She Says: Best Oats Ever!
I made it to my first ever spin class this morning! I have to admit that I was reallllly scared walking in, but I have no idea why. I’m not exactly out of shape, I can run half marathons and know how to pedal. So what was up with the fear? I think I was afraid of that hard seat, and I was right to be scared. The worst part of the class by far was the hard seat and the warm up at the beginning when we were mostly sitting. Other than that, it wasn’t that bad. I think I’ll try again! It was fast paced & the teacher was fun (even though he was sick, didn’t ride and kept joking that he had swine flu). I wasn’t totally impressed with the burn (43 mins, 326 cals, av. hr 153) – less than running, much more than the stationery bike and similar to the elliptical. I was probably being reserved for the first time, but now I know I can pedal harder!
I came home and made THE BEST bowl of oats ever.
-
1/2 C Oats
-
1 C Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk
-
1/2 Frozen Banana
I don’t know why, but it was amazing today! Maybe it was the beautiful antique spoon that Caitlin gave me that made the bowl.
It’s a rainy & chilly day here in NJ. So far, I’ve washed clothes & watched more HOMYM.
Have a great day.

SO happy you tried spin! You can definitely burn more, just get yourself used to it. I usually burn about 400 in a 45 minute class and my heart rate stays high the whole time. Glad you enjoyed it!

Glad you enjoyed spin class, and the oatmeal sounds delish!! Enjoy your weekend!

Oatmeal is always my favorite way to refuel. This morning I had cinnamon and raisin pb, but it was PB&Co. brand. That’s much easier to find around MA/RI than the elusive P.B. Loco

See, those bike seats are archaic! At first when I looked at your bowl of oats I thought that was a think pile of brown sugar! Reading that it was in fact peanut butter makes much more hangry pants sense.
I LOVE HEATHER P! (excited today for no good reason.)

I never went to a spinning class either. Actually, I haven’t gone to any class at my gym yet. I just don’t think I’m comfortable enough for now. Maybe in the next couple of weeks I’ll try a couple of different classes just to do something different and not be bored of the same ol’ gym routine.

So good to hear a spin review from someone trying it for the first time. I am a bit scared but I’m super excited to try it as well.

I’m glad you liked spin and that you didn’t start all crazy! The first time I went my heart rate went really high really fast and I vomited. Wow!
P.S. You’re so right abt Rob. He is built for Jerz. I mean, he used to manage a tanning salon!

Congrats on conquering spin! I was sooo scared for my first one – it took me forever to work up the courage to go. I’m still nervous!

Glad you had a great time at spin class….I agree they can be kind of intimidating with the dark room and everyone packed so tightly but it almost feels like you’re all one big bike team racing for the finish! Okay, that was lame, but seriously, spinning is great!

I’ve never tried spin…I’m too scared! Good for you conquering your fears and making it through your first class! Great job!

I used to do spin all the time and I loved it. Congrats on the first class!

Glad to hear you tried out spin class. Hubs and I go at least 3x a week and love it. The instructor really makes the class and I think if he was on the bike you might have burned more. I burn over double that BUT I am heavy over 200 lbs so of course I’ll burn more but I think the more you go, the better it will get.
After 2+ years spinning I’m finally getting spin shoes! Hubby has had them and says they make a total difference in his ride so I can’t wait.
Your bowl of oats sounds great!

yay for spinning!! I have never been to a class but always wanted to try one.
mm sometimes the simplest bowl of oats are just the best.

I’m glad you liked spinning class… you are ahead of me, since it took me MONTHS after months of spinning to enjoy it. It wasn’t until I started going at least twice a week that I turned my hate for it into pure love. But once you get hooked, it’s SO addicting!!

Just wanted to let you know found the pumpkin pie yogurt at the whole foods in West orange.
Have a good weekend!

Get a gel seat!! It makes all the difference.

I always wanted to try one of the spin classes out at my college gym, but never got around to it. I’d sign up and chicken out. Fantastic, right?

This is one example:

It makes the bike seat a LOT easier on the rear.

You can usually find them at big-box or sporting goods stores

Glad you had a good first experience with spinning!

I’ve never tried using a frozen banana in my oats–how does it change the texture if at all?
October 18th, 2009 at 5:43 am
Spin is my favourite class at the gym!! I hope the instructor helped you set up your bike. I’m really finicky about my bike fit, and it can make a huge difference in the amount of bum pain I’m in after (although, you really do get used to it). I find I typically burn less with biking/spinning than I do running, just because my heart rate drops a lot when I’m seated. But the great thing about it is that you can do it for a lot longer periods of time than running without burning out (some spin classes are up to 90 minutes long!). Also, I like that you can control your resistance, so you’re always in control of how hard you want to work

Susan, When I walked in I asked him if my legs were supposed to straighten and he came over and helped me adjust the bike.

It doesn’t really change it – maybe makes it more creamy because of the added moisture.

They have spin classes at our college, and they always look so fun, but very challenging as well!!
October 18th, 2009 at 10:31 am
So happy to hear that you enjoyed our first spin class. I remember mine… I was nervous as well. You just don’t know what to expect and than it is over and you are like.. wow. I did it and enjoyed it! Than the next day your legs are sore and you think – what did I do. HAHA
