She Says: Plan of Attack for Weakness Foods

by Heather Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Looking at my meals this week it appears that I follow a pattern: breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner, snack. This isn’t entirely accurate because sometimes I have a snack before lunch. It completely depends on how hungry I am and what time I plan to eat lunch.

Today I got hungry earlier (maybe because breakfast was about 45 minutes earlier than usual), so I had an Organic Nature’s Path Berry Strawberry Granola Bar. It was warm and melty in my car so it tasted like a Strawberry Toaster Strudel.

I also made lunch before I left for school today, but picked it up at home at the usual time. The reason for this change? I am the kind of person who, while I like to have snacks like Tortilla Chips, is aware of my limitations and weaknesses.

If I lived alone I would simply not buy these things, but I don’t want to deprive Mark or myself.  In the past, Mark routinely bought a bag against my protests and then I’d eat the whole bag myself. Eventually I got kind of embarrassed when Mark always asked, ‘Hey Heath, where’s that bag of chips we bought two days ago?” Once he bought a bag of chips and declared them “Nacho Making Chips Only,” I knew I had a Tortilla Chip Problem. Now I have more of a structured approach.

If I went home at lunch time and made this same lunch I would have easily consumed double the amount of chips because I always go back for a “few more” chips.  In the morning, however, eating chips just doesn’t do it for me. By planning it out like this, I can have my chips (I think there are about 10), but not go overboard by consuming half a bag. A win-win.

With the chips is leftover Quinia, Cauliflower & Chickpeas with an orange and iPhone for size comparison.

What’s your plan of attack for your food weakness?

  1. I preportion out snacks I can’t control or don’t buy them at all. My weaknesses aren’t Hunni’s weaknesses so I don’t have to feel like I’m depriving him.

  2. I have the same problem with ice cream! I try to stop after one scoop but it’s not always possible….

I literally did the SAME thing today with my tortilla chips for my taco salad! Packed them last night so there were NO temptations! And I packed them right as I was putting some tortilla chips on my taco salad last night (I always eat leftovers for lunch the next day) so the only chips I wanted to eat were the ones I put on my dish last night! I love outsmarting myself!

have you been putting your iphone in all your food pics for perspective/scale? if so – that’s genius!

ps wanted to comment on your morning post too… i LOVE march madness, and have to convince my bf to participate in a bracket too. funny how that works lol. good luck!

  5. In my recovery from disordered eating, I worked my way through those types of foods and don’t really have trigger foods anymore. As part of my process, I legalized every single food that had that power over me as well as addressed with awareness the reason I reacted that way with them. Sometimes, I slip back into old patterns with chips or sweet foods but most of the time, I catch myself before I get too full and rarely do it when I was not hungry in the first place.

This is why I don’t have a snack drawer at work: If it’s there, I will eat it, no matter how hungry I am (for the most part, but definitely at work due to boredom). And I try not to buy things that are too tempting. I give in way too easily.

Tortilla chips are definitely a weakness for me as well. I have been known to consume whole bags in a mere two days too. I can’t allow myself to start eating them if I’m really hungry or else there’s no stopping me. I do buy them but I have to portion them out into individual servings and make sure I eat them with something substantial. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I have the exact same problem with tortilla chips! I usually try to manage the issue by keeping the bag out of sight and in the back of the cabinet away from other “snacks”. When I want some I take out a single serving and then hide the bag again. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. I really like your tactic. I’m definitely going to try it out, thanks for sharing!

    im luving this !! esp mark’s posts!!!!!!!!!lol

    I love these posts :-)

And I definitely understand your chip addiction. Mine is with brownies. It is a bad idea to have them in my house. haha.

  11. My food limitation is snacking before dinner. For some reason I always think I’m hungry when more than likely I’m just thirsty because my water consumption drops off considerably when I get off work. I actually talked about this in my post last night, but I’ve decided that it is just a good idea NOT to have cookies and such in the house because I can’t eat just one. My girls will ask for them and I feel guilty about giving them a cookie before dinner or I feel guilty about NOT giving them a cookie before dinner. If they aren’t in the house then I don’t have to feel guilty about that or feel guilty that I ate 5 Joe Joe’s before sitting down to dinner.

Gah I just don’t buy my weakness foods- I can’t control myself when it comes to a box of cereal!!

  13. 13 Evan Thomas says:

I used to measure out chips. Now I don’t, but I could definitely plow through a bag so I usually serve myself a good helping and put the rest away.

  14. wow, i thought i was the only one who could eat a whole bag of tortilla chips on my own! seriously. the wegmans chip bag says 16 servings. bull. i ate it in 4 days. 4 servings.

i live at home, and everyone loves chips (but can control themselves better…), so right now there are 3 bags of chips in the pantry. i’ve been pretty bad with eating them, but maybe i’ll start measuring them out and putting the bag away now. i also can’t control myself around cereal. especially kashi.

great job on packing it in the morning – i love that tactic!

for some things like trail mix i pre-portion them out in baggies. for other things i have tiny ramekins to use for one serving then putting everything away and closing the kitchen/brushing my teeth!

Hey dude. I love the O Organics brand of tortilla chips that I buy here.

  17. 17 BridgetP says:

Tortilla chips are my weakness too. Sometimes I’m glad going home for lunch isn’t an option because I’m sure I would down way more than I intended of something like chips while I was prepping lunch!
