She Says: Rotten Tomatoes
Remember when I made that Roasted Acorn Squash Pizza? I said I wanted to put roasted tomatoes on it as well, but something went wrong. That something was rotten tomatoes that I purchased at Trader Joe’s. For my most recent Examiner article, Navigating Trader Joe’s in 5 Easy Steps, I wrote about one of Trader Joe’s biggest shortcomings in my experience: produce. The tomato marks the fourth time I personally have bought produce at TJs only to find out it was already rotten (squash in a bag) or have it rot the next day. Booo.
So, please check out the article. It mentions some of my favorite products as well.

I definitely agree with number 4. Trader Joe’s is where I’m most likely to pick up something new. And their bread section is great because it’s all so cheap but high quality. And I think Trader Joe’s has more chocolate covered items than anything else in the store!
Oh I’ve had that experience as well! It’s very unfortunate, because I do love Trader Joe’s..A good friend of mine found a piece of plastic in her parmesean cheese from TJ’s a few years ago as well, and I once found a piece of wire in a packaged rice they sell..yuck!
Come to think of it, last time I bought a bag of onions tehre they were turning bad inside! Def not where I go for produce, but I’ll deal with their lack of produce for everything else they offer
I agree with #5. The checkout area is dangerous!
Love those peanut butter filled pretzels!
Interesting. I will have to make sure I double check stuff before I leave the store. That hasn’t happened to me yet. The produce from our local neighborhood green grocer goes bad pretty quickly, but they are a super cheap family business, so I still try to support them!
I have always had the same problem! Apples, bananas, avocados….all went rotten very quickly or were already bad on the inside when I got them home
Otherwise I love TJ’s (and your article)!
Oh wow. I have never had had that problem with TJ’s.
Great Article.
I have stopped buying produce there except for brussel sprouts (those are always good there).
I also love the Wine section. Great for when I am hosting a party and need some cheap wine.
I have never been to Trader Joes. Not close to us. I have heard good things, but I’ll keep that in mind about the produce. That is terrible that produce rots that fast. I would be livid, it takes time to go exchange it.
Hmm, funny you mentioned that – every single time I get a salad mix or a bag of spinach at TJ’s, it either goes bad the very next day or I get really sick. Also, their Brussels sprouts (in my store) are always halfway to rotten. Still, I’m in love with the store and I continue to go there for everything else.
i totally never buy produce there too cause it always goes bad. great article!
That’s why I don’t buy fresh produce there. Ours is over an hour away so I don’t have the option to return it. But I love all the fun little things and they are regular parts of our menu such as roasted corn and raw crunchy almond butter
oh wow. what a bummer. I havent had that happen yet. But thats so disappointing when your all exciting for something and realize its bad by the time you get home. I dont go to TJs since its super mobbed all the time. But they do have some good things though!
