He Says: Too Little Information
I am genuinely interested to know what you think of this:
TMI Weekly – Stylish Workout Wear
Coming from the budding Internet TV startup perspective, I value your honest opinion and perception on the matters of “life, tech, style, fitness” and how these particular ladies portray it.
Note I’m not a fan of this show, nor a hater. I’ve met only one of these people personally and since that interaction with her was so radically different than what she portrays “on screen”, I’m curious to know what the appeal of these attitudes and the handling of the topics for another woman is. Surely, once a man gets over the minute delusion that one of these woman will possibly engage in sexual activity with him, endgame arrives for TMI.
As someone who is interested in producing a show on these topics:
- Would you watch this show on a regular basis?
- Would you subscribe in your RSS Reader, download it to your iPod, etc?
- What would you change in order for it appeal to you more?
Be nice or be brutal, but please – be honest! Take the poll and leave me a comment. Thank you.

Never heard of it till you brought it up. And after watching the episode, not a big fan of the show. I’m not against it, but I just am not into that kind of thing. I guess I do see where they are coming from, and trying to look “cute” at the gym, as I guess they expect others to be checking them out there too? Oh well.
January 17th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
never heard of it either…it sure cracked me up. wait a sec, the off-label brand’s pants are $75!?!?! umm, yeah I don’t pay nearly that much for gym clothes. I sure got a great laugh in this morning. love it! thanks =)

i’m pretty neutral toward this–i wouldn’t actively search for it and watch on a consistent basis but i didn’t hate it either.
I think it sort of dragged on and I was bored and probably would have turned it off if I wasn’t reviewing it.
Pros: I liked how it was casual and they joked around with each other, I liked the pictures they showed–I love seeing pictures of “real life” because it makes it more relatable.
Cons: I got bored. I didn’t feel like they were really saying anything worthwhile and didn’t really get their point across. I’m still not sure what the ‘message’ was. Also, maybe if they added music or something it would make it more interesting?
January 17th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
Hmm I can’t say I would watch it all the time, but maybe that’s because I’m already a dedicated person who works out. this would potentially be helpful for the newbie who needs some inspiration or who could get interested in these people and feel connected to them.
Agreed that they were a little low on good messaging…$75 is not cheap for a person who is starting out.
I work for an internet company, we do websites and software and I’m a consultant, so let me know if there are any questions I can help with…

Hmmm..I’ve never heard of it before watching this episode. I would not subscribe to it. I don’t think there is anything particularly interesting or fun about this, just some mindless chatter played up for a camera. I’m sure the girls are nice people, but I didn’t find this particularly entertaining or informative. I guess I’m with you–not a fan, not a hater.
January 17th, 2009 at 6:37 pm
I got bored. Stupid topic. Nothing interesting to keep my attention to the screen (i.e. super blah background). The only part I liked was when they switched screens to the pictures, site to purchase clothes, short video at end… I WOULD NEVER PAY TO WATCH THIS! Did I mention WICKED stupid topic. I feel like they had nothing else to talk about so they had to make something up.
January 17th, 2009 at 7:43 pm
They are a little over the top for me…I wish they would act a little more natural.
January 18th, 2009 at 4:42 am
oh i totally want a team blair t-shirt!!
I actually really liked it! They didn’t seem over the top to me they were just girlie talking, and that two bra thing was really funny. I totally related to the geekette girl wearing baggy clothes to the gym, i love doing that- so comfortable!
anywayz have a fabulous day
January 18th, 2009 at 8:25 am
A little boring- they could have had the same message in about half the time! I wouldn’t subscribe to this or watch it- they weren’t very funny and the topic didn’t add anything to my life.
January 18th, 2009 at 9:58 am
ehhhh i’m not too big of a fan. i like to wear nice clothes to work out in, but that’s only because i teach classes at the gym and have to look presentable for my job. when i go to the other gym to work out, you’ll find me dripping sweat and dressed like a homeless person.
i don’t think i would subscribe to it, but i definitely don’t hate it. just don’t love it, or the message it’s sending out.. a lot of girls are self conscious at the gym anyway and i feel like it (most likely unintentionally) gives them something else to stress over.
sorry for just now responding to your comment on my blog, but with the elliptical i would start at level 4 and increase it one level every 2 minutes until you get to level 11 or 12 and start over.
have a great day!

I’d say it’s just “meh.” I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t like it enough to subscribe to it or watch it regularly.
I think it was unmemorable. I started leaning toward dislike from the very beginning when they knocked various motivating strategies for getting to the gym. Going to the gym is way more important than what you’re wearing in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong. I like cute workout clothes as much as the next active person. I just don’t think it should be a priority over what you’re doing at the gym.
January 18th, 2009 at 10:44 am
Well, I’ve watched it several times now. Here are my thoughts.
(1) I like the idea of showcasing new workout clothes. I look like a scrub at the gym and certainly am not going to pay $75 for gym pants, but I do like the idea. When they actually talked about the clothes, it was kind of informative.
(2) I think new gym clothes can be motivating for some people. What’s not motivating? Thin people telling me that the mirrors at a gym are for me to watch what jiggles on my own body. I don’t think that would be very motivating, especially for people new to a gym who are already a little nervous that people are going to be watching them while they work out. This whole segment sort of reinforces the fear that many people have that they are being watched and judged at the gym. Even if it’s tru, let’s not discuss it. You want someone who is trying to motivate you to go to the gym to make you feel better about yourself, not worse.
(3) More interesting things to talk about – Megan’s double sports bra wearing (i.e. more supportive bras) and marathon training.
(4) I would like to see the next show discussing new gym moves to see how they approach the topic.

Like.. maybe like… like…. my like, $75 pants, like are SOOOO cute because of this awesome little blue stripe.
I think it totally typifies women in such an airhead way.
I think the topic of workout gear is TOTALLY GREAT!
But as an avid runner and gym-goer for 12 years of my life- I want to desparately know about what underwear to wear that will not get completely soaking wet on my 6 mile runs.
I mean , am I the only one who wears underwear and has this problem? I am not a crazy-sweat- person – but when I run at 9 mph and run for longer than say 5 miles- I sweat and they have dry fit pants , dry fit shirts, dry fit sports bras- what the crap on the underwear?
Being confident about yourself goes hand in hand along with a healthy body, so working out in great, fun, comfortable gear is a way to boost your self-esteem which shoud correlate with boosting the intensity of your workout.
Many women that just start working out or are unsure of going to the gym or just unaware in general could benefit from seeing something like this, but not with ditzy 20 something’s that say like or totally or awesome after every other phrase ! They completely missed out on all the important ides they COULD send across on workout gear.
January 18th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
I think they make some good points about fashion at the gym, but I don’t think (on a personal level) that I have anything in common with these women – and maybe that’s a snap judgement, but I couldn’t connect with them, so I don’t think I’d watch it again.
They are also very bouncy and say “like” quite a bit.
I do think the editing of the video is great, however. But it gets a bit static while they’re talking about clothing.
January 18th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
They spend way too much time discussing gym clothing. The ladies should expand on other topics.
Also, they are difficult to relate to because they seem very judgmental. I think the show would be better if they made quick comment regarding their personal opinions on gym attire then move on to why it is beneficial to have the proper gear.
January 18th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
I’ve never heard of this show, but I don’t think I would be much of a regular watcher. The girls annoyed me, and I just kept wanting it to end…I found it almost painful. It will not influenced my workout clothing purchases in any way, as I already know what brands I like and what works for me.
Hope this is helpful.
January 18th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
This clip stereotypes women in an incredibly painful manner. Leaves me feeling vaguely offended. Seems like it was planned by someone who thinks that a woman’s primary goal in life is to look good/”cute”. A lot of women exercise for the health benefits, not so that their butt looks cute in 75.00 spandex pants. Consider going against the grain and producing something that assumes that women are intelligent and thoughtful, and more interested in supportive sneakers or moisture wicking apparel than impressing men while they exercise.
Hope I”m not sounding too harsh here. Consider viewing the film Killing Us Softly: 3 Advertising’s Image of Women (I think you can watch it on google video). Perhaps it will make you reconsider the way these women are portrayed.
January 18th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
I’m in total agreement with Eliza. These women annoyed me so much I couldn’t even finish the clip (I’m sorry! I tried really hard!). Even my husband said, “Who is that? Those are some really annoying girls.” The one girl in the pink tank top could not stop touching and fiddling with her top and that got annoying and distracting. She’s on camera clearly she should realize that’s going to get picked up!
When working out, I’m looking for clothes that are functional and not too expensive. Not something that’s going to make me look “cute”, add some color, or lift my glutes. Honestly, I don’t really give a flip what I look like because the whole point is that I’m working out not trying to look pretty or whatever for someone else.
$.02
January 18th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
I agree with a lot of the other commenters. I think they probably could have said the same things in about half the time. I would have liked maybe some more thrifty advice – like buying used lululemon (super expensive yoga clothes) on eBay, because $75 is not cheap IMO! Maybe some people wouldn’t do that, but I’d definitely consider it. Though the girls definitely have funky and fun personalities, I think they let the personalities get in the way of the show – it seemed like the clip was more about listening to themselves talk rather than giving useful advice. Sorry I don’t want to sound mean! I think there’s a lot of good potential. I just like things that get to the point more. Hope this helps!

As a guy, I think that this is exactly the kind of thing that encourages insecurity in a girl about her image (which is not a good thing!) “Make sure you don’t go to the gym looking like a slob” ……Of course no one wants to look like a slob anywhere, but with the over the top delivery it feels as if these girls are saying “if you don’t dress like us @ the gym, if you don’t wear [fill-in-the-blank-brand-of-gym-clothes] then you’re dressing like a slob”. The bit about mirrors @ the gym is a similar example. They are encouraging the type of mentality that will bring about extreme personal insecurities, which I don’t think is that healthy.
Other than that, I can see how a show about new and exciting gym clothes may be a great motivator for some girls. So maybe it’s just difficult to strike a balance between appreciating looking good while exercising and feeling insecure enough (motivated enough) to want to look good. I think it would be a great, really informative and interesting show if they just toned down the part where they point out that everyone is looking at you and judging you @ the gym and that you need to always look amazing.
January 18th, 2009 at 8:00 pm
I don’t like the part about “there is a reason there are mirrors in the gym!” Um, if I am a size 2 and worried about my thighs jiggling, I’ve got other problems going on!
January 18th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
I agree, its a little mindless chit chatter….need more spunk and captivating things to say!
January 18th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
I wouldn’t watch this on a regular basis or subscribe to it. It was kind of boring- it went on too long.
I work in a running store, so I know a good deal about tech clothes for running/working out. I wished they would talk about the features of the clothes, or the fabrics, or the purpose more instead of just the fashion aspect. There are better reasons to get new workout clothes than looking cute at the gym. They could have talked about wicking properties of technical fabrics or temperature regulation or support in sports bras- anything else!
January 18th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
No thanks! It reminds me of something that should be on saturday night live or something (nothing against those ladies!).

Agree with the other posters – this clip was way too long and really didn’t have much substance.
January 19th, 2009 at 11:11 pm
Like many of the other commenters said, I think the biggest drawback on this video is that it’s just too long. Right now I am typing this comment to you 2 minutes into it and am letting it go on in the background without actually watching it anymore. I think videos like this should be 2 minutes at the very most.
That said, I am definitely a fan of the roundtable discussion and the honesty of the girls. I don’t know if I would necessarily watch it on a regular basis unless there was a set agenda…you know, maybe they could insert a graphic at the beginning that shows what they are going to talk about, so that I could skip to the part I really wanted to watch.

I generally don’t subscribe to anything because I like to just go to the sites at my leisure. If they are good, I will remember to visit. I actually like TMI Weekly way more than than the nonsociety lifecasts.
If you guys start doing videos, I will watch!
