He Says: Eco-labels on WNYC
When I heard this on the radio last Friday I thought of you.
It is WNYC’s Leonard Lopate interviewing Dr. Urvashi Rangan (Greener Choices) and Dara O’Rourke (founder and CEO of GoodGuide.com) on his always interesting radio show Please Explain. They discuss the prevalent use of non-existent or lenient standards for product labels, sometimes referred to as green washing.
They talk:
- organic (for food, personal care items, and fish)
- fair-trade
- free-range
- natural
- fresh
- bird friendly
- biodynamic
- hormone-free
- and many others.
Please check it out and let me know what you think.

I actually wrote a post about this just yesterday. Green washing is definitely a problem!

Thanks for posting this — I’m going to listen to it now!
“Organic” and “natural” are labels thrown around pretty loosely on packaging these days (like “low-carb” used to be), and it’s important to know what these things really mean when it comes to our food…

Thank you for showing me this Mark. I thought it was really informative and will make me think twice before I am swayed by labels and packaging!
