She Says: What It’s Like to Wear a Running Skirt.

Don’t forget to enter the Lazy Baker Cookies Mix Giveaway!!!

As I said yesterday, I bought myself a new running skirt. “Skirt” is really a misnomer, as it is actually more like the grey skort I wore senior year in high school. At that time the grey kilts previously standard at my school had to be changed over to the, in my opinion, less fashionable skort because those naughty private school girls were not following the minimum skirt length rule. Tssk tssk.

Anyway, my new running skirt is fabulous. I got one not because I wanted new running clothes after feeling like a social misfit at the Summit with my unfashionable and old running gear. I found this New Balance Skort at Century 21, which is like a giant Marshall’s or something like that with lots of discounted department store stuff. I was very excited to try it out last night. These are my thoughts.

My online research indicates I bought the New Balance Bonita Running Skirt 2.0, which is old so I am not sure if it’s widely available anymore because there is a version 3.0

Positives

  • Comfortable.
  • Cute -  I admit I was very hesitant to try a running skirt. Who needs to look cute while exercising? It’s not really about looking cute for others as in trying to impress other people, but really it’s about enhancing the running experience for yourself.
  • Cheap $12.49 (originally $34.00).
  • Small inside pouch for snacks or iPod shuffle.

Negatives

  • Shorts ride up – I got used to this, but not sure if I would want to run more the 5 or 6 miles in it.

 IMG_8276

  • No drawstring– This was a little big and because it doesn’t have a drawstring I couldn’t adjust it. Looking at the size chart I think I needed a smaller size,  but this was all they had at Century 21.

Overall, I like having the skirt and will continue to rock it on my runs.

Moving on to something tasty, I wanted to share a really simple summer dish I made.

Eggplant, Tomato & Roasted Pepper Sauce – I had an eggplant and fresh tomatoes from my mom’s garden that I wanted to use, so I chopped them, tossed them in a pot with a little EVOO and garlic and cooked the on low heat. I then added a jar of Roasted Red Peppers (Trader Joe’s brand) and continued to cook until the eggplant and tomatoes were soft and starting to break up and make a sauce.

It was simple and delicious! I used it as a “sauce” over quinoa, but I think it would be equally delicious alone or in a wrap with hummus.

Alright, finally motivated to head over to school and get cracking on my classroom again. Mark and I are planning a trip to the movies tonight and I get to pick the movie!

Which one should I pick????

(1) Julie & Julia – V. excited to see this, but haven’t read the book. Also, I am a little blogged out.

(2) The Time Travelers Wife – Read the book, loved the book. Total girl crush on Rachel McAdams.

(3) 500 Days of Summer – Heard it’s good and Mark might like it more than the others.

(4) Something else.

I have heard REALLY bad things about TTW, and it’s making me nervous about seeing it (I’m not a HUGE romantic, but I loved the book). My vote is Julie & Julia- come on, it’s a must see for any food blogger!

I LOVE my running skirt. Wearing it NZ where hardly anyone wears skirts means I get some odd looks, and people think I’m a poser, but it’s comfy, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting to look cute- looking cute is fun!

  2. 2 Andrea says:

Go for 500 days of summer!
Its a great artsy film. I really enjoyed it!

  3. 3 Lacey says:

LOVE LOVE LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVED julie and julia. meryl streep is AMAZING. i’m going to go see this again. it’s so good and made me feel like blogging was real. important. etc. and i’m not even a food blogger!

  4. 4 Susan says:

Hmm…tough choice! I would probably see 500 Days of Summer if both of you are more into it (I don’t know about Mark, but my boyfriend is a huge whiner when I drag him to movies he doesn’t want to see :P ) Plus, I have a huge girl cruch on Zoey Deschanel! Have you heard her album?

Thanks for the thoughts on the running skirt! I was thisclose to buying one a couple weeks ago, but decided while great for running on the roads with, I’d be too embarassed to wear it to the gym.

  5. 5 Becky says:

Hi! i don’t normally post but I read alot, but I had to insert my two cents on what movie to go see. if it’s you and mark, you should DEFINITLY go see District 9!!! it’s a tad bloody at times, but the overall plot of the story is so good and it’s such a brilliantly filmed and designed movie. it’s great for girls AND guys.

  6. Tough decision on the movies. I too have a girl crush on Rachael McAdams but if I were to go with Garrett it would probably be 500 Days of Summer but I’m DYING to see the first too.

  7. blogged out!?!? i didn’t realize that was possible! i really liked J&J, but i also want to see (500) and time traveler (loved the book)! i feel like you won’t go wrong with any of those choices.

  8. I heard that TTW was awful, but this person also hated The Notebook so maybe that helps.
Ha- my first new piece of running wear in a loooong time was my summit t-shirt! A running tee that actually fits, love it! I personally don’t get running skirts, but they do look cute on people.

  9. 9 Sammie says:

I haven’t ventured into the running skirt attire. I am really picky about what I run in – I even hate to run in shorts. I usually run in pants and in the warmer weather I wear capris pants. I find it annoying when I have to constantly adjust the legs of my shorts.
I would see Julie and Julia. I heard it was great. I read the book which was fabulous and I am dying to see the movie. Charlie and I don’t get the chance to go out on dates that often so I will probably have to wait till it comes out on DVD. I hope you guys have fun tonight.

  10. 10 Amanda says:

I was JUST wondering whether I should see Julie and Julia or Time Traveler’s Wife. I’ve read both books and loved them! Can’t wait to hear what you decide.

As for running skirts, I agree on the shorts riding up. If I wear my skirt on runs longer than about 6 miles, the chafing (ew) starts. Good to know that I can wear the cute skirt on shorter runs. Glad you liked it!

  11. 11 bobbi says:

you just inspired my dinner! I also love my running skirts, I wish I could wear them to work!!!

  12. 12 Metta says:

I have a girl-crush on Rachel McAdams too!

I saw J&J on Sunday – it was really good. All the movies look great and I’m sure you can’t go wrong with what you pick.

  13. I L-O-V-E-D Julie & Julia! It’s not all about blogs, it’s more about love and relationships and it’s just FUN! Your other options look great, too.

  14. I’m very torn between movies 1 and 2! I want to see them both!

  15. 15 Emily says:

I`ve been debating buying a running skirt, but I just wasn’t sure enough. I`d rather stick to shorts or leggings for now.

I haven’t seen any of those movies (I did just see District 9 last night, which was good, if you like those type of movies), but I want to see them all. I`ve heard a LOT of good things about 500 Days of Summer. It’s playing at a small local theater, so I might go this weekend. That’s what I say go for!

  16. 16 kaila says:

THE TIME TRAVELERS WIFE WAS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! complete tear jerker and great story! definitly a must see!!!!!!!!!!!!11

  17. 17 Melissa S. says:

    500 days of summer!!!!!!

  18. 18 Sara says:

I wear the oldest clothes ever, over and over (and I probably smell). Anyway, I have a pair of capris I wear all the time because I don’t like wearing shorts (friction, anyone?) and it has a pocket (I need to carry my inhaler at all times, just in case, and my phone, in case said inhaler is used…I’d need a ride home!). Interesting to see that pocket in the skirt! Could it be just what I need?

  19. julie and julia was great – every food blogger should see it!!!

  20. 20 Erin says:

Meryl Streep. That seals the deal!

  21. 21 Rebecca says:

Julie & Julia!! It was awesome!! I want to see 500 days of summer though!

  22. 22 Sues says:

I loved Julie and Julia the movie much better than the book!! I loved the Time Traveler’s Wife book but heard the movie was just OK. And I reallyyy want to see 500 days of summer!

  23. 23 alyssa says:

I have to tell you…I read The Time Travelers Wife and loooooooooooved the book. I cant say enough good things about it! But to be honest..the movie left me a little disappointed after reading the book. It didnt come close to how amazing the book was. I think I would vote for J&J.

  24. 24 chandra says:

I’m glad you liked the skirt!

And I’m so glad you posted that meal! I still have some cooked quinoa leftover and my bff just gave me an eggplant from her garden today that I had no idea what to do with!

Question for you on eggplant – the seeds… the last one I got was really seedy and weird… do I cut the seeds out? Soak them out? I’m such an eggplant newbie. :-)

  25. 25 Heather says:

Chandra: I don’t do anything to get the seeds out. They can be bitter and so sometimes I slice them and then put a paper towel over them and literally beat them with a roller to get some of the “bitter juices” out. That’s what my mom always did. Sometimes, I don’t do anything after I cut them and I just cook them and ignore the bitter.

  26. 26 Kelly says:

I want to see the Time Travelers Wife! I really want to read the book too!

  27. I know you already decided against a movie tonight but just incase you’re going this weekend…

I just saw J and J…I really liked it! It’s not too blog heavy. Meryl Streep’s voice got a bit perky for me by the end.

I have the biggest girl crush on Rachel McAdams! Glad I’m not alone :)

  28. 28 Caroline says:

Thanks for the info on the running skirt–I’ve been curious about them for a while now!

  29. 29 Jess says:

If you still decide to go to a movie this weekend I’d definitely go to Inglorious Basterds.

500 Days of Summer was really good as well. It had a couple lovely, imaginative scenes that definitely makes it worth a watch, but you don’t really need to see it in the theatre.

  30. 30 Susan says:

If you’re looking for another running skirt, Target has them. I got mine for $15…Their Champion C9 line is pretty good too!

  31. 31 MegaNerd says:

I vote TTW! If I had to pick, that’s what I would see. I heard J+J was really long… and would feel longer if you are “blogged out”.

Thanks for the running skirt review! I have been hesitant to try one… but I still don’t think I want to. LOL. I don’t think I would feel as hardcore!

  32. 32 mom says:

Once again I had spoiled quinoa …this time it was from Daves. :{ Next time you come home you will have to make it for me!

  33. 33 Rosie says:

I love love love my running skirt. It’s a lot like the one in your picture, withe the little shorts underneath. It just looks so good! I’ve promised my daughter one, so need to do a bit of online shopping now!

I really love what you blog about here, very insightful and intelligent. One thing though, I’m running Firefox on Ubuntu and parts of your layout pieces are a little misaligned. I realize it’s not a popular setup, but it is still something to to keep in mind. Just shooting you a heads up.
