She Says: Hunger, Please Subside.

by Heather Wednesday, March 10, 2010

For the past five days I have been the hungriest person and pretty much unable to get enough to eat! And I know it’s real hunger and not boredom or nervousness because I’ve really been trying to pay attention to that. I know we’ve all been there for a day or two, but five days! Hmph.

This hunger has meant a lot of snacks. Today I had the Organic Mmmaple Pecan Granola Bar that Nature’s Path sent me. This was basically a cookie in the shape of granola bar and it was soooooo yummy. I almost cried when it was gone.

I also quenched some serious thirst with this Agave Mate. Such a tasty mate!

After school I went to the gym for a bit. I planned to run, but after 1 mile I was just not feeling it. Instead I hopped on the treadmill for 30 minutes before doing something very, very naughty …

I broke my self-imposed market ban today. You see, I had to go to Trader Joe’s for a friend and I justified picking up a few things for myself for two reasons: (1) I will not be here to go food shopping this weekend (super psyched to drive to Mass. in a runaway Prius); and (2) I don’t remember right now, but there was a good second reason.

This is what I picked up for me:

I often get agave there, but this is my first time with the maple syrup. Has anyone ever bought the maple syrup & agave mix from Trader Joe’s?

The reason I banned myself from the market was because I was “running in” to grab “one or two necessities” and coming out of Whole Foods down $20 – $30 a couple times a week. No bueno for the wallet. I learned my lesson and will try my best to restrict my entry into food stores to once a week.

For dinner I warmed up some frozen Vegetable Pesto Soup. I love the parsnips in there!

About half way through I decided this was not going to cut it, so I toasted up an Ezekiel English Muffin & topped it with Earth Balance.

And after that I was still hungry so I made some dessert oatmeal with a little Trader Joe’s Roasted Flaxseed Almond Butter.

Oh please insatiable hunger, go away!

Teacher Question: I am planning a field trip and would like to know: what’s the best and/or worst field trip you ever went on?

A good field trip is made by fun chaperones. I remember going to the zoo. The key was to get stuck with a fun parent.
I can’t wait to try that nature’s path bar now!
And if you’re really hungry for the food, I say go for it.
The Trader Joe’s maple/agave blend isn’t really worth it. It tastes generically sweet

  2. 2 Run Sarah says:

I heart dessert oatmeal, so good! Yum :) My favourite field trips: PNE (local amusement park for Physics class) and Chinatown. Worst field trips? Honestly can’t really think of any – I loved them in elem and high school.

  3. I tend to go to the grocery store way more than i need to and spend wayyy too much $$. I need to start meal planning more often!

The best field trips don’t take all day and night. I always hated being on the bus for half the day and not getting back to school until after dark.

  4. I had to do the same thing with myself this week with the grocery store, but today I felt like I might need to sneak in a trip! I’ve tried Trader Joe’s syrup and I can’t complain. It served all of my pancake needs just fine.

  5. I’ve bought the TJs maple syrup you have picture there, but never the mix. I really like the syrup though!

  6. I used to love going to the aquarium! Best field trip ever.

  7. I’ve been a HUNGRY HIPPO lately too!! Not sure what’s going on but it’s driving me mad.

I wanted to try the flaxseed AB from TJ’s but I think it’s the same as Naturally More, of which I still have a Costco-sized jar open. For some reason the addition of flaxseeds makes the ab that much more addicting.

I’ve never tried the maple+agave, although I’ve wanted to since the agave is a bit too runny for some recipes.

Best field trip was in 7th grade to Camp Sloane… I did the zip-line, and it was awesome :) hope you get satisfied soon!

  9. 9 Christin L. says:

Me, my roommate, and my boyfriend have all been pretty much insatiable over the last 3-4 days too! Maybe it’s a planetary shift or something! :D

  10. OOh, are those granola bars available in stores now?? They look delish, esp this one!

I get in those hunger moods too- it’s crazy sometimes how much of a bottomless pit I feel like at certain times, but then other times I just nibble and get full quickly. Our thunger is a weird thing sometimes I think!

  11. I’m jealous you were able to get the almond butter w/flaxseeds in it. My TJs was out of it the other day, and they won’t have any for almost a week! I went with the plain roasted this time.
My bottomless pit days tend to be hormonal, but as I learn more about that, I’ve learned to expect it and keep munchies around that aren’t going to make me feel guilty. Which is something else I need to work on!

  12. 12 Emily says:

Hey Heather! I definitely need to get my hands on those Mmmaple granola bars. They sound delicious!

I think my favorite field trip was to Boston – it was a really special one, so its probably a bit more than you’re bargaining for. I think the worst one was to the dentist! No lie, I remember people dressed up as toothbrushes and singing… “Up like the grass, down like the rain, and back and forth like a choo choo train.” Not fun.

  13. Best field trip was to a monastary to make pretzels as a DODS student.

Worst was probably the Franklin Institute because we went every year.

  14. 14 Danielle says:

I’ve bought both the TJ’s Agave blend and the regular maple and both were amazing! I’ve also been meaning to try TJ’s with flax, but I’m seriously considering just adding some flax to the one i already have to make it easy! : )

My favorite field trip was to the Museum of Discovery and Science. Science museums made for kids are so educational and always keep things so interactive! I also loved theme parks (we went to the Kennedy Space Center and Epcot when I lived in FL), but I think those are more for the older kids!

  15. 15 Amanda says:

Once in elementary school we went to the local radio station – I seriously still remember it because it was so cool to meet the voices behind the radio!!

  16. 16 Heather says:

Danielle: I think if you roast some flaxseeds it might work!

    Christin: Good to know!

Joelle: I think so b/c they are online now.

  17. 17 sophia says:

I actually welcome hunger…hunger cues is a great sign of health! And that just means you are really healthy, and your body is working the way it is supposed to…so eat up! :-)

  18. 18 Heather's Bestie says:

The best field trips to go on are where the students have background knowledge. It’s great when, wherever you are, the students say “hey, we learned that!” or some such thing. Even better when they can answer questions from the docent!

  19. 19 sassy molassy says:

I’m with you. I have been sooo hungry/hangry the past few days that it just gets annoying. It’s like “stomach, stop already. be full!”

  20. 20 Becky says:

As a teacher, my favorite place to take the kids is the zoo or any outdoor nature trail/park location. They can eat and be messy, they ca get loud and excited without bothering anyone, and there’s plenty of space for everyone. The WORST place I ever took my class was Mystic Aquarium. It was too dark, too crowded, and too loud. I ended up totally stressed because I couldn’t see my kids and they ended up totally overwhelmed. Nobody really enjoyed it. Hope you find a fun field trip location!

  21. I have had the maple and agave!!! YUMMMMMM!

  22. I am so with you in the market ban. I gave up shopping for clothes and excesive food shopping for lunch. I’m a teacher too and my least fav trip is the farm (yuck). My fav trip is the transit museum in Brooklyn.

  23. 23 Arielle says:

This is really sad now that I think about it but I had the coolest sixth grade teacher and somehow she turned a field trip to Outback into an educational experience. Not that it was actually educational, except I learned how to make a blooming onion – you never know when you’re going to have to do that! But we got to cook food and serve each other and, while I lived close to DC and we went to lots of various museums/monuments/etc. when I was in school, Outback is the one I really remember.

  24. 24 cara says:

I do the same thing (going to whole foods or wherever a few times a week and leaving with more than I went in for). I need to get a hold of myself on that one too. Now if only I was good at sticking to my own rules. haha.

  25. 25 kirsten says:

The maple syrup and agave mix is REALLY good. I’ve used it on waffles and in coffee (kind of weird I know haha) and it tastes great.

  26. 26 Lara says:

Looks like you get very little protein. I find that it really helps with hunger. A mainly carb diet just does not keep my hunger at bay.

  27. 28 Lara says:

I know you are a vegetarian but even still, doesn’t seem like you get much of non-meat proteins. Nut butters are fat, not really a protein. You have to eat a large portion (which = lots of calories) to get appreciable protein. I am not talking about this from a health standpoint but rather from a satiety standpoint.

  28. 30 Julie says:

the best field trip ever was to Canobie Lake in NH!! You can learn about velocity and what have you on the roller coasters :) The zoo was always a good time too.

  29. 31 Carolyn says:

The only field trip I actually remember is one when I lived in Little Rock. We went farther north to Blanchard Canverns. I probably remember this one because I think it’s the the first one my mom had been a chaperone on for a while (my parents had just gotten divorced, she was back in school, and was working, too).

  30. 32 La says:

I just put myself on grocery-store suspension too. Seriously, I stopped shopping for clothes and shoes but replaced it with groceries! Bad bad bad.

  31. 33 Kris says:

I agree with Lara. You are probably hungry because it seems like you eat a lot of sugary snacks and not much with substance.

  32. 34 Sarah says:

My favorite field trip was to a courthouse. We toured a jail cell and a courtroom, then talked to one of the judges…something probably for older elementary students, but I thought it was really neat!

  33. 35 Becky says:

The worst field trip? we went to the local sewage treatment plant once. we got sprayed with poo-water when the wind blew, and we went into the most foul smelling room where the water is treated. we also got to witness it churning is some massive outdoor vat. Kids were vomiting as we were walking. Yeah, that was the worst.

  34. 36 Joanne says:

I just took my earth science students to a volcano field in Northern Arizona yesterday (about 2 hours north of where we are in AZ). It was my first field trip experience (as a teacher)! The students absolutely loved it and I thought it was pretty cool too. They were so stoked to get outside the classroom & didn’t even care that we had to leave at 7:00am (and hour before school starts). I have been on some pretty cool field trips during college, but the one I loved most in elementary school was the zoo. Where are you planning to go?

  35. I think I’ve seen the agave + maple blend on Mama Pea’s blog. I don’t know why I remember that, I think it’s because I’ve been wondering about it too!

  36. 38 Lisa says:

the blend is great!! I got it a few weeks ago.
Some good NJ field trips… Morristown Planetarium, Papermill playhouse, Liberty Science Center…

  37. 39 Marianne says:

Mmmm, dessert oatmeal. That sounds good right about now.

I’ve been pretty good since moving back home with not buying a crap ton of things at the grocery store. A) because I’m literally broke, and B) because we have no where to store all the things I want to buy. My tastes differ greatly from my family, so I have to keep in mind storage space in our kitchen.
