She Says: A Week of Eats – Here We Go!
Sometimes blogging is dramatic. I am going to cut to the chase. Before Mark and I start our week of eating I think it’s important to clear up a few things.
This is me looking a lot like I did 12 years ago at my senior prom.
- I am showing one full week of eating because last week I showed 1 day and caused a minor blogging controversy that completely surprised me. I think one week will give a better idea of what is typical for me. I could say it’s no one’s business, but that would be naive. I am part of a food and healthy living community. I might not fit the mold exactly, but I’m here and I like it.
- I am 5′2″ and I will be 30 in June.
- I run or use the elliptical 3 or 4 times a week for 45 – 60 mins. I do Hot Power Yoga 2 or 3 times a week. This is a recent change. In February I did 30 straight days of yoga and I realized I wanted to do more of that and less running.
- I do not believe that skinny is a synonym for healthy or happy. I’ve been much, much “skinnier” than I am today, but I assure you that I am 100% healthier and happier now. This is not to say I think “skinny people” are unhealthy. My point is that everyone is different and what is healthy for one person, is too skinny for me. I know this to be a true fact of my life. If you are very new here or have no idea what I am referencing, check out this post.
- I have a food philosophy. I don’t count calories, but I am not eating Twinkies and ice cream all day either. My philosophy and goal is to eat as much nutritious real food as possible because I want to be a healthy person, but I will not let food control me. Life is for living.
- I am a vegetarian because I am grossed out by factory farming. I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables. I also eat a lot of whole grains. I sometimes eat things like a bagel made from white flour. My weaknesses are bread and homemade baked goods. Oh and ice cream, which I rarely have in my house.
- I am not trying (very hard) to lose weight. Before Christmas I broke my foot and started taking a new medicine. I gained about 10 pounds and could not wear my clothes. After Christmas I stopped taking the medicine and started running again. I can now wear most of my clothes, but I could still lose about 5 pounds to return to my “normal weight.” I have a goal: to wear this dress at the end of May to a friend’s wedding (which I can currently zipper, but not take a breath in).
- I do not believe that maintaining a healthy weight should be a battle or extremely hard work. I am willing to accept that the way I am right this second is where my body should be. But like I said, I want to lose a few pounds and so I am in this sort of weird in between place right now.
- I welcome all comments, even the “nasty ones.” I’ve never deleted a comment. It takes all kinds my friends.
Alright. Here we go (Ahhh – I’m a little nervous)! Because this weekend was filled with cake, cookies and other treats today might be a little cleaner than the rest of the week to balance all the treats of the weekend.
Every weekday morning I wake up at around 6:30 and have a cup of coffee while checking emails and blogs and watching the news. It’s quiet and peaceful.
Sometimes I put agave in my coffee, sometimes just skim milk. Today was just skim milk with cinnamon in the grinds. I never finish my coffee.
Unless I am really hungry when I wake up I will pack my breakfast and eat it at around 7:45 – 8:15 at school before the kids get in. This morning I was not very hungry at all (I should mention Mark and I had pancakes last night at 10:00 – living with a boy can cause things like that), so I had a simple breakfast:
- Greek Yogurt + flax (first time w/ the Yoplait brand – it’s 10 for $10 at Stop & Shop)
- Banana with Peanut Butter down the center.
At the end of the week, a real live registered dietitian will weigh in on the week. I am really excited about this part! I am not a professional and I am not perfect and am looking forward to hearing her recommendations!
What would you want to ask a registered dietitian about your diet?

Love youe food philosophy -I feel the same way!
Your food philosophy makes me happy. And I might ask my dietitian how bad some of my bad habit foods really are for me. hehe.
THIS post perfectly sums up why I love your blog so much! We are pretty much one in the same when it comes to food and health philosophies. All the above bullet points resonate so much with me. Your realism is refreshing.
The other thing that critical (and taller) people forget — that I can say as a fellow short person — is that 5-10 pounds makes a LOT more of a difference when you’re 5′2″. I wish it wasn’t that way but it IS!!!
I love your food philosophy
*I agree*
“A real live registered dietitian” <– woohoo
(Me in 2 years!)
First off, kudos on the decision to post this. I’m a fairly new reader to your blog and I’ve found it greatly inspirational – your food philosophies are very similar to what I’m working to make mine into, plus to me your diet seems balanced – structured enough to be healthy but relaxed enough not to be a source of stress. Looking forward to seeing how this week goes
Secondly, I’d love to ask a dietitian what little things I could add in, take out, or substitute to my current meals that would make them healthier without large calorie increases.
I missed the controversy so I’m not sure what happened, but I think your philosophy is very healthy and I’m glad you don’t fit the “mold” of a healthy living blogger. To be honest, most aren’t very healthy. Have a great week!
I think the way you view food and health is great. I feel the same way- life is about so much more than weight, food, and exercise. I’m excited for the week ahead!
I think your outlook on life and health is great. I am looking forward to this week as I want to see what sort of packed lunches etc that you take for my own lunch ideas.
I really appreciate that food philosophy. I gained about 10 pounds last year but soon realized that skinny does not equal happy. When I was at my lowest weight I was practically scared to even go out to eat with friends!
It will be interesting to see the difference between your eats and Mark’s eats. I know me and my husband’s would look VERY different, aside from dinner.
You have such a well defined food philosophy, and eat so well as shown by last week’s post, I couldn’t imagine this being a scary experience or anyone having the right to flame you.
And I would ask a dietician about my added sugar/stevia consumption. I may eat a lot of it but it’s in coordinance with the good foods so I feel allowed to more than the “suggested amount”
You have what I think is the healthiest outlook of all and I hope that never changes. 5 pounds is not worth the craziness that conscious dieting can lead to. For the record, I think you look fabulous.
I love your philosophy of food, nutrition and exercise. It certainly is refreshing! Do you like the yoplait greek yogurt? I also bought it but I don’t like it as much!
Hey dude. I never finish my coffee either. It gets too cold by about 1/4 left. I would actually love to have a RD evaluate my eating, but I would be afraid of the results. Have a great day!
You have a great philosophy on food & life!
I’d love to know what an RD would have to say about my diet. Probably tell me to eat less sugar!!
Love that you’re having an RD weigh-in at the end of the week!! Can’t wait to hear what she says.
No offense, but I won’t be reading this week. I can’t take another blogger who eats too little to fuel their active lifestyle. Not sure if you saw, but someone said something to Meghann about it too and of course the defenders came out. It’s so sad. I’ll be back next week though.
I think I’d be too embarrassed to have an RD look at what I’m eating right now. This weekend was filled with wine, beer and veggie burgers from BK lol. Where did you get your Yoplait Greek yogurt? I haven’t been able to find it by me. Thanks
I love how you are bringing in a RD to weigh in at the end of the week! I can’t wait to see what she says.
Byt the way you alre looking HOT in the top photo!
Love your attitude, love this post.
Hmmm. I’d actually like to ask an RD if I’m eating enough calories. Sometimes, I think I should bump up my intake a little.
Wow- good on you for not being gun-shy after last week’s “controversy”! I’m really interested to see what the RD says. I think that will be great information for all of us
(makes me want a consultation…maybe I should find an RD in my area)
I love your attitude and philosophy. I’d love to have an rd analyze my eats and tell me if I’m healthy enough and if I eat too much sugar.
Good for you for doing it and not being shy of any comments.
I would ask a RD about my non meat protein sources. I like meat but it doesn’t like my IBS so I’d like to learn more about how to balance out my meals from being just veggies since some grains don’t agree with me either.
I think this is the way people should view themselves.
Eating healthily but without trying to litteraly squeeze into something you are not because of what some people preceive as “perfect body”.
Love your blog, I really do!
I’d ask the RD if I get enough protein/minerals etc. I know I get enough fiber, eating TONS of vege and fruit and probably enough vitamin c but I’d be curious about the rest.
xxx
I love using my Bora Bora tiki mug for coffee and everything else!
I’ve got to ask…is that your left hand holding up your phone to take a picture? It looks like you have a ring on your ring finger and I’m nosy
You look gorgeous in this pic!!! I’m with Morgan – are you wearing a special ring there?
LOL! No, that’s a ring my sister (my sugar momma) gave me for my law school graduation. I usually wear it on the right hand, but I must have been switching it on and off out of boredom.
People who criticize you are incredibly jealous because your body looks absolutely amazing!
I love your food philosophy and find your lifestyle inspiring! I am dying to try a 30-day yoga challenge! Now it’s just going to be hard to keep up with all these great posts!

Just catching up on your posts from the initial controversial one…how COOL that you are doing this! We’re all such voyeurs, but having the opinion of an RD at the end of the weeks makes this so much cooler than other food journaling.
You better not get crap from anyone for what you eat, or there is no hope for any of the rest of us. How could anyone be mean to you, sweet, intelligent Heather?!
Great post! I love your thoughts on food and calories and totally agree. Glad to have found your blog. Oh and don’t you just love those quiet mornings with a cup of Java? I can’t live without them!
