She Says: I’ll Take the Physical (and Mental) Challenge

by Heather Tuesday, February 2, 2010

The mind quits before the body.

I’ve decided to take a Physical Challenge, a resurgence of the Hangry Pants Monthly Challenge if you will. I shall elaborate.

About 20 days ago my sister Nadine “Stinky Cheese” Pants emailed me a link to a 40-day yoga challenge at her yoga studio. “Could I do this?” she asked. “Yes!” I said, “Do it.”

She’s on Day 17 and loves it. The daily physical pain is gone, and she’s getting better at quieting her mind and feeling the poses without judgment that got me. Who couldn’t use some of that?

I wondered if I could do something similar and found out that a nearby studio a reader told me about does an unlimited month for only $50 for new students. This is an extremely huge bargain  compared to the $170+ unlimited months typical at local studios.

So I  decided to do it: 30 Days to do as much yoga as possible – my goal is one class per day between February 1 and March 2.

Last night I headed to the studio for Day 1. This was my first time at this Hot Power Vinyasa studio. At first, I felt like a traitor to my studio, but then I let it go. I’ll be back there soon enough. It’s hot vinyasa, so I was inevitably covered in sweat 5 minutes in. It was a pretty  big class, so I hope eventually I get a smaller one with more attention paid to me (duh) and details of alignment. Loved it and can’t wait to go back tomorrow!

I am really super excited about this 30 days! I am looking forward to the mental and physical struggle and everything that comes along with it!

When I got home I whipped up a quick HH Cookbook Tester Meal (By the way, a few people asked about the Peanutty Spread, but I can’t tell what’s in it. Sorry!) This was fast and simple baked beans & cornbread. Loved ‘em both, will use ‘em both again.

  2. I think it is an awesome challenege…I am going to join in. I did yoga yesterday for the first time in a long time and felt so much better afterwards. I day down, why not 30 more to go!

What an awesome challenge (and a great deal)!

  4. 4 Runeatrepeat says:

My original Feb challenge was yoga too, but I am a sissy and changed it. I should at least try yoga 2x a week…Hmmm.

  5. 5 Sarah says:

Awesome yoga challenge! I did one last month where I did yoga 4 times a week and it has been an amazing experience. I need to keep it up now though, it’s really made me happier and peaceful :)

  6. 6 Evan Thomas says:

    That dinner sounds absolutely rocking
Lol clearly somebody likes their bread ;-) I’m a sucker for sweet breads myself

  7. My February challenge is yoga too! I did a whopping 15 minutes last night… I now have Marc Summers’ voice in my head saying “You’ll have to answer the question or take the physical challenge”

  8. I am doing yoga 5x/week for at least 20 minutes. I love yoga. It challenges me in totally different ways. Good on you for doing that.

  9. i love that mark’s least favorite food is N/A…that sounds like my husband :) good luck with the yoga challenge, that’s such a cool thing to do! can’t wait to hear the results!

  10. 10 Jessica says:

Funny, I just decided to do a month-long yoga challenge too! I stopped doing it when I started training for my half marathon, but really want to get back into it. I’ve decided to do at least a 20-minute video or podcast/YogaDownload until my race on the 28th!

  11. I love setting myself challenges, whether they are days, weeks, or months long! It is a great way to try something new and push yourself a bit. I’ve always wanted to try hot yoga, sounds great =) Good luck!

  12. 12 Heather's Bestie says:

What a great challenge! The beans look great.
    Sleepwalking through life today.

  13. 13 RhodeyGirl says:

Yay! It DOES feel like we are old friends, doesn’t it????

Congrats on your yoga challenge- it is going to be fun!

  14. 14 Sarah says:

Wow… those baked beans look amazing. Can’t wait for Lindsay’s cookbook to come out, I’m so jealous of you lucky testers! :)

I love hot yoga, good luck with your challenge!

  15. 15 bhealthier says:

seriously, i saw yoga pants at Gap – black and one with a pink stripe, one with blue.
    I thought of you.
    aw that rhymes.

good luck with your yoga challenge! yoga everyday is amazing , but I couldn’t afford it long term- $50 a month on top of everything else. However, 1 month challenge will be awesome! There is this “donation” studio that is actually insanely great, but they tell you their typical “donation” is $10 per class, which would equate to $310 dollars for a month.

  16. 16 Katie says:

Do you think you will not be running during this month or will you just do both?

  17. 17 Hangry Pants says:

Katie, I will still run but most likely a lot lot less. I can’t imagine running for an hour and then doing 90 mins of yoga too often!

  18. 18 Run Sarah says:

What a fun goal! I have been doing yoga almost every day since January (even just 20-30 min) and it feels amazing.

  19. That is such a good deal for yoga! I would love to do that challenge :-)

  20. 20 Brittany says:

I love the idea of doing a yoga challenge. I’ve been really getting into practicing at home, but I’d love to do a 30-40 day challenge. It will be interesting to see how much you progress. Are there any poses you really want to improve upon?

  21. that is a really great yoga deal! that is what turns me off yoga studios – can’t afford yoga and rent at the same time :)

  22. 22 Heather says:

Brittany: Well, overall I have lost a lot of flexibility so I am looking to open my hips and legs a ton. Also, I would love to improve on inversions and arm balancing poses. Ah so excited!

  23. 23 Jen says:

That’s an awesome challenge! I’m a big fan of the hot yoga. I’ve been practicing it for a couple of years. I gotta say…be careful with this challenge – esp. if the class is big. I don’t know if you’re like this but I tend to push myself too much. Plus, I’m really competitive. Those two characteristics lead to injuries at the yoga studio. If the class is too big, you might not get the instruction that you need and you might not do the positions correctly. Lately, I’ve had a new motto – Hang your ego outside the studio. That helps me get in the right frame of mind for class. Have fun and enjoy the sweat!

  24. 24 Heather says:

Thanks Jen! The class last night was big and I got kicked in the head twice. :D But honestly, I’ve been practicing for 7 or 8 years now and I am not really into pushing myself. :)

  25. 25 Emily says:

I’m really excited to follow you on your yoga challenge! I haven’t done hot yoga before either and am excited to try. Maybe that will be my challenge. :)

  26. 26 Elina says:

I really want to do something like that one day. I thought about it last year and then signed up for a half marathon…. and now I just started training for my next one. I HAVE TO try it this summer. Good luck. You’re going to be/do awesome. :)

  27. 27 Quix says:

That sounds awesome! I’m still in the mindset that yoga = keeping me limber for running and not really worth it in and of itself, but I probably just haven’t taken challenging enough classes. Someday…

  28. 28 Chelsea says:

I love the yoga challenge! Awesome.

I can’t believe that you hate olives. I respect your dislike but I love those things :)

  29. 29 Lara says:

That sounds great. I am just finishing up a month of $50 unlimited classes. Unfortunately the yoga aggravated a foot issue I have so I could not go everyday as I had hoped, more like 2-3x/week but still $50 for that was a great deal.

  30. 30 Abby says:

“The Mind quits before the body” THAT IS SO TRUE! How pithy! I love it!

  31. 31 Megan says:

Yay– I’m excited that you’re going to GSY. I hope you like it! Maybe I’ll see you there sometime. I wish I had gone there more when I did my introductory $50 package. Maybe I should change my name and do it again? I think I’m going to try to do a 21 day challenge at a studio in Hoboken starting Thurs.

  32. I wish our local studio would have such a deal. But I love the idea of that challenge. You will lean out and enjoy it so much.

  33. 33 Jenny says:

Good luck with your Yoga Challenge! I know you can do it, and it’s such a great goal, have fun!

  34. How awesome! I just looked into yoga classes this morning and found something similar–a local studio is doing an introductory offer of 30 classes (one per day) for $40. I’m really thinking about it and feel inspired after reading that you are doing it, too!

  35. 35 Stinky Cheese says:

Yay Heather! I’m so excited you’re doing this…it’s like we are doing it together even though we’re in different places!

  36. 36 Heather says:

Dear Stinky, It’s oodles of fun! I am trying not to anticipate the sadness when it’s over. Good thing is that each month the studio has a different class package deal!
