He Says: Ewww Spinach Juice

by Mark Thursday, March 12, 2009

We recently received a Lexen Healthy Juicer , which is a manual wheat grass and leafy greens juicer, from 877MyJuicer.com . Read all about it (and scroll down to learn how to win one of your own).

The guts of the Wheatgrass Juicer before assembly.

Although it looks like a lot of parts when laid out like this they fit together intuitively. The main parts to concern yourself with are the body (far left), the juicer tray (top left) and crank arm (top center). The other parts are less interesting, but no less important. They are the food pusher inner (which serves double duty as a lever for a pressure release), a wrench, and a clap for holding the whole assembly onto a table or other flat service as the crank arm is manipulate.

I had fun putting it together and while most devices with this level of intricacy feature parts of suspect quality, I found these to be well made on all fronts. A few extra washers, caps, and bushings (parts that will see wear and tear over time) are also included which is a nice addition. A device targeted for a single purpose like this often features a weak point either in manufacturing or design which inhibit its overall effectiveness over time. I found this wasn’t the case here. With proper care and cleaning (which isn’t hard) you can be wheat juicin’ well into 20XX.

Heather and I chose to feed this guy 4 large handfuls of spinach, 1 small chopped apple, and 1 (peeled!) orange. Knowing that spinach is naturally bitter I thought this would a good combination and add some additional depth to the flavor.

Here, I push some spinach and churn away.

I was surprised by 2 things, very quickly. 1. Excess pulp is expunged from the back of the device like sausage out of grinder. After a little spilled (again – to my surprise!) we put a cup under the spout. The cup was soon filled which is where surprise number 2 comes in: there was A LOT of excess pulp. Not knowing what to do with this and suspecting throwing it out is just a waste, we kept it for another day. Since we’ve been fixated with eating raw, I’m sure there’s something we can do with our Wheatgrass Juicer Side Effect Spinach Pudding.

Also of note is the layer of thick pulpy juice that sits atop a metal screen filter which in turn covers the juice reservoir. I was tempted to drink this but couldn’t bring myself to do it, with its resemblance to… well, you can substitute something gross in there.

The actual juice was thin and crisp, surprisingly sweet and very, very fresh tasting. The orange and apple juices make it satisfyingly thirst quenching and the grassy spinach flavor is a fresh eye opener.
