She Says: Apples and Burgers
If you couldn’t guess from my hints, Mark and I were meeting Sabrina and her new husband for a fun day of apple picking.
Sabrina just moved to Philly and we live up in north Jersey, so we tried to find a spot between the two of us. Sabrina found Terhune Orchards, a great little orchard in Princeton, N.J.
The boys were great map readers and taste testers.
The apples were beautiful.
We stumbled upon baby apples and some other little fruits that we couldn’t quite identify.
Here’s our loot. We chose some Jonathon, Macintosh and Jonamacs. I like crisp apples that are a little more sweet than sour.
It doesn’t look like a lot, but it’s 4.1 lbs. of apples! I love apples and will happily eat 2 (or more) a day, but Mark wants something baked. Maybe we’ll compromise.
Three miles from the orchard is the farm and store. As soon as we got out of the car we all smelled donuts and were excited to taste them. We were hoping they would be apple cider donuts.
Right out front there was a stand with food, cider, donuts and cookies.
Mark got a pulled pork sandwich that he really liked. He ate it while the rest of us perused the farm store.
Sabrina picked up some donuts and Mark ate two. I stole a little bite and it was really good, but I don’t think mine was apple cider. Homemade donuts are so much better than Dunkin Donuts.
We also saw some turkeys running around and looking for food. Gobble gobble.
It was so wonderful seeing Sabrina and her husband. We have so much in common and it was nice to catch up and swap stories. I am thinking of making a Philly trip to support her (and Rose) when they run the Philly Half next month. It was also sweet to be outside in a beautiful environment. Not all of New Jersey looks like it does on TV or from the highway. I almost felt like I was back home in Rhode Island.
Sabrina shared some homemade blueberry muffins. Mark and I each had one on the way home. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked the fruit, but also the actual taste of the muffin. It wasn’t too sweet and tasted almost like a soft biscuit. She made them with Stonyfield yogurt!
Mark and I were v. excited when we stumbled upon one of our old favorites.
Wawa makes us happy, so we made a pit stop.
The smell inside any Wawa is always the same. It’s not exactly pleasant, but it’s an oddly comforting mix of coffee and sandwiches.
I had a half a cup of chemical French Vanilla “Cappuccino.”
Even though the orchard was only 57 miles from our house, it actually took close to 2 hours to get there because of all the back roads we took. By about 7:00 I was really getting hangry, so as soon as we got off the Parkway, we headed straight for Elevation Burger.
I got a Veggie Burger and side salad. Kind of a sad side salad for $3, but I was hungry and needed something else with the burger.
Sabrina asked me what the veggie burgers were made of. This is the vegan burger and I believe it’s made of grains, veggies, mushrooms and soy. The other veggie burger contains cheese as well. It’s an okay veggie burger, but it’s a more than okay place, which is why I like it there.
It was fast, easy, relatively cheap for a dinner out, and pretty tasty.
Now I am home hydrating and getting ready for tomorrow. Wish me luck! And good luck to everyone running in a race tomorrow. Have fun and be careful!!!

Now I want to go to an orchard!
Looks like a great time! I’m not a huge fan of apple licking because it takes so little time to pick a ridiculous amount of lb’s of fruit! That’s what I love about berry picking is it takes forever
apple picking looks fun!
i’ve heard SO MUCH about wawa from my friends who went to school in philly and new jersey!
i used to go apple picking every year with my family. however, i haven’t been in a while. i grew up across the street from a orchard. Those baby apples are so cute! The muffins look amazing, can i please eat them off the screen. And that also doesn’t look to bad for a restaurant made veggie burger. i don’t think i would be a fan of the white bread bun though. i always call white bread duck bread. because when i was little i would feed it to the ducks off my grandmothers dock, haha. have a great night.
Awww I love apple picking and have been dying to go. Adorable picture of you and Mark!
I am so jealous of all you people who get to go apple picking. Fun fun fun!!! I also like crisp apples that are sweet. Sour/tart apples are so not my thang.
You and Mark are so cute. Love that pic! And LOVE WAWA!!! I’ve only been once when visiting PA/NJ a few years ago, but that place is like weird, convenience store heaven.
Good luck tomorrow. You will do great! I’m jealous of those cider donuts. I don’t normally like donuts, but the cider kind remind me of living in Vermont.
Awww…what a great time. Both couples look so cute!
I have never been apple picking…it sure looks like fun!! I love that it is apple season : )
How fun! I haven’t been apple picking since I was around 6 years old living in Connecticut!
How fun!! I want to go apple picking so badly! Good luck with running!
what fun
good luck tmr!
I love WaWa. I miss it from my youth and always stop in when I’m down that way. Such great memories of shorty hoagies and sizzli sandwiches.
I love the fall b/c you get to do fun fall type stuff like picking apples and pumpkins, etc… btw – those aren’t turkeys – they’re called guinea hens or guinea fowl – it’s the Pennsylvania in me, it’s how I know!

Hilary: That will probably make Sabrina feel better because I made a joke about them being thanksgiving dinner for some people and I think I made her feel bad.
Sounds like a fun Fall activity! I would love to go apple picking one day but down here in GA, it seems like the more popular activity is a corn maze. Which is weirdly scary,
I’ve been dying to go apple picking and you just made me want to go even more! I completely agree with your apple tastes – crisp and sweet is the way to go. Have you tried the honey crisp variety? I think those, jazz, and fuji apples are my favorites.
Best of luck tomorrow!!
I guess it was a perfect apple picking day all around…Brian and I went today too! And of course also got donuts. I dont know what it is with those donuts but they are like cinnamon sugar coated heaven in a paper bag. So fun that you met up with Sabrina!
I think Mark is very appropriately dressed for apple picking. He looks like a farmer.
GOOD LUCK TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m so jealous that you got to pick apples at Terhune. I used to work next door, but I was never there for apple season. But I do know first hand that their donuts are delicious!
Enjoy the Jersey apples!
