She Says: Hips Don’t Lie
Is it weird to say this was my favorite car passenger ever?
What, you’ve never had 2 dozen warm bagels in your car? You’re missing out.
Me and another girl at work did the Friday Bun Run for the teachers and I gladly volunteered to get bagels. New Jersey is not my home and I have no reason to say this, but they have THE BEST bagels. I’ve never had a bad one here and my favorites are from Hot Bagels Abroad. I had a nice hot Blueberry Bagel yesterday morning and I loved it. People, if you are scared of bagels, please just eat a good one once in awhile, especially if you are ever in New Jersey.
Anyway, I usually save big bagels like that for the weekend, but I was feeling sassy so I went with it. I also had my first observation by the vice-principal yesterday. Not sure what I was thinking agreeing to a Friday afternoon before a long weekend observation, but I think it went well. We’ll see what he says!
After work I headed out for a short run – the last one before Sunday’s Half Marathon. I took about 20 steps and did something I’ve never done. I stopped and walked back inside. You see, when I ran on Thursday night I returned home with an intense pain in my right hip bone. It’s pretty weird. I always thought that when runners said their hips hurt it was lower, but this is right at my bone. It almost feels like a bruise and it even hurt to walk Thursday night and Friday. Sadly, it still hurts today.
I am a huge injury phobe, so I marched right back inside and researched hip injuries. I know Tina has had a lot of hip trouble and I am pretty nervous about this. I did some online searching and lot of what I found attributed my pain to overuse, pronation problems or stride issues. For example, I found this information at Cool Running.
Description:
Pain in the side of your hip, usually at the joint of your hip and thigh but sometimes a bit higher toward the hip bone.As applied to me: Yep, my pain is right at my hip bone.
Likely causes:
A basic overuse injury. You’ve inflamed the fascia in your hips, the flexible fibers in the joint. The specific reasons for this pain vary for different runners. The culprit may be weak back muscles, the type of surface on which you run, the shoes you wear, or the length of your running stride. One of the remedies below will likely work for you, but it’s difficult to predict which it will be. However, if you have pain in only one of your hips, you probably have either an uneven pelvis or unequal leg lengths. See the section above on lower back pain for details on treating this.As applied to me: Clearly, mine is not from overtraining. It could, however, be due to my stride or pronation. I’ve noticed that lately my after work runs are really hard because I am quite tired. It’s a struggle to lift my legs an appropriate amount. Running tired is probably something that could lead to poor form and a injury.
Remedy:
As mentioned, hip pain can come about for a variety of reasons. Try these remedies; one of them (or a combination) should get rid of the pain, albeit with a bit of persistence. Try shortening your stride when you run. Try switching running surfaces (if you’ve been running on a hard surface, try a softer one or vice versa). Reconsider your running shoes; your feet may demand a different style or fit. Finally, try some abdominal and lower back exercises to strengthen those muscles.
As applied to me: Try to focus on my stride more and rest after tomorrow’s Half.
Instead of running I came home and ate a bowl of cereal and graded papers. I am a wild one. I’ve been eating this Nature’s Path Optimum Blueberry Cinnamon Cereal. It’s okay, nothing special. The flavors are not very strong at all. Really hard and crunchy though, so I think it makes a better yogurt topping than cereal.
Alright, I am off to Girls on the Run. Obviously, there will be no running for me! And then Mark and I are going apple picking with one of my favorite bloggers. Want to know who? Here’s two hints: she recently got married and moved to a new city. We are meeting at an orchard between our two locations about an hour away from each of us. Hmmmm. Who could it be?!?!

I was having hip pain a few months ago. It got to the point where I was limping slightly all the time. Doing pigeon pose helped a bit but buying new shoes solved the problem COMPLETELY! It was amazing. The hip pain went away completely. I hope you find a solution to your hip pain.
Also, I have that Shakira song on one of my running playlists. lol.
Apple picking sounds fun, what a great autumn day for that!
my hips have issues because one day in college i was late for ballet, and started with everyone else mid barre. A grand battement later my hip popped in the most painful way EVER and it’s been funky ever since. Good news: when i say things about my hip, i get to call it a ballet injury, which amuses me.
I’m going apple picking today too, near Boston!
Boo for the hip – it’s smart of you to take it easy. I always push it and make myself miserable and worse. Once I even had to skip a race that I had been training for months for because of a day-before-pushing-too-hard run. Lesson learned.
Glad the observation went well!! Happy weekend!
i love your shout out to jersey bagels! i always overload on those when i am home because they are SO delicious. the ones in CA just dont compare!
I hope your hip feels better for tomorrow! I was just talking about going apple picking this weekend! Have fun!
omg my mom always had bagels in the car for road trips for us! love them! and have fin with monica, from Run Eat Repeat if she is the lucky blogger apple picking with you!
xoxox
lo
I had a hip injury this past spring and it sucks! Mine was part over-training, part old sneakers (older than 6 months, apparently that rule really does apply). I had to lay off running for two whole months for the pain to go away, as well as back off on cycling and lower-body weight lifting. Good call on not running through it – get lots of pigeon pose in before your race!
Feel better, dear Heather!! And have fun today
I’ve had hip pain off and on – rest is usually what helps me.
LOVE NJ bagels.
Jersey has the BEST BAGELS EVER! I’ve driven with dozens of bagels in my car, and it is dangerous!
Have a blast apple picking, such a great fall activity!
Sabrina!
mmmm Bagels!! I wish I lived anywhere close to good bagels…
oh and I hope you have a great time apple picking!
Well, I’ve only read the first line of this post, but I feel the need to respond right now because I resent that!! I am a better passenger than a bag of warm, doughy bagels! (Although the argument can be made that we are rather equivalent.) HA! That’s funny!
You are a wild one! If only everyone knew how many times I’ve seen a bright red side ponytail atop your head!
I had a full-sized blueberry bagel for breakfast as a treat after a long shift and it was SO good, I had missed having bagels! Definitely going to buy them more often.
ohh have so much fun apple picking! i just went last weekend, its such a perfect time the apples are da bombbb
isnt it such a tease when you have to drive home with a big bag of take out or in this case fresh bagels that smell up the whole car??
i had piriformis syndrome from my super limited undestanding is a nerve in your hip is pinched and irritated. the PT said to really work the core and back muscles bc alot of runners dont (i sure didn’t), stretch alot, ice and rest it. kinda the usuals, but since i started doing core work on a ball, it has really helped. i still hate core work but its helped!
I wasn’t a huge fan of that blueberry cereal either – it just tasted mehh to me. But I tried the strawberry yogurt one and it’s soooo good. The strawberry flavor is very prominent with every bite – delicious! I recommend that one.
Say hello to Rhodey Girl for me !!!!
bagels look yummy and yeah they do scare me :/
jenna
I’m sorry your hip is hurting but OMG there is NOTHING like a Jersey bagel (except a NY bagel or bialy …!) I’m from Jersey and won’t eat a bagel anywhere else. Twice a year I go home and let me tell you there is ALWAYS a bagel on the agenda at some point … and pizza
Good luck tomorrow !!!!
I’m totally with you on Jersey Bagels. I only eat bagels when visit the ‘rents in NJ!
