Meet Heather

Posted by Heather on Jul 25 2008 | Uncategorized

Hello. As you can see from my photo montage, my hobbies include bridesmaiding, Segwaying, stretching and dressing up in 80’s clothes.  You should also know that I love snacks and get hangry if not fed.  I run for fun, love yoga and hate pilates.

I know that food is fuel, but cannot ignore that food is a cultural experience that brings people together in a way that nothing else does.  Everyone, regardless of religion, race, sex or political ideology, must eat!  Growing up, all occasions - birthdays, Christmas Eve, Sunday dinner at grandma’s house, centered around food.  This gave me memories and traditions that I am happy to have.  I still enjoy these celebrations, and am trying to be more aware of making healthy choices as I learn about the connection between what I put in my body and how I feel.

Enjoy the blog!

P.S. Meet (More of) Heather here.

  1. Hey Heather,

Blog looks great - I’m excited to read :) Congrats on your new goal to go meatless for 30 days. Here are some of my favorite vegetarian food and meals:

-Quorn “Chik’n” cutlets (at Whole Foods but also in some regular grocery stores)
-Greek salad (feta, olives, tomato - what’s not to love?!)
-Beans (a great source of protein to take place of the meat)
-Omelettes (assuming you are still eating eggs, this is another great way to fill up on protein without meat)
    -Morningstar meatless patties and burgers

Those are just a few…I’m sure some of the vegan or vegetarian blogs on my blogroll would also have some great ideas for you! Best of luck - and thanks for reading :)

    Jenn,

Thanks for the ideas. I love Morningstar farms products, but I’ve never had Quorn products, so I’ll have to check those out. Yes, we’re still eating eggs and dairy for now.

Thanks for stopping by and come back soon!

  3. Heather,
Thanks for visiting our blog! Glad you liked it! As with you and Mark, Erin and I are new to the food blog world. We’re having a blast and always appreciate feedback!
You guys are hilarious - love the posts already! I’ll definitely be checking in every day and adding you to our blogroll :)
I don’t have any real advice for going veg. I had very strong convictions as to WHY I decided to do it, that when I stopped it was easy and natural. If you like to cook, just experiment with lots of new foods - especially the ones with lots of fruit and vegetables. That, and learning to love new foods, has been the best part of going veg. Don’t rely to heavily on pre-packaged meat substitutes - there’s so much better “real” food out there!

  5. Hello, Heather! I received your post on my blog about making tofu. My ultimate secret for cooking tofu in a pan? You really need to squeeze out as much excess water as possible. Use paper towels, paper bags, whatever, and stack books on them. It makes a huge difference!

(Wish I had more tips, but I must admit that the boyfriend makes tofu much better than I do!)

Hi. Saw your call for tips on Andrea/Erin’s site and thought I’d throw the only thing I have out there. I think the best way to go vegetarian is with accountability, like you’re doing with this blog. If you know that someone will find out about you sneaking meat into your diet you’re just less likely to do it….

I also have a simple recipe for you that I really like:
I love to put hummus on a tortilla and add slices of yellow bell pepper, tomatoes, avocado and alfalfa sprouts. It’s a really easy, refreshing lunch. You can add side of fruit if your still hungry (I like watermelon with it)

Unfortunately I think that’s all I’ve got tip wise….although I agree that there are some great veggie alternatives out there (like the morning star veggie patties). Best of luck to you on your vegetarian adventure. I’ll check back soon to see how you’re doing in the middle. :)
    Best wishes!

    Stephanie,

Thanks so much for stopping by the blog and offering ideas. Mark and I appreciate it.

It’s funny that you mentioned accountability because my sister threatened to blackmail me by commenting that I am a fraud who eats meat!

  9. Hi Heather, thanks for stopping by my blog! I look forward to reading about your meatless month. I’ve been eating less and less meat lately, too, so it’s neat to see how someone else is going from meat-eater to vegetarian!

  16. Hi Lee, thanks for checking out the blog!

If you have wordpress, which I think you do, go to settings, then discussion and there are different privacy and approval features to choose from. I think they vary from blog to blog.
