! which was new. I don’t love it or hate it….but I def. need some more new recipes….like Chia seed puddin.

whole foods brand milk is bomb. though their soy milk went up about 20 cents and it made me scowl!! trader joe’s still reigns SUPREME, but unfortunately it’s so out of the way now that I am living at home. My dad buys the 365 brand by the CASE though.

my mix my granola went WAY fast. addictive.

happy happy thursday, Heathaaaaaaaaaa! I had no idea Erin had the same glasses as me! you are so observant!

  24. Heather's Bestie Says:

I’ve tried a whole lot of stuff that you’ve talked about on the blog. My favs are Naked Juice, Mix My Granola (my personal blend, of course), and the white chocolate lime cookies you send me. I tried soy milk (that’s as crazy as I go with milk) and only find it appropriate for mixing into things (coffee, smoothies) but NEVER for drinking alone or in cereal. Can’t wait to see you tomorrow! Do you want me to bring anything?

  25. Rose Says:

Tempeh. I’m still not sure how I feel about it :)

  26. Sagan Says:

I’ve been trying so many new things in the last year! Some good, some bad, but the point is that we never know until we try :)

What’s your favorite kind of alternative to milk? Rice, soy, or almond?

  27. Heather Says:

Sagan: I think for cereal and things like that, all are good. Rice is probably my least favorite just because it was so thin. For coffee, I like soy the best because it’s the thickest I’ve tried.

  28. Caronae Says:

I have added spinach to smoothies and oats (thanks Polly!!!) in the last year and loved them both! I think the spinach actually enhances the natural flavors in both! And Greek yogurt, which is now a staple.

  29. amber Says:

You should defiantly try hemp milk next, it is my favorite

  30. Kate Says:

I’m not a huge fan of rice milk—DEF. second amber on the hemp milk!!! It’s DEELISH. Can get pricey, I want to see if they sell it @ Trader Joe’s…

    I tried a few new things…
    positive: shirataki noodles
negative: the coffee flavored Stonyfield yogurt. ew:/

  32. Sarah Says:

You know, I used to HATE tofu, but I gave it a second chance, and have learned to love it! I also just tried almond milk for the first time — surprisingly good. I have also fallen in love with Greek yogurt… I don’t want any thin yogurt anymore!

  33. brandi Says:

i’ve tried almond milk! i like it, but it’s SO much cheaper for me to buy skim and I’m fine with it.

  34. Jess Says:

Woohoo I was right! I swear I didn’t read this post first.

  35. Marianne Says:

I don’t think I could even list all of the new things I’ve tried in the last year. I’m always looking for new things at the grocery store to test out, and the blog world has just increased that! I generally only pick items that I think I will like, and I would say that most of the time I do. It then just becomes a matter of “is it worth the cost of the item to buy on a regular basis”, as alot of times, I’ll pick out new things that are pricey. But I’m always up for trying new things.

  36. Kim Says:

I have tried all kinds of new things year, but almond butter is at the top of my list. LOVE it!! I also tried Almond Milk and now drink it daily and Greek Yogurt & have a fridge stocked with it now. :)

  37. Meghan@traveleatlove Says:

Amazing Grass and green smoothies. I literally gagged on a kale smoothie at first, but I have gotten the hang of balancing the ingredients. Now I can’t live without at least one green drink a day!One thing I have actually fallen out of love with is peanut butter. I think I may have o’ded on it in years past, because I no longer like it!

  38. Dori Says:

I’ve been thinking about trying rice milk, now you convinced me to! This year I tried and fell in and out of love with greek yogurt!

I always become obsessed with something and eat it every day until one day it is gross to me. No worries, I am sure I will embrace it again in a few months!

  39. Caroline Says:

I buy that rice milk every week! I can’t resit the small price tag–$1.69 beats almond milk’s $2.99 any day!

  40. gina Says:

I tried a new coconut milk beverage by Turtle Mountain called So Delicious, and I LOVE IT! It comes in unsweetened, plain, and vanilla. I haven’t tasted the unsweetened, but the original and vanilla are really thick and creamy and taste so good I’ll never go back to drinking soy or rice milk again. And I read that they’re coming out with a new coconut milk kefir. I can’t wait to try it!

  41. leslie Says:

almond butter is by far my favorite new food that i’ve tried this past year, although there have been many many new things. i can’t believe i lived so many years of my life without it!
