She Says: Good Day to be Off
I didn’t have school today and the mail man must have known because he delivered me three special treats.
When I woke up I had a big bowl of oatmeal with ground flax + Barney Butter. It was wonderful to be able to eat and enjoy a leisurely breakfast with the Today Show.
This morning I was treated to Nature’s Pride bread courtesy of the FoodBuzz Tastemaker program. I’ve tried this bread before and it’s really good, so I am looking forward to trying these. I put one in the freezer and will use the other this week.
While watching the The View I did some lesson planning. It was quite lovely! Mark was around too and he just loves The View (not joke EDIT: I actually meant “not joke” like from Borat, i.e. Mark likes the view. NOT!!!!). I went to the doctor this afternoon and when I got back home I got two new treats.
In the first package was some Sweet Mint organic non-funky ingredient lip balm from EOS. It’s super minty, so much so that I believe it improves breath. It’s also really smoothing and moisturizing. It comes in a cute little pod.
And a box of Uncle Sam Toasted Whole-Wheat Flax & Flaxseed Cereal. I’ve never tried this!
I think I am going to join a gym today. If you recall, I did not re-join when my membership expired in June. I thought I could get by running outside and supplement with yoga. That didn’t really work all that well. It’s hard to only run. I think that could have contributed a bit to my hip pain. I wasn’t necessarily running more than usual (in fact, I was running less), but I was barely doing anything else. I also really want to add some variety to my workouts. I’ve been getting bored and lazy, which is not good. Also, I found myself eating a quick relatively healthy, but lacking in nutrients and variety dinners that were quick and easy just so I could get outside to run before it got too dark. This way, I will be able to enjoy dinner and go to the gym after if necessary. So, those are my reasons for coughing up the cash to join the gym! Off I go.





We got one of those lip balms in the mail too. Yum! I love anything mint. Congrats on your second half, sorry it wasn’t the best run in the entire world but hey – you were able to push through and finish even though things weren’t perfect which is awesome in and of itself! (and I am jealous of your time….maybe I can break 2 hours with my next one but I’ll be happy to break 2:10…)
those are great reasons to join the gym, and hopefully, that will give you more options once the weather really cools off, too.

I back joining the gym. 1) Spending the money will encourage you to go. 2) Spending money on yourself seems like a good idea right now–your schedule is very busy and you should treat yourself to this! It can be “Heather Time.”
I just joined a gym too and it’s 100% worth it! It’s totally changed up my routine and revived my passion for exercise. In terms of running, I also find my best gains are actually made in my cross-training workouts
Good luck at finding a gym! I’ve always been lucky enough to have the college gym at my disposal so far in my life and I feel lucky for that. It’s definitely it’s own culture with new friends to meet
Those are all good reasons to join a gym… they’re pretty much the same reason I caved in and joined too! It feels good to be able to use alot of equipment in one trip and focus on different areas rather than a run outside. PLUS… I’m not sure where you are, but its getting very chilly very fast in CT so runs outside are harder and harder to motivate myself to do. And I realized just how much I missed the gym since I rejoined. It’s a good decision for you!
Oh and p.s. I adore that little cat bowl you have your oats in!!! SOOOO cuute
My dad LOVES The View, and he’s the coolest dude I know, so Mark’s in good company. I also got my bread today, which went straight into the freezer. SCORE!

I’ve been thinking of joining a gym as well for the reason to be able to partake in different classes, because its going to start getting cold her REAL fast, so i think it would be such a great idea to be able to do different things other then running! can’t wait to hear what you decide!

you gotta tell me — why is there a day off from school today? I saw my brother lounging around in the kitchen this afternoon and I totally thought he was skipping.. I was able to tell my mommy on him
I miss living in your area and having all the holidays off. It was great to be able to just hang around some days. And how wonderful to get some cool presents
I definitely know that I need the gym. I got tendonitis in my hip trying to just run and so now I’m back to alternating the running with the elliptical and step and DVD’s occassionally.
Good luck in finding a gym, I think it is great you are going. I too try to just run and do yoga, but sometimes it is nice to have options.
I love relaxing days like that. You deserve it after that race! I have been thinking about joining a gym lately too – with the cold weather approaching quickly!
I love that Uncle Sam Cereal – one of my favorites. Very plain, but something satisfying about it.

Good luck with the gym. As much as I don’t like working out in a gym I definitely appreciate it when it is dark out before and after work.
I love (and want) that lip balm! The size is very deceiving though. Is the balm itself about the size of an egg like I think? Give me some scale here.
Glad you got a day off after your busy weekend! Teaching on low-energy is not easy. I got my bread today, too – it’s tempting but I’m thinking it’s going in the freezer for now!

Oh gosh, I do not like the View very much. It’s too much talking at once, I call it noise pollution. If only they were a bit more polite. Maybe I’m an old granny!
Congrats on the race Heather!!!! I once had a square cosi bagel on the way home from Boston since it’s the only one at the Virgin America Terminal- it was verryyy enjoyable

I got the bread today too and I am so stoked to try it! I am scrapping the oatmeal for tomorrow and having that bread with pb and banana instead! I also put one loaf in the freezer for another time. Which one did you freeze? I froze the 12 grain bread and am having the whole wheat asap!

Great idea about joining the gym again. I think cross training is extremely necessary for runners. I ran a 1/2 marathon myself in early August after doing a lot of cross training while recovering from an injury. I had my fastest 1/2 marathon ever, and beat my previous PR by about 7 minutes. I then became really lazy after becoming bored with running. The last 1/2 marathon I ran in September – only 1 month after the other one, I was so out of shape that I could barely finish. Lesson learned – I need to do lots of strength training and cross training to maintain fitness. I lose muscle mass very quickly if I dont work on it!
